THE BAPTISM OF OUR LORD The Voice over the Waters January 12 & 13, 2019 5:00pm & 8:00am AS WE GATHER Voices are in our heads nearly every moment. Even when we don t realize it, we are listening to the sounds of life that surround us. What do those voices say? What choruses do they sing? What refrains do they repeat? The voice we gather to hear this day stands in stark contrast to the multitude of others in our world. The voice of the LORD is over the waters, we read in Psalm 29:3. As He did for ancient Israel and as He did for His only-begotten Son our Father does for us today: He speaks over us words of life! Connected to Christ by water and Spirit redeemed and called by His name the Father makes us His own. Are we listening? Can we hear Him? He is speaking. Let s open our ears to hear. WELCOME HANDSHAKES & HUGS OPENING HYMN #723 Refrain: Praise the Lord, all nations! Extol him, all peoples! For great is his steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord! (Psalm 117, ESV) PREPARATION The Lord Is My Light The Lord is my light and my salvation, The Lord is the stronghold of my life. Since the Lord is my life, my strength, and my all, Whom then shall I fear? There is one thing I ask of the Lord; To dwell in His house forever, To gaze on the beauty of the Lord All the days of my life. Refrain Do not hide Your face, O Lord; Ev ry day I will seek Your face. Though my father and mother may forsake me, The Lord will receive me. Refrain 1 continued Teach me, Lord, and keep me on Your paths; Guide me, Lord, along a level way. I will gaze on the goodness of the Lord In the land of all the living. Refrain INVOCATION & OPENING SENTENCES Page 184 In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen. Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. Our help is in the name of the Lord, People: who made heaven and earth. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord, People: and your forgave the iniquity of my sin. CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION Almighty God, our maker and redeemer, we poor sinners confess unto you that we are by nature sinful and unclean and that we have sinned against you by thought, word, and deed. Wherefore we flee for refuge to your infinite mercy, seeking and imploring your grace for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ. People: O most merciful God, who has given your only-begotten Son to die for us, have mercy upon us and for His sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by your Holy Spirit increase in us true knowledge of you and of your will and true obedience to your Word, to the end that by your grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. People: Amen. Almighty God, our heavenly Father, has had mercy upon us and has given His only Son to die for us and for His sake forgives us all our sins. To those who believe on His name He gives power to become the children of God and has promised them His Holy Spirit. He that believes and is baptized shall be saved. Grant this, Lord, unto us all. RESPONSIVE PSALM 29 Ascribe to the LORD, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. 2

People: Ascribe to the LORD the glory due His name; worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness. The voice of the LORD is over the waters; People: the God of glory thunders, the LORD, over many waters. The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is full of majesty. People: The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars; the LORD breaks the cedars of Lebanon. He makes Lebanon to skip like a calf, and Sirion like a young wild ox. People: The voice of the LORD flashes forth flames of fire. The voice of the LORD is over the waters; People: the God of glory thunders, the LORD, over many waters. The voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness; the LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. People: The voice of the LORD makes the deer give birth and strips the forests bare, and in His temple all cry, Glory! The LORD sits enthroned over the flood; the LORD sits enthroned as king forever. People: May the LORD give strength to His people! May the LORD bless His people with peace! The voice of the LORD is over the waters; People: the God of glory thunders, the LORD, over many waters. GLORIA PATRI Page 186 Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. KYRIE Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. GLORIA IN EXCELSIS Page 187 People: Glory be to God on high: and on earth peace, good will toward men. We praise Thee, we bless Thee, we worship Thee, we glorify Thee, we give thanks to thee, for thy great glory. O Lord God, heav nly King. God the Father Almighty. 3 continued O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sin of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For Thou only art holy; Thou only art the Lord. Thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen. SALUTATION & PRAYER OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. People: And with thy spirit. People: Amen. Let us pray. Father in heaven, at the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River your voice proclaimed Him to be your beloved Son and anointed Him with the Holy Spirit. Lead all who are baptized in His name to be faithful in the hearing of your Word and in the living out of their callings as your children; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. WORD OLD TESTAMENT READING Isaiah 43:1 7 (The Lord calls His own by name.) But now thus says the LORD, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. I give Egypt as your ransom, Cush and Seba in exchange for you. Because you are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you, I give men in return for you, peoples in exchange for your life. Fear not, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you. I will say to the north, Give up, and to the south, Do not withhold; bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the end of the earth, everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made. Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. 4

EPISTLE Romans 6:1 11 (We are baptized into Christ.) What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. 5:00 CHOIR ANTHEM All is Well ALLELUIA Page 190 People: Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the third chapter. People: Glory be to Thee, O Lord. HOLY GOSPEL Luke 3:15 22 (Jesus is baptized in the Jordan River.) As the people were in expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Christ, John answered them all, saying, I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire. So with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people. But Herod the tetrarch, who had been reproved by him for Herodias, his brother's wife, and for all the evil things that Herod had done, added this to them all, that he locked up John in prison. Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heavens were opened, and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased. 5 This is the Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise be to Thee, O Christ. APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. CHILDREN S MESSAGE SERMON HYMN #594 6 continued God s Own Child, I Gladly Say It God s own child, I gladly say it: I am baptized into Christ! He, because I could not pay it, Gave my full redemption price. Do I need earth s treasures many? I have one worth more than any That brought me salvation free Lasting to eternity! Sin, disturb my soul no longer: I am baptized into Christ! I have comfort even stronger: Jesus cleansing sacrifice. Should a guilty conscience seize me Since my Baptism did release me In a dear forgiving flood, Sprinkling me with Jesus blood? Satan, hear this proclamation: I am baptized into Christ! Drop your ugly accusation, I am not so soon enticed. Now that to the font I ve traveled, All your might has come unraveled, and, against your tyranny, God, my Lord, unites with me! Death, you cannot end my gladness; I am baptized into Christ! When I die, I leave all sadness To inherit paradise! Though I lie in dust and ashes Faith s assurance brightly flashes: Baptism has the strength divine To make life immortal mine.

There is nothing worth comparing To this lifelong comfort sure! Open eyed my grave is staring: Even there I ll sleep secure. Though my flesh awaits its raising, Still my soul continues praising: I am baptized into Christ; I m a child of paradise! SERMON Called by Name Isaiah 43:1-7 OFFERTORY Page 192 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from Thy presence, and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation, and uphold me with Thy free spirit. Amen. OFFERING As your offering is collected, please sign our attendance book located at the end of the pew. If you are a visitor, please leave your address and phone. After you are finished, please pass the book along to others in your pew, and return the book to the center aisle. You may check the register to see the names of those to greet after the service. PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH Created in God s image, called by His name, and washed clean in Baptism, we come this day before our gracious God with intercessions and prayers for all people as they have need. Blessed Lord, you wonderfully foreshadowed the promise of Baptism in the rescue of Noah from the flood, in the passing of your people through the Red Sea, and in the ceremonial washings of your law. In Christ and by His Baptism, you have kept your Word and made Baptism to be the water of new life. People: Give us your Holy Spirit, that we may trust the promise of Baptism and become the new and holy people you have declared us to be. 7 Holy God, the nations still live in darkness and in the despair of death. Raise up prophets who will address them with your Word and truth, and accompany this preaching with your Holy Spirit so that those who hear may believe. Bless our together in mission partners, Pastor Chuck Ferry and Rachel Meyer, along with all pastors and missionaries who share the Gospel. People: Bring success to all mission work, through our own congregation, in our district and in every place where Christ s church is at work to share the Gospel. Gracious God, bless your Church; especially Matthew, president of our Synod; John, president of our district; Harold, our circuit visitor; our pastors; and all church workers. People: Make them wise unto salvation and faithful in all the duties and responsibilities assigned to them for our benefit. Lord of the Church, you are enthroned above the heavens and yet you are mindful of all things on earth, especially regarding your church. We commend to you Pastor Bender as he prayerfully deliberates the call recently extended to him. People: Bless him with wisdom and understanding, guide and lead him through this process, and bring him to a decision in accord with your will. Lord of all power, all the might of man is nothing before you. We ask your blessing on all those who serve your people in government, the police, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, disaster relief and the armed forces. People: Give them good and honest hearts for their service, and lead them by your Word to know and do what is good and right for all people and in accordance with your will. Lord of compassion and mercy, no suffering passes before you unnoticed. Grant comfort, peace and strength to John Gieschen and family as they mourn the death of Sue. Give to the sick, those hospitalized, those recovering, and those troubled in mind and heart both your healing presence and your healing peace. Especially hear us on behalf of Edith, Henry, LuEva, Nancy, Don, Barbara, Larry, Marge, Dolores, Herb, Dick, Cliff, Cindy, Arlene, Nancy, Shirley, Gladys, Russ, John, Arlene, Jack, Shirley, Jonathan, Sarah and those now named in our hearts. (Brief silence.) People: Be their companion in solitude, their healing in affliction, their 8 deliverer from trouble and their life in death. Loving Father, we come to receive at this altar His gift of Christ s body and blood for both life and salvation. Help us to commune this day in good conscience, discerning Christ s body in this Eucharist and repenting of our sins.

People: Bless us with faithful hearts and holy lives to bear the fruit of this gracious gift of love and mercy bestowed upon us. Eternal God, you have claimed us your own people by Baptism. We remember with thanksgiving all those who went before us in the faith, who passed the faith on to us and who now rest in Christ from all their labors. People: Make us as faithful in our own time, keep us faithful to the calling of our baptismal covenant, that we may be raised from the death of sin to life with Christ each day and, finally to live in perfect freedom forever. Into your hands, O almighty and everlasting God, do we commend all for whom we pray this day, trusting in your mercy, through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, to whom be glory now and forever. People: Amen. SACRAMENT PREFACE Page 194 The Lord be with you. People: And with thy spirit. Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them up unto the Lord. Let us give thanks unto the Lord, our God. People: It is meet and right so to do. It is truly meet, right and salutary evermore praising you and saying: SANCTUS Page 195 Holy, holy, holy Lord God of Sabaoth; heav n and earth are full of Thy glory. Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He, blessed is He, blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest. THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. 9 People: For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. THE WORDS OF OUR LORD Page 197 THE PEACE OF THE LORD The peace of the Lord be with you always. People: Amen. Dear name! The rock on which I build, My shield and hiding place; My never failing treasury filled With boundless stores of grace. O Jesus, shepherd, guardian, friend, My Prophet, Priest, and King, My Lord, my life, my way, my end, Accept the praise I bring. How weak the effort of my heart, How cold my warmest thought! But when I see Thee as Thou art, I ll praise Thee as I ought. Till then I would Thy love proclaim With ev ry fleeting breath; And may the music of Thy name Refresh my soul in death! HYMN #606 I Lay My Sins on Jesus I lay my sins on Jesus, The spotless Lamb of God; He bears them all and frees us From accursed load. I bring my guilt to Jesus To wash my crimson stains Clean in His blood most precious Till not a spot remains. I lay my wants on Jesus; All fullness dwells in Him; He heals all my diseases; My soul He does redeem. I lay my griefs on Jesus, My burdens and my cares; He from them all releases; He all my sorrows shares. I rest my soul on Jesus, This weary soul of mine; His right hand me embraces; I on His breast recline. I love the name of Jesus, Immanuel, Christ, the Lord; Like fragrance on the breezes His name abroad is poured. COMMON DISMISSAL NUNC DIMITTIS Page 199 Lord, now lettest Thou Thy servant depart in peace according to Thy word, for mine eyes have seen Thy salvation, which Thou hast prepared before the face of all people, a light to lighten the Gentiles and the glory of Thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. 11 THANKSGIVING O give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good. People: and His mercy endureth forever. Let us pray. O God the Father, the fountain and source of all goodness, who in loving-kindness sent your only-begotten Son into the flesh, we thank you that for His sake you have given us pardon and peace in this Sacrament, and we ask you not to forsake your children but always to rule our hearts and minds by your Holy Spirit that we may be enabled constantly to serve you; through Jesus Christ, your son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. People: Amen. SALUTATION & BENEDICAMUS The Lord be with you. People: and with thy spirit. Bless we the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. BENEDICTION The Lord bless you and keep you. CLOSING HYMN #917 Savior, Again to Thy Dear Name We Raise Savior, again to Thy dear name we raise With one accord our parting hymn of praise; Once more we bless Thee ere our worship cease, Then, lowly bending, wait Thy word of peace. Grant us Thy peace upon our homeward way; With Thee began, with Thee shall end, the day. Guard Thou the lips from sin, the hearts from shame, That in this house have called upon Thy name. Grant us Thy peace, Lord, through the coming night; Turn Thou for us its darkness into light. From harm and danger keep Thy children free; For dark and light are both alike to Thee. 12 continued

Grant us Thy peace throughout our earthly life, Our balm in sorrow and our stay in strife; Then, when Thy voice shall bid our conflict cease, Call us, O Lord, to Thine eternal peace.
