October 2015 Island in the Son UNITED METHODIST CHURCH World Communion Scholar Sees Dreams Come True Elsa Noemi Meza and her family were considered second- or third-class citizens. She and her siblings survived by selling eggs, fruits, and ice cream on the streets of Lima, Peru. An American missionary baptized Meza, and after 30 years of saving, she and her daughter made her dream of living in the United States a reality. CORPUS CHRISTI,, TEXAST It was a gift from God. Until that scholarship, I had no money or resources. I now see my vocation as serving others, specifically immigrant Latina women. (Meza is second from left in photo.) Nelson Mandela said, Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world. And the people of the United Methodist Church believe that all of God s children have been created and gifted to build the kingdom Jesus ushered in. Your communion offering on World Communion Sunday, October 4, will help put the most powerful tool to change the world in more hands. Will you give generously to help them become the world-changers God created them to be? Betty Thomas, Worship Team Chair A victim of domestic violence, Meza volunteered at the Latin Women in Action, a Chicago group that helps women in abusive situations. The Lord gave me the spirit to make something good out of my bad experience, she says. Meza earned bachelors and master s degrees, and her pastor told her that she had the qualities needed to be a pastor. He suggested she apply to a United Methodist-related theological seminary, and thanks to a World Communion Sunday scholarship, Meza has completed her first year. If it hadn t been for my scholarship, I would not have been able to go to school, she says. - continued - NEXT MEETING: Tuesday, October 6 6 PM The Nominations Report (committees and teams for 2016-2017-2018), goals for 2016, lay speaker (now called lay servant ) reports, and pastor compensation must be completed before and voted on at the October 6 Church Council meeting so it is ready to be presented for our November 8 Cloud 2 Charge Conference.
