October 2015 Island in the Son UNITED METHODIST CHURCH World Communion Scholar Sees Dreams Come True Elsa Noemi Meza and her family were considered second- or third-class citizens. She and her siblings survived by selling eggs, fruits, and ice cream on the streets of Lima, Peru. An American missionary baptized Meza, and after 30 years of saving, she and her daughter made her dream of living in the United States a reality. CORPUS CHRISTI,, TEXAST It was a gift from God. Until that scholarship, I had no money or resources. I now see my vocation as serving others, specifically immigrant Latina women. (Meza is second from left in photo.) Nelson Mandela said, Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world. And the people of the United Methodist Church believe that all of God s children have been created and gifted to build the kingdom Jesus ushered in. Your communion offering on World Communion Sunday, October 4, will help put the most powerful tool to change the world in more hands. Will you give generously to help them become the world-changers God created them to be? Betty Thomas, Worship Team Chair A victim of domestic violence, Meza volunteered at the Latin Women in Action, a Chicago group that helps women in abusive situations. The Lord gave me the spirit to make something good out of my bad experience, she says. Meza earned bachelors and master s degrees, and her pastor told her that she had the qualities needed to be a pastor. He suggested she apply to a United Methodist-related theological seminary, and thanks to a World Communion Sunday scholarship, Meza has completed her first year. If it hadn t been for my scholarship, I would not have been able to go to school, she says. - continued - NEXT MEETING: Tuesday, October 6 6 PM The Nominations Report (committees and teams for 2016-2017-2018), goals for 2016, lay speaker (now called lay servant ) reports, and pastor compensation must be completed before and voted on at the October 6 Church Council meeting so it is ready to be presented for our November 8 Cloud 2 Charge Conference. Reports from Trustees, Finance, and other ministry teams will be required to be submitted to the church office no later than October 26 to be included in the charge conference packet that we provide to our District Superintendent, Rev. Eradio Valverde, Jr.

Beach Treasures Page 2 October 2015 CLOUD TWO NOV. 8 The 2015 Cloud Two Charge Conference, which includes all the Corpus Christi churches of the Coastal Bend District (that includes IITS UMC!), has been scheduled for Sunday, November 8, 2015 at 3 PM at Grace United Methodist Church (14521 Northwest Blvd.). All clergy and lay members (previously referred to as lay delegates for IITS, that is Cheri Tomscha, with Bev Firmani as an alternate) are required to be present for these charge conferences. The Island in the Son UMC Care Team collects canned goods/nonperishable items on the 1st Sunday of each month to help supply the Timon s Ministries Crisis Pantry. Bring your donations to IITS and drop them in the Timon s basket in the foyer. Timon s Ministries Crisis Pantry Timon s can always use the following items to give to their Crisis Pantry Clients: 1 lb. packages of 100% whole grain rice & pastas 1 lb. packages of beans Small canned meats for weekly packages Pop-top, ready to eat individual servings of food/soup Small Deodorants and Razors Timon s Ministries is located at 10501 SPID (in Flour Bluff next to Pizza Hut) Friends, If you are moved to reach out to help others... If it breaks your heart to learn families have lost everything from a natural disaster... If you are able-bodied and have some time available to volunteer... Maybe you can train to be prepared to help the next time. UMCOR's model equips people to be of the most help immediately after a disaster by deploying Early Response Teams. We work in the aftermath of floods, fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, and even explosions to offer hope to survivors. Coming soon to a church near you: on October 24, FUMC Corpus Christi will host the ERT Training from 8 AM until 4:30 PM. Brochures with more information are available on the Opportunities table and on the foyer bulletin boards. Space is limited REGISTER EARLY. ERT certification includes background check, ID badge, Team T-shirt, manual and lunch. Recertification is required every 4 years. If you have deployed as an ERT volunteer and your badge is expired, it can be renewed on-line without attending the day-long class. Register or Renew on-line at Riotexas.org under Mission Vitality/Outreach. In Christ's Joy, Rev. Beth Tatum Mathis First United Methodist Church 361-547-3381 or cell 713-724-8873
