P A G E 2 The Rabbi s ReMarks First of all, Nancy and I want to extend heartfelt and sincere thanks for your concern, your kind thoughts and your prayers following her recent emergency surgery. It was an extremely frightening situation, and knowing that all of you were with us in thought and spirit was most encouraging. The summer has gone by very quickly. The weather here seems to be alternating between withering heat and torrential rain, but I m not complaining, especially when I think of the areas of the country that have truly suffered from the effects of flood and drought. This summer is marked by a number of special wedding anniversaries and birthdays within our circle of friends. These milestone occasions are truly times to celebrate. They provide us with the opportunity to reflect on what is important in life- friends and family- and to look back on our defeats as well as our triumphs and on the blessing and privilege of having made the journey. Along with those who are celebrating, I invoke the words of tradition: we thank the Almighty for having kept us alive, sustained us and enabled us to attain these occasions of joy. Mazal tov! These are contentious times in our state and our nation and in the forum of Jewish public affairs. We are in the run-up to the Presidential primaries and caucuses with candidates vying for attention and financial support. The Vienna agreement, concluded in mid-july between Iran and the P-5 + 1 powers, has aroused a great deal of passion (in favor and in opposition) within the Jewish community as well as within the circles of government. A study paper circulated recently by the Jewish Council for Public Affairs in reference to the Iran deal struck just the right note. After summarizing the arguments for and against the agreement, the authors expressed the wish that all debates and deliberations be conducted in a spirit of civility without name-calling or impugning the motives of those on the other side. This would certainly be a good rule to follow not just regarding the Vienna agreement but for the conduct of politics, government and public policy debate in general at all levels. August 16 th marks the beginning of Elul, the month we devote to spiritual preparation for the Days of Awe. Soon Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur will be upon us, and I look forward to this annual season of renewal and to the ushering in of a new year. Peace and blessing. Enjoy the remaining days of summer. Rabbi Barry A. Marks
