St John the Baptist Anglican Church Newsletter April 2014 47 Church Street, Northcote 0627 09 480 7568 / office@stjohnsanglican.org.nz / www.stjohnsanglican.org.nz Cate s Cogitations As the month of April dawns, the 2014 Easter season month, Gregory and I will be about arriving on the shores of Vietnam. At this end of the journey, still a week away from departure and embroiled in work, it all seems a bit unreal, I guess once that plane takes off it will be very real. You will see in the outlined box in the magazine the services over April, in Holy Week and Easter and who will be leading each service. They remain fairly much as usual just that there will be no Seder meal prior to the Stripping of the Altar and Tenebrae service on Maundy Thursday and on Easter Day the 8am service will take the form of the 6am dawn service. Thank you to all of you who have and I m sure will make sure St Johns continues to be a place of generous hospitality and genuine worship in my absence. Our liturgical calendar and that of the Syrian Orthodox church happen to coincide for Easter this year and we have been able quite skilfully to negotiate the use of the church so that we each are able to celebrate the important liturgies of Easter. In case you happen to be on cleaning or brass or redressing the church for Easter Day I have given to Shireen the schedule of church use for both communities so that you can plan your duties around the various service times. Shireen has created a schedule of this, a copy is on the notice board at the back of the church as well as included in the magazine. I trust this will not unduly inconvenience anyone. Last Sunday, March 23rd, we had a goodly number of people attend the occasion on which we thanked those involved in the process of successfully restoring the belfry. Thank you Colin Couch for being a font of wisdom and having connections with all the people necessary for such a project to be completed not only successfully but to a high standard and for your grand memory of things historical. I d also like to thank Barbara McIlroy for again ensuring there was a delicious afternoon tea and thank those amazing makers of food of great temptation (even if it is Lent, but Sundays don t count!). Next Sunday, March 30th, as the last Sunday of March, is the date of our AGM and I hope you are able to attend. As I mentioned last month we are seeking a new Treasurer, although useful it is not a requirement for the Treasurer to be a vestry member (just in case you re wondering if you might like to do it but don t like meetings). From what I understand we re also looking forward to some new faces on vestry which is wonderful news, you know it s not too late!! Thank you to those who ve given of your time and talents to St Johns through your involvement on vestry and have decided to take a break for a time. Because I m going to be away for Easter, my early Easter greetings to you all and an early: Christ is risen! He is risen indeed With every blessing Cate FRIDAY, 11th APRIL 10.00am We will be making Palm Crosses in the St Jude s Room. Please join in and bring your scissors. Morning tea will be provided. We started the morning with a ferry ride into the city and a cup of coffee across the road from the ferry building. We then assembled at the 360 Discovery terminus to board our tour boat. The tour was just wonderful; we saw so much of the activity at the Port close-up and were even lucky enough to watch someone bungy-jump off the bridge! We rounded off the day with lunch together at the downtown food court and a ferry ride back again. If you are interested in this tour, go to this address for the schedule of free Port tours for 2014 www.poal.co.nz/community_environment/port_tour s.htm
