40 Days of Love Pastor Eric Zacharias 14745 Co. Rd. 153 Cologne, MN 55322 February 2018 Rev. Eric Zacharias Pastor Home: 952-466-2123 Mr. Chris Dehning Principal Office: 952-466-3379 Church/School Office Phone: 952-466-3379 Fax: 952-466-2703 E-mail: leahjanzenzion@gmail.com Website: www.zion-cologne.org Mission Statement Zion Lutheran Church, Cologne, MN is a branch of Christ s family saved by grace alone, rooted in God s love, and growing in faith through worship, teaching, fellowship, and service as we reach out to others with the good news of Jesus. Lent is 40 days of love. Let s think about Lent that way, especially this year, since Ash Wednesday falls on February 14, Valentine s Day! One pastor pointed out that Lent is a time of fasting, so, how sad for dad that he can t run out and present his wife with a box of chocolates! My thought is that we could still lavish those gifts in advance, like on Transfiguration Sunday and show love throughout the 40 days. Our Lenten theme is Come to me with your Heart! It s based on Joel, where God tells his people, Yet even now, says the Lord, come back to me with all your heart! (Joel 2:12). Old Testament stories show us how God overcomes evil with his goodness and love. These stories forecast the struggle of Jesus, who overcame all things for us by way of his suffering and death on the cross. Feb. 14 Sarah & Abraham - Reality! Father forgive them! Feb. 21 Rebecca & Jacob - Deceit! Truly, I say to you Feb. 28 Rachel & Joseph - Favorites! Son, here is your mother. Mar. 7 Zipporah & Moses Neglect! - Why have your forsaken... Mar. 14 Deborah & Barak - Faith! It is finished! Mar. 21 Esther & Mordecai - Trust! I commend my spirit! Sin is a rebellion against God, a turning away from God. God loves us, so he calls for us to return. Sin dulls our hearing and confuses our being, making it impossible for us to return on our own. That is why Jesus came to us, bringing his whole heart, soul, mind, and strength to do the Father s will. God s love is at work in us, as his Holy Spirit tugs at our heart, soul, and mind to repent and turn back to the Lord. Join us Wednesdays for worship and meditation upon that sacrifice of Christ to bring us back to God. There are two opportunities to worship: 3:30 and 7 PM. On Ash Wednesday you can receive ashes and also partake of Holy Communion. The ashen cross on our foreheads reminds us of our mortality, but also of Christ, who carries away the sins and sorrows that would destroy us. A meal will be offered after the 3:30 PM service, hosted by groups of Zion. Blessings in Christ, Pastor Eric Zacharias

Tiger Tales It's February, so I bet you can guess what I am writing about that s right, my birthday! Oh, you thought I was going to talk about Valentine s Day, or love, or the color pink or something? Anyway, my birthday is February 10. I am not using this platform to complete my Amazon wish list and get as many gifts as possible from my Zion family. I just wanted everyone to know that my birthday is coming up, and I am excited about it. No, I don t have a big party planned. No, this is not a landmark birthday (that was last year). And no, I m really not asking all of you for gifts. Now you might all be wondering, Why is he so excited for his birthday, then? I am excited because I am a year older, a year wiser, and I still have the opportunity to serve my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I have the privilege of being the principal of the school that is the best kept secret in Carver County. I get to work with other amazing teachers who care about their students as much as I do. I have the honor of seeing the smiling faces of 3 year-olds, 1st graders, and even 7th graders each and every day at Zion. What could be better than that? Mr. Chris Dehning Respect: I will honor God's word, adults, other students, property, and myself. Philippians 2:3 Affirmation: I will build others up by emphasizing their positive traits. 1 Thessalonians 3:12 Our support system (which includes our pastor, special education teachers, and even our secretary) genuinely encourages learners to reach these expectations. Zion Lutheran School has committed itself to educating children for over 150 years. Central to every caring act at Zion Lutheran School is Christ's love. When the children learn they are loved, by God and others, they learn to love Him and each other, thereby having their lives touched forever. And unquestionably, that is something I am excited about. With Jesus as our example, and God's word as our daily guide, we have these expectations at Zion: Servanthood: I will seek opportunities to be helpful, considerate, and courteous. Mark 9:35 & Galatians 5:13 Responsibility: I will strive to control my attitude, actions, and abilities. Galatians 5:22-23 Resolution: I will follow appropriate steps to solve my problems. Matthew 18:15-17 Cooperation: I will cooperate with others for the success of everyone. 1 Peter 3:8
