May God bless abundantly Phyllis and Steve for their wholehearted dedication and may they continue to be vessels of God s love for many more years. If so, you and your family are invited to attend the Graduate Appreciation Mass taking place on Saturday, May 23 at the 4:30 PM Mass in the Church at St. Mary s. BINGO KITCHEN NEWS The BINGO Kitchen needs some help. One of our primary volunteers needs to take some time off to address a personal issue. If no one steps forward to fill this spot the BINGO Kitchen will only be able to operate with a reduced menu. That means fewer goodies at BINGO and less income for this excellent fund raiser. If you would like to help out, please call Carol Rippole at 412-331-2420. Thank you in advance for helping. PIZZA KITCHEN NEWS The Pizza Kitchen will be open on Friday, May 1 and it will be Falagone Friday (and frozen gnocchi will be on sale, too). After that, the Pizza Kitchen will be closed for the summer and our dedicated, hard working volunteers will be taking a well deserved break. Remember, most of our menu items, especially pepperoni rolls, spinach rolls, sausage rolls and falagones freeze very well. So, stock up this Friday for all your parties (Communion, Graduation, Birthday) or just for a summer get together. We ll return in September. Thank you for your support of the parish Pizza Kitchen. PASTOR'S CORNER Fr. Lou Vallone The Holy Week ceremonies at both St. John of God and St. Catherine were outstanding: the weather cooperated, the sacristans, lay ministers, servers, choirs and musicians were excellent in their ministries. Moreover, people turned out in record numbers at both places. I was on a Pastor's high with joy. And then the feedback began. The Easter Pastor's Corner about the "Easter bunnies" and being welcoming to visitors and sparse attendees had an intro at St. John of God that St. Catherine did not. I mentioned there that I was writing the Corner at the behest of a parishioner who had seen a family leave the Church at St. Mary at Easter last year when someone complained that all the visitors were taking up the seats of the regular attendees. I received the following in the postal mail that week: "Dear Fr. Lou Vallone, "I was a visitor to your beautiful church (St. Mary) and the services were very nice. I was appalled to read the Pastor's Corner. At the request of a parishioner who witnessed, etc., etc. This tells me that you are not in control of your flock; it is your duty as pastor to bring people together in faith and love. This seemed to me to be one sided. Is the other person going to get the opportunity to state there (sic) case, innocent until proven guilty. Why are you not talking with these people? Do you have a problem dealing with people? Something similar happen (sic) in my parish but our pastor brought the people together in a very civil and understanding way, it made him very respected and loved by the parishioners. I am taking your bulletin to show to my pastor. On another note, did not many people witness the death and crucifixion of Our Lord; you make the conclusion. I was here visiting family and friends and probably will not return to this area in the distant future but know that I will pray for you and your parishioners. At St. Catherine, our sacristan, every day, is Rosemarie Morris. She was the first parishioner I met before my assignment was announced when I stopped one day on my motorcycle to see the church and she did not want to unlock the door to let me in. Rosemarie has been serving as a domestic of the Lord for more than four score years, and her hearing is not what it once was perhaps. I received a voice mail Easter week from someone who said they were visiting at the 9:00 AM Mass and went on for 5 minutes in the message saying how horrified she was that I "hollered" at that "poor old lady" about turning off the water in the fountain. The woman's voice went on about what a mean and terrible priest I was, how she pitied this parish with being stuck with me, and that I upset her so much that she would never return to Mass here as long as I was Pastor. I also received an e-mail at St. Catherine from a nonparishioner questioning why I was spending money to expand the parking lot for such a small church, that we didn't need it. When I pointed out we needed the parking especially for Saturday evening Mass, he opined: "And I don t like a Saturday Mass at 4 p.m. nor at 5 p.m. Those times are way too early. Those times are good in the winter time for the older people but not in the summer time. I like a 7 p.m. Mass on Saturdays. A 6 p.m. Mass on a given Saturday is even too early. In my book also. I don t know why people like an early Saturday evening Mass. Who can afford to go out every Saturday night, hum? That is ridiculous for sure." Sighhhhhhhhhh.......... Jesus Christ is Risen, Alleluia! "God bless you A Visitor" continued next column..
