Let one or two teachers lead activities in different areas of the room while another teacher greets parents and kids at the door. JUNE / WEEK / 3s 5s Moving Out Lead this activity in your home living area. Whatcha Do: Invite children to pack the items in the suitcase and pretend to move to a new home. Talk about all the different things you have to pack when you move. Travel to another location in the room and let the children unpack the suitcase and pretend to get settled in at their new home. Whatcha Say: Have any of you ever moved? What did you pack? In our Bible story, a mother and her daughter-in-law packed up and moved to a country far away. I wonder what they packed for their trip. A suitcase Shirts Jackets Robes Slippers Blankets Other items from the home living area Make It Fun: Introductory Activities

Going on a Trip Whatcha Do: Guide kids to sit with you in a circle on the floor. Lead the kids in a game by saying, I'm going on a trip, and I'm taking my shoes' (or whatever other item you'd like to take). Next guide the child beside you to say the same phrase, adding another item he would take on the trip. For example, I'm going on a trip and I'm taking my shoes and a pillow. As you go around the circle, let each child add to the list. Assist those who have trouble remembering the items mentioned before their turn. (Note: You may want to let three-year-olds just add their item to the phrase but not ask them to repeat all the other items.) You add a rhythm pattern to help keep the pace of the game by having the kids repeatedly pat their thighs twice and then clap their hands twice. Psalm 9:8 truths Psalm 9:8 No supplies needed. JUNE / WEEK / 3s 5s Whatcha Say: Today we're going to find out about two people in the Bible who went on a very long trip. Do you think they took any of the items we've used in our game? What do you think they took with them? Family Portraits Whatcha Do: Let children dress up in clothes that make them look like a father, mother, sister or brother, grandma or grandpa, or baby. Group them together and take pictures of each family. Whatcha Say: At start of the activity: Let's pretend to be members in a different family. You use the clothes and items we have to dress up like a mom, dad, sister or brother, grandma or grandpa, or baby. Then I will take pictures of your new family. At the end of the activity: Family members take care of each other and love each other. Today in our Bible story, we'll find out about two members of a family who really cared for each other. JUNE / WEEK / 3s 5s Choose an adult who relates well to preschoolers to tell the Introductory Sketch. If possible, use the same adult all year. To add variety, consider videotaping the sketch and playing the video during Make It True. A Worship Leader and live instruments are recommended. Encourage children to be active during worship by providing assorted percussion instruments and/or incorporating appropriate hand motions as described in the teaching instructions that follow. Introductory Sketch HOST: (Enters carrying suitcase) Hi, kids! I found the suitcase I had when I was little. It made me think of the first time I remember my parents taking a trip without me. When I was four, my daddy went on a business trip and my mommy went with him. I was so sad when they packed their suitcases. 'What will I do? Who will take care of me?' I asked them. They told me not to worry that they had a surprise for meand that everything would be fine. But I wasn't so sure. I was a little worried. A child's overnight suitcase 3 Make It True: Large Group

Then I heard the doorbell ring. I went with my daddy to who it was. It was my grandma! I was happy to her. We always had fun together, and I loved her so much. My daddy told my grandma that I was upset that he and Mommy were leaving for their trip and I would be alone. Grandma just laughed and told me that I wouldn't be alone I'd be with her! She took me to my room, and we packed this little suitcase with my clothes, my blanket, and my favorite stuffed animal. Then I went and stayed with Grandma while Mommy and Daddy were gone. We baked oatmeal cookies, went to the park, and played games. I was afraid I would be alone, but God gave me my grandma to take care of me. I'm glad God gives me family to care for me. Who help me? God made people who help me. Say that with me. Who help me? Psalm 9:8 truths Psalm 9:8 Godloves me JUNE / WEEK / 3s 5s KIDS and HOST: God made people who help me. HOST: That right. Bible Story STORYTELLER: (Enters carrying Bible) Good morning! I have a story to tell you about someone who cared for a person in her family. Sometimes we need someone to care for us. Sometimes I need help. Who help me? KIDS and STORYTELLER: God made people who help me. STORYTELLER: God made me, and He made people to care for me, like people in my family. This story is from the Bible, and the Bible is true. The Bible tells us what God wants us to do. God wants families to care for each other, like the family in this story. A woman named Naomi was moving with her family from their home in Judah to a far away land. (Place the lengths of material in the box as you speak.) Naomi packed up her things. Then she packed for her husband, Elimelech (ee-lihm-eh-lehk). Finally, she packed for her two sons, Mahlon (MAH-luhn) and Kilion (KIHL-ih-ahn). Then Naomi and her family moved far away to a place called Moab (MO-ab). (Move the packed box to the other side of the Large Group area.) Naomi and her family lived in Moab. Her sons got married to women named Orpah (AWR-puh) and Ruth. Then a sad thing happened. First Naomi's husband died, and then both her sons died. Naomi was very sad. All her family had died except for her son's wives. Naomi decided she wanted to move back home to Judah. She packed her things, but she no longer needed her husband's things or her son's things (take the dark brown material and the striped materials out of the box as you speak). Naomi was going back home alone. (Show the inside of the box, which now only contains the cloth that represents Naomi.) She had no one to care for her. Naomi said goodbye to her son's wives. They all cried. Orpah kissed Naomi goodbye and left, but Ruth stayed behind. Ruth told Naomi, 'Don't beg me to leave you. Where you go, I will go.' (Take Ruth's material and place it in the box with Naomi's.) Ruth promised to go with Naomi, to stay with her and care for her. So Ruth traveled back to Judah with Naomi, and Naomi was not alone. Psalm 9:8 truths Psalm 9:8 A Bible marked at Ruth :-9 A cardboard box A length of pastel material to represent Naomi's clothing A length of dark brown material to represent her husband's clothing Two pieces of striped material to represent Naomi's sons A bright or jeweltoned piece of material to represent Ruth Set the box on one side of the Large Group area. Place all the folded material, except the piece representing Ruth, beside the box. Place the material representing Ruth on the other side of the area. 5 JUNE / WEEK / 3s 5s Make It True: Large Group

When Naomi's family died, God gave her Ruth to be her family. God gives me family to care for me. God always gives me people to care for and help me. Who help me? KIDS and STORYTELLER: God made people who help me. PRAYER STORYTELLER: God is kind to give me people to help me. Let's pray and thank God for taking care of us. (Pause as children close their eyes and bow their heads.) Thank You, God, for loving me and giving me family to care for me. I'm glad that You made me and made people who help me. Amen. Be kind and loving to each Ephesians 4:32 other. Psalm 9:8 truths Psalm 9:8 JUNE / WEEK / 3s 5s Worship WORSHIP LEADER: In our story, Ruth showed love for Naomi by going with her. I love others, too. Let's praise God with a song about how He wants us to show love, just like He shows love for us. Lead kids to sing Give a Little Love, track 5, from the CD Wait. If possible, perform the songs live with a worship leader and instruments. You may wish to sing just the chorus of this song. If you use a CD and sing the whole song, encourage children to dance or sway to the music during the verses. As you sing the chorus, do the following motions: Give a little love (place hands over heart and then move them outward) Walk a mile (march in place) Say a kind word (point to lips) or two (hold up two fingers) Prove that God's love (hold up both hands in the air) Is in you (pull hands back down over heart) A New Century Version Bible marked at Ephesians 4:32 A CD player The CDs Wait and UpStreet Kids: Hey God! Crepe paper or cloth streamers Also, use this month's original worship song, which you download from the Web site during this segment or whenever you like this month. 6 Make It True: Large Group

WORSHIP LEADER: That song is about giving others the love God gives us. Our Bible verse this month is about that, too. It says, 'Be kind and loving to each other.' That's Ephesians 4:32. I'm going to teach you some motions that go along with the verse, and then we'll say the verse and do the motions together. (Say the verse while doing the following motions. Then repeat the verse and motions with the kids.) 'Be kind (hug self) and loving (place your hands over your heart) to one another,' (point back and forth at others) Ephesians 4:32 (hold palms together, then open like a book). KIDS and WORSHIP LEADER: (Do motions as well.) 'Be kind and loving to one another,' Ephesians 4:32. Psalm 9:8 truths Psalm 9:8 A FIRST JUNE / WEEK / 3s 5s WORSHIP LEADER: Good job! We should be kind and loving because God is so kind and loving to us. As we sing this next song about God's love, use these streamers to measure out how deep, high, long, and wide God's love is. Give each child a streamer. Lead kids in singing Love Is Deep, track 5, from the CD UpStreet Kids: Hey God! WORSHIP LEADER: I'm so glad God made me and loves me so much! Are you glad God made you? Say that with me. KIDS and WORSHIP LEADER: God made me. WORSHIP LEADER: God made people to help me and care for me. Now it's time to do some more fun things with our teachers. Offer as many of the following activities as your time, facilities, resources, and leadership allow. You may want to lead one activity at a time. Or offer two activities at once and allow half of the kids to participate in each, then switch groups and repeat the activities. Thumbprint Family Whatcha Do: Give each child a piece of white paper with his name written at the bottom of it. Guide each child to press his thumb on the stamp pad and then onto his paper, making a thumbprint on the paper. Let each child make one thumbprint on his paper for each member of his immediate family. Give the children pencils and fine-tip markers. Encourage them to add arms, legs, facial features, hair, etc., to the thumbprints so they look like members of their family. Also add a background that shows something the family enjoys doing together. Whatcha Say: As the children are getting started: Who are the people in your family? Let's count them. That's the number of thumbprints you make on your paper. Stamp pads White paper Colored pencils Fine-tip washable marker Wipes 8 Make It Stick: Application Activities

o pen my At the end of the activity: Your thumbprint families look terrific! Can you think of something one of your family members does to show you that they care for you? (Pause for responses) Just like Ruth cared for Naomi in our Bible story, God made people who help me. Your family members help you. Who help me? God made people who help me. Verse to Music Whatcha Do: Hum the Are You Sleeping? tune to the children, and then let them hum it with you so they become familiar with it. Then lead kids in singing the Bible verse lyrics to that tune. (Note: You may want to sing only a few verses with 3-year-olds, and you even use motions to help them remember the words.) Whatcha Say: At the beginning of the activity: We're going to learn our memory verse this month by singing a song. This is the tune for the song. (Hum the song.) Now you hum the song with me. (Do so.) Great job! Let's sing the song together. Psalm 9:8 truths Psalm 9:8 A copy of Are You Sleeping? (from the Activity Pages on the Web site) JUNE / WEEK / 3s 5s After singing the song: God made people who help me. Who help me? (Pause for responses.) That's right. God made people who help me. What are some things your family does for you? (Pause.) Our families help us in many ways. 9 Make It Stick: Application Activities

Different Families Whatcha Do: Place each category of clothing in its own laundry basket. Divide the children into groups and give each group a basket of clothes to use as they dress up. After they've dressed up, ask them to pose for a picture. The cowboys could pretend to rope an animal or ride a horse. The circus family members could pretend to walk a tight rope, swing on a pretend bar, tame a tiger, or be the strongest boy or girl in the world. Place the pictures on the door or in a location that's visible to the parents as they pick up their children. Ask everyone to look at the biblical family. Talk about Ruth and Naomi, their family, and how they cared for each other. Whatcha Say: At the beginning of the activity: We're going to dress up as different families. Put on some items from your basket to become part of your special family. After you've taken pictures of the kids dressed up: Families are different. You may not be part of a circus family or a cowboy family, but God gave you a family that cares for you and helps you. Who help me? (Pause for responses.) That's right. God made people who help me. o pen my Obstacle Course Whatcha Do: Instruct kids to build an obstacle course with the materials provided. If you have a large group, it may be helpful to build more than one course. Divide kids into pairs and give each pair a large scarf or bandanna. Help one pair to put the scarf or bandanna around one child's waist. The other child should stand behind his partner, close his eyes, and hold the ends of the scarf or bandanna. Send this pair through the obstacle course with the first child guiding his partner. Do this for each pair, allowing only one pair in the obstacle course at a time. Whatcha Say: God made people who help me, just like you helped each other through the obstacle course. Our families help us, too. How does your family help you? (Pause for responses.) Great! Who help me? That's right. God made people who help me. Psalm 9:8 truths Psalm 9:8 Blocks, hula hoops, empty boxes, pillows, blankets, chairs, or any items you have that children use to build an obstacle course JUNE / WEEK / 3s 5s Bread People Be sure to list the foods you will be serving today on the Allergy Alert Poster (from the Activity Pages on the Web site) and post it at the door to your room. Whatcha Do: Lead kids to wash their hands. Use the cookie cutter to cut a shape out of a slice of bread for each child. (Older kids do this themselves.) Give each child a bread person on a plate, a napkin, and a small plastic knife. Let kids spread cream cheese on the bread and add raisins for facial features. (Option: Toast the bread people to make it easier to spread the cream cheese.) Whatcha Say: Who were the two women we talked about today? (Pause for responses.) That's right, Ruth and Naomi. Who stayed with Naomi? (Pause.) Ruth did. Why do you think she stayed with Naomi? (Pause.) She stayed because she cared for Naomi and wanted to help her. God made people who help me.
