Royal Lane Baptist Church Diverse People United in Christ THE MOSAIC September 8, 2010 Volume 24 Issue 17 From the Pastor Roman Catholic theologian Hans Kung preached at the First Baptist Church of Greenville, South Carolina, while I was pastor there. Among the many memorable things he said was that there will be no peace among the nations of the world until there is peace among the religions of the world. Such a time may still be a long way off. According to the Dallas Morning News, a prominent Dallas Baptist pastor has recently offered a very public and sweeping condemnation of the Islamic faith and its adherents. Newspaper columnist Steve Blow characterized the minister as uninformed, un-christian, and un-american. It would be interesting to know what this man s congregation thinks about his statements. As Baptists they are certainly not required to agree with him. I celebrate the priesthood of the believer and the individual freedom that have been so front-and-center in Baptist history, and I believe you do, too. So, instead of worrying about another Baptist church situation, let me reaffirm something for those of us who meet at Royal Lane and Hillcrest. Critical listening is part of a congregation s responsibility. As your pastor and regular preacher, I claim no special access to truth, wisdom, or revelation. I have no hidden knowledge that is not available to you. Infallible I am not, as dozens of relatives will attest. Anna Lou Brown recently caught me attributing Death, Be Not Proud to the wrong author! She has graciously forgiven me. When I am in the pulpit and you are in the pews, play it smart, be a true Baptist, lend me your ears, not your brains! David The next issues of The Mosaic are scheduled for September 22 and October 3, 2010. The deadline for submissions will be 5:00 p.m. Tuesday prior to the date of publication.
