THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD CALLED TO SERVE For many weeks now, we have been celebrating the appearance of the divine presence in human form. As a child, He came to Mary and Joseph, was seen by the shepherds, and then by Three Kings from the East. Today, we celebrate another showing, later in time, to a group gathered at the Jordan River. John hesitated to baptize Jesus, whom he recognized as one mightier than I. But he did as Jesus asked, and the Holy Spirit descended and Heaven s voice spoke to Jesus, You are my beloved Son. Jesus was beginning His public life of teaching and service. Soon He would start calling others to join Him. Peter was one of the first to be called by Jesus. In today s Second Reading, he announces the heart of the message, Peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. Peter was called, as you and I are called to spread that message and to serve God s word. TODAY S READINGS First Reading Isaiah speaks of the Servant whom the Lord upholds; He shall bring forth justice to the nations (Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7) or Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11. Psalm The Lord will bless His people with peace (Psalm 29) or Psalm 104. Second Reading Jesus was anointed by God with the Holy Spirit; He went out healing and doing good (Acts 10:34-38) or Titus 2:11-14; 3:4-7. Gospel A voice comes from Heaven proclaiming Jesus as the beloved Son, with whom God is well pleased (Luke 3:15-16, 21-22). FEAST OF THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD Today, the Church remembers the Baptism of the Lord in the Jordan river, an event that points to the significance of the Sacrament of Baptism for all believers. Eastern rite Catholics celebrate this day as Theophany (from the Greek, meaning appearance of God ) because, in this event, God was revealed in three forms: Jesus the Son, the Holy Spirit as a dove descending from Heaven, and the Father as a voice from the clouds. It is one of the places in the Gospels where Jesus divinity is fully revealed. As the second person of the Trinity, Jesus did not need baptism, but He consented to be baptized by John as a sign of the depth to which He joins our humanity. Jesus baptism was intended for sinners as a sign of repentance. Jesus was without sin of course, but joins us in baptism, just as He took on the consequences of sin in His death, in order to bring us new life. There are some interesting Scriptural connections to this account: +Jesus baptism forms a bookend of sorts to His public life His work begins and ends with baptism. His baptism by John marks the beginning of His ministry. After His resurrection, Jesus commissions the Apostles to Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. +In the Creation account (Gen 1:2), God s Spirit is described as a wind hovering over the water; that same Spirit is shown over the waters of the Jordan here to show that, in baptism, we are made a new creation. +God s voice speaks from the Heavens to identify Jesus as My beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. Baptism is the way in which we become adopted children of God, through the bestowal of the Holy Spirit. The word baptize comes from the Greek word that means to immerse or plunge. In baptism, the faithful are immersed and plunged into Christ s death; they emerge from the water with Christ as a new creation through His resurrection. The water becomes a way to new life. On this Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, let us give thanks for our baptism by which we are made God s children! SPECIAL MASS FOR BABIES BAPTIZED AT ST. CATHARINE S CHURCH IN 2018 TODAY SUNDAY, JANUARY 13 th, 11:00 AM On behalf of Msgr. McAree, Fr. Abraham, Deacon Jurasek and all the Parishioners of St. Catharine s Church, we would like to congratulate these precious little ones, their Parents, Godparents and Families. We thank them for bringing their children to be baptized into the Catholic Faith at St. Catharine s. It is a time for celebration and joy, not only for your family, but also for our Parish Community.

HOLY WATER The custom of placing holy water in a font near the doors of a church is quite old. We make the sign of the cross with blessed water to renew us in the spirit of our Baptism. It signifies our purification before we approach the presence of God in the Church. Holy water also reminds us to pray for health of a soul, body and spirit. Using holy water begs of God a blessing upon those who use it with reverence and devotion. Blessed water is a sacramental. Sacramentals are signs of spiritual effects and favors from God. The Church tells us to use sacramentals like holy water, crucifixes, and rosaries with reverence and respect. Water is full of mystery. Water, although material, can express something spiritual. Water cleanses us, therefore, water is an apt symbol of interior cleansing and purifying. Water is also a symbol of life. Water is necessary for the existence of plants, animals, and people all around the world. The scarcity of water in many parts of the world lends it a special value. In the New Testament, John the Baptist baptized with water as an outward sign of inner sorrow for personal sins. In the Sacrament of Baptism instituted by Christ, we are washed completely and born again of water and the Spirit. Water symbolizes the washing away of sin, inner purification, and receiving and rising to new life in Christ. Remember to bless yourself devoutly with holy water. As you enter a Catholic Church, this action reminds you of your Baptism and of cleansing yourself before you approach the presence of God. As you leave, bless yourself again and recall that Baptism has marked you for eternal life. When we bless ourselves with holy water, we must always remember that we do so In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Sacred silence, holy ocean, gentle water washing over me; help me listen, Holy Spirit, come and speak to me. WINTER BLOOD DRIVE RESULTS 92 PINTS OF BLOOD!! Thank you to our wonderful parishioners who generously came by to give the gift of life to those in need at last Sunday s Winter Blood Drive. We exceeded our goal with an amazing 92 pints of blood!!! Special thanks to our new Blood Drive Chairman, Mike Mulqueen, who worked very hard to bring our numbers up. Mike took over from John Lennon who stepped down last year after running the Drive for the past 11 years, and working at it for 26 years! Thank you, John, and thank you and good luck, Mike! We also thank the St. Dominic s Council of the Knights of Columbus who co-sponsored the Drive and all those members who assisted. RENEW & REBUILD UPDATE Thanks to the generosity of our parishioners we have, to date, received $884,955 in pledges. Our parish goal is $1,260,000, but our true goal is the full participation of every parish family. Pledges are still being accepted, for those of you still making up your minds. Please stop in to the Parish Office for a pledge form. And, please remember that St. Catharine s will keep 74% of the proceeds. WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY JANUARY 18-25 At least once a year, Christians are reminded of Jesus prayer for His disciples that they may be one so that the world may believe (see John 17.21). Hearts are touched and Christians come together to pray for their unity during this special Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. The theme for the Week of Prayer in 2019, "Justice, and only justice, you shall pursue..." is inspired by Deuteronomy 16:18-20. Reflections for the eight days are focused on the chosen theme. To deepen our reflection on unity and justice, the topic of each day has been carefully chosen to present struggles that result from injustice. The themes are Day 1 Let justice roll down like water (Amos 5:24). Day 2 Let your word be Yes, Yes or No, No (Matthew 5:37). Day 3 The Lord is gracious and merciful to all (Psalm 145:8). Day 4 Be content with what you have (Hebrews 13:5). Day 5 To bring good news to the poor (Luke 4:18). Day 6 The Lord of hosts in His name (Jeremiah 10:16). Day 7 Woman, great is your faith! (Matthew 15:28). Day 8 The Lord is my light and my salvation (Psalm 27:1). Each child is recognized as a unique individual with many special talents and abilities. Phonemic awareness, fine and gross motor skills are introduced through a creative curriculum. Our center is licensed by the State of New York and is housed in a facility designed for the development growth of 3, 4 and 5 year olds. Large open spaces and varied centers encourage exploration and discovery. Our materials are educational, self-motivating, easily manipulated and fun to use. Our program is multi-centered and includes Pre- Science, Pre-Math, Pre-Reading, Arts and Crafts, Dramatic Play, Story Time, Gross and Fine Motor Development, Technology, and Music. The essence of our philosophy is the acceptance of the child as a unique individual with special talents and abilities and the acceptance of our responsibility as educators to enhance and nurture those emerging traits. We promote the development of the whole child - physical, emotional, social, and cognitive. We treasure all aspects of childhood. It is our firm belief that our responsibility is to make the first school experience a positive one, one that will lead to independence, fulfillment, and satisfaction throughout your child s life.
