Seven cards are from new families who joined our church. There were six cards from visiting families who noted that they do not attend regularly, but enjoy celebrating Mass and the friendly people at our church. We are so happy to see that more than 450 parishioners attended our celebration of the Mass last weekend. For the purpose of keeping accurate records of parishioners in our database, we request that each household fill out a card. You may drop the cards in the collection basket or mail it to the parish office. You may also sign up online or update your information by visiting our website, www.cathedralchapel.org. A MESSAGE FROM FR. TRUC It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things (1Cor. 13). Dear Parishioners and Visitors: Begin the New Year by Giving is the parish s annual invitation to all our parishioners, to make a financial commitment for 2013. Your responses last week were great since we received a number of new parishioners. I encourage both new and current parishioners to fill out the 2013 Offertory card; this will help us to keep the records in our database accurate. Your continuing support is essential to our efforts of evangelization and ministerial outreach. Please remember that my hope or goal for 2013 is 300 families using the envelopes and $22.00 per Sunday offering. I look forward to hearing your input and suggestions on finding ways of how to best improve our worship celebration, and renew our Catholic faith. During this Year of Faith, I urge you to find ways to develop a personal relationship with God; learn about our Catholic teachings of the pros and cons especially concerning morality. Protecting God s Children in the 21st Century through Learning from Past Mistakes In recent years, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles has transformed a new culture of prevention, protocol in reporting of allegations, and protection of God s children in the 21st century. For example, some of the necessary steps are as follows: 1. Promptly report abuse allegations to civil authorities, 2. Screen all those who supervise children, and 3. Train adults and children in the latest abuse prevention procedures. Cardinal Mahony, Archbishop Gomez, bishops, pastors, priests, and leaders in the archdiocese have apologized for the sad and shameful actions of some priests, as well as for our inadequate responses in assisting victims and in dealing with perpetrators The past cannot be changed, but we have learned from it (Statement from the Archdiocese). During the last two weeks and the next several months, pages of court documents were released or will be released concerning cases of priests accused or suspected of child sex abuse. Names of Cardinal Mahony, Bishop Curry, or priests in authority will appear in the press; through the various different media, as you read these reports or commentaries, each of us will form our own opinions and emotions. Please keep the following thoughts in your mind: The information in these cases is decades-old, and does not reflect the abuse reporting and prevention policies and procedures employed in all of our parishes and schools for the past 11 years (Statement from the Archdiocese). I include here is an excerpt from Bishop Curry s statement: I wish to acknowledge and apologize for those instances when I made decisions regarding the treatment and disposition of clergy accused of sexual abuse that in retrospect appear inadequate or mistaken. Most especially, I wish to express my sympathy to all the victims of sexual abuse by clergy. Like many others, I have come to a clearer understanding over the years of the causes and treatment of sexual abuse Please email me (frtruc@cathedralchapel.org) or call me at the parish office if you have any questions. Let us keep each other in prayers for strength and healing. Year of Faith Formation - Holy Land Sites - A 12 Week DVD Series Touching the Past and Inspiring the Future - Wednesday - 7PM in the church Please join me on Wednesdays to watch a 10 minute DVD series about the Temple of Jerusalem and other biblical sites to learn about the Holy Land and to enrich your understanding of the Bible. During this Year of Faith, I urge you to find ways to develop a personal relationship with God and to learn about our Catholic teachings of the pros and cons especially concerning morality. WORSHIP, LITURGY & FAITH AN ONGOING MISSION In his hometown synagogue, Jesus' neighbors are amazed by his words. Nevertheless, they remind each other, "Is this not Joseph's son?" Surely the people know who he is. The carpenter's son. The young man who had learned in this very synagogue. The boy down the street. Conflict arises as Jesus begins to define himself in a new way. When he compares himself to the ancient prophets Elijah and Elisha the tensions grow. The tensions multiply when Jesus begins to tell of a new mission for God's people: the good news of the scriptures is intended for all. In his famous passage from the First Letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul reminds us of the eternal nature of love. Love does not come to an end. In today's readings, we are reminded that, like love, Jesus' mission cannot be contained. Jesus slips through the crowd of persecutors and moves on to new challenges. We are called to this same perseverance in the name of love. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Readings (4th Sunday Ordinary): Jer 1:4 5, 17 19; Ps 71:1 6, 15, 17; 1 Cor 12:31 13:13 [13:4 13]; Lk 4:21 30 Treasures From Our Tradition Here I am, send me! Here I am Lord, Is it I Lord? I have heard you calling in the night. I will go Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart. The song of the angels, "Holy, Holy, Holy," resounds from our lips at every Mass. There was a widespread belief in the first religions of the world that God stirred creation into being by a word, a song, a musical note. Music and a sense of God's presence have always been inseparable. In the liturgy, your voice is invited into this song as the priest names the reasons for our praise. "Heaven and earth are full of your glory," and we are not passive onlookers, but participants in this glory. Catholic prayer no longer assigns this angelic hymn to a choir, but gives it to you to sing. Even if your voice is thought to be suitable only for a well-insulated shower stall, you are called into this song. We are born to sing--just listen to a baby testing the full range of newly-discovered vocal abilities. Soon we get shushed and hushed into quiet, and given lots of messages that our voices are unwanted, and that we need to raise our hands in order to be heard. All of that is overturned in liturgy, the place where God waits to hear us come alive in the song of all creation. In heaven, everyone's in the choir; why not start practicing now? James Field, J. S.
