All are welcome [you really don t have to be Catholic!]. EXPLORING THE GOSPEL FROM THE OTHER SIDE The people were filled with expectation, and all were asking in their hearts whether John might be the Christ. John answered them all, saying, "I am baptizing you with water, but one mightier than I is coming. I am not worthy to loosen the thongs of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire." After all the people had been baptized and Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, "You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased." (Lk 3:15-16,21-22) Today the Church plunges us into Jesus ministerial beginning: his baptism. Most of us (I, too, am a cradle Catholic) did not personally align ourselves with God at our baptism. We re not an altar call church; we don t wait until the person is of age before she/he is baptized. We want all of our family members to join the family ASAP after he/she is born. So, babies are dragged around to every family gathering of every type nearly from day one. And, probably most families baptize as soon as the family can be gathered! Therefore, unlike Jesus, for the baptized child baptism is not a memorable occasion. But, Jesus experienced (I m not going to say heard) the opening of heaven, the coming of the Holy Spirit, and God s own voice revealing to him his spiritual identity: You are my beloved son with whom I am well pleased. I hope that if you were baptized as an infant, somewhere along your life, you, too, had this epiphany this awakening to your relationship to the triune God: like Jesus, you felt the imbedding of the Holy Spirit in your personhood; like Jesus, you learned that you ARE THE SON/DAUGHTER OF GOD! I was in my mid-twenties when one Sunday I was at mass with my mother at Sts. Peter and Paul in Tulsa and she heard God s voice. The pastor, Fr. McCauley, stopped mother after mass and said, Alison, I have a favor to ask you. She replied (like a dutiful Catholic): Anything, Father. He said: I want you to be a Eucharistic Minister. Realizing there were no women doing that ministry at that time, mother said, Oh, I couldn t do that, Father. No one would receive Communion from me. Father said, Alison, you already told me you d do anything I need done. And if someone would not receive the Body of Christ from you, then they wouldn t receive from Jesus himself! My mother was the first woman to do that ministry at our parish. We are called into ministry by the voice of the pastor, at the invitation of another parishioner, at the recognition of a need, or by a personal epiphany. God needs all of us not just the ordained, or the nuns, or the professional ministers. GOD NEEDS ALL OF US! This gospel challenges you and me to tune in to God s voice as it might come to us through any number of channels. Doing the ministry won t be our challenge; our challenge will be not turning a deaf ear!
