FROM FR. JOE This weekend we celebrate Memorial Day. It has a thought provoking history. Formerly it was known as Decoration Day, held after the Civil War to honor both the Union and Confederate dead. It was actually inspired, some say, by the way the people of the Southern states honored their dead. Then, after World War I, it was extended to honor all men and women who died in all our wars. On Memorial weekend, we often think of those who died in combat, our soldiers. Something not often recognized are the civilian deaths in wars. The civilian deaths usually far outweigh the military dead. This is especially true in modern wars. In the original spirit of Memorial Day, a day to honor both our own fallen and those of our enemies, I ask that we honor and pray not only for our soldiers, but for the soldiers and many civilian who died in the countries against which we have fought. One only has to think of Vietnam to visualize the civilian suffering endured in war. Let us pray for a true reconciliation. And let s take time to visit our cemeteries where some of our men and women are buried. For their sake, let us work to end all war. Some of our most decorated, gifted soldiers, have expressed their disgust for war. Some have even called into question the validity of many of the wars we have fought. Perhaps the most powerful example is that of Major General Smedley Butler. He wrote a book shortly before World War II entitled, War is a Racket. And if you know anything about this man, he was a warrior s warrior. Being a true patriot at times calls us to speak out against War. May we never fall for the false narrative that such efforts are always naïve appeasement. To fight to avoid needless war is also the act of a patriot, and one of the best ways to honor our fallen soldiers. Major General Smedley Butler, the most highly decorated Marine in history at the time of his death, would back me up on that one. Lord Jesus, Prince of Peace, may your kingdom come. ~Fr. Joe ROSARY IN THE GARDEN Join us every Tuesday evening in our rosary garden behind the Cathedral Church. We begin at 6:30 pm from now through October 10th. (weather permitting) NO Rosary July 4th.
