THE GATHERING Confession and Forgiveness (Please stand as you are able) P: Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, who spoke light into creation, who calls us to listen and follow, who sends us to shine like stars. Let us come before God, confessing our sin with the assurance of God s grace and mercy. (Silence for reflection and self-examination) P: Holy and merciful God, C: We confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. P: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you that in the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven! C: Amen. 1

(Please be seated) Children s Sermon: Baptism Birthdays THE WORD Kids Word (11am) - Kids approx. ages 4-8 can go and hear the Word through story, crafts & games. Please meet in back of sanctuary. Children return after sermon. First Reading: Isaiah 43:1-7 1But now thus says the LORD, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. 2When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. 3For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. I give Egypt as your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba in exchange for you. 4Because you are precious in my sight, and honored, and I love you, I give people in return for you, nations in exchange for your life. 5Do not fear, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you; 6I will say to the north, Give them up, and to the south, Do not withhold; bring my sons from far away and my daughters from the end of the earth 7everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made. R: The Word of the Lord C: Thanks be to God. 5
Second Reading: Acts 8:14-17 14Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. 15 The two went down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit 16 (for as yet the Spirit had not come upon any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus). 17 Then Peter and John laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. R: The Word of the Lord C: Thanks be to God. Musical Meditation You are the Light arr: Mary McDonald (SLC Choir) Gospel Acclamation R: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the 3 rd Chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord Gospel: Luke 3:15-17, 21-22 15As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, 16 John answered all of them by saying, I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire. 21Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased. R: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. Affirmation of Baptism A: We have received an amazing gift in our baptism. Today, you are invited to affirm the gift you have received. P: I ask you to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the faith of the church, which is the faith into which we were baptized. Do you reject the evil in the world that is always at work to turn us away from God? C: We do! P: Do you believe in God the Father? C: I believe in God the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. P: Do you believe in Jesus? C: I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. P: Do you believe in the Holy Spirit? C: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen P: Thank you for affirming your faith today for grabbing hold of the gift you have been given. Now, may we all daily live out that gift as we connect with God and with each other. This is the year! A: Let your lights so shine before others, that they may see your good works, and give glory to your Father in heaven. C: We will let our lights shine! 8
