THIS MONTH May/June 2017 The Calvary United Methodist Church Newsletter 1415 Miller, Ann Arbor, MI 48103 (734) 769 0869 calvary1415@att.net http://a2calvary.org minister's message Living in Michigan, you can expect a drop in church attendance during the first few months of the year: the weather is cold, the roads are slippery, and it is always dark outside. When Sunday morning finally rolls around, I can certainly understand why some of Calvary s faithful might choose the comfort of their warm beds over the stiff, cold pew. While I enjoy worshiping in a fuller sanctuary, I can always count on someone s encouragement as he/she reminds me that attendance will pick up in the warmer months. The encouragement makes sense. The logic follows. In warmer months, the conditions are more conducive for people to attend church. For the most part, this seems to be true. A small uptick in attendance follows in the spring after the winter ends. However, there are also months in the summer where we, again, experience some very sparsely attended services. Humorously enough, the weather can be held responsible once more. How- ever, it has less to do with snow or ice and more to do with sunny skies or warm weather as people go on vacation and take advantage of the summer months. In this way, depending on the weather to bring in a larger crowd for church is not really reliable. Let us rely instead upon a different strategy. I want to take this time to challenge you to make a personal invitation to just one friend to attend an upcoming church event: Game Night, Calvary Spaghetti Dinner, and/or Sunday service. I understand not everyone will say yes to our invitation. Even so, if we all extend an invitation, a few people will invariably accept and we will have an opportunity to share our lives and God s love with a few more people. In this way, please consider taking on not only my challenge but obeying a command we know comes from our heavenly father. In this way, please consider taking on this challenge from me as we continue to obey God s call to love neighbors. As always, God bless and thank you for your faithfulness. In Christ, Andy

page 2 big week at calvary The first week of May begins a busy week at Calvary! On Wednesday May 3, we hold our monthly Game Night at 7 pm which is fun for all ages with games and free snacks! Join Calvary friends and visitors who want to meet YOU! Next is the Spaghetti Dinner which raises funds for Habitat for Humanity on Saturday, May 6 from 5-7 pm. We're inviting Peace Neighborhood families and Miller Manor residents to bring in special flyers for a free dinner as an outreach to our neighbors. Please come to enjoy a fabuous dinner served in style, to meet and talk to new folks, and to support the Habitat for Humanity Good News Houses! may is habitat month! Spring is gloriously and officially here so it's time to start thinking about Calvary's participation in the Good News House of Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley! We will work with the Good News group of churches to renovate houses at 1509 and 1513 Harvest Lane in Ypsilanti. Work on the two houses begins June 2 and goes through August. We need your participation for Calvary's work days on Saturday, June 17 and Friday, July 21. Can you wield a 2017 Homes BEFORE: paint brush, screwdriver, or hammer or help with lunch? A sign up is in the Narthex to participate and also please offer 1509 Harvest Lane your prayers for this summer's workers and the families who will move into the two houses that the Good News group will renovate. 1513 Harvest Lane THIS MONTH Calvary has pledged to raise $1,00 to support the project. We have a head start with funds raised at the Calvary Cooks Spaghetti Dinners! Each Sunday in May, we will receive our Clatter Collection to support the Good News Habitat House. You can make your major donation to support the Good News House at Habitat Sunday on May 7 or at on any Sunday in May. Make checks out to Calvary and write "Habitat" in the note section. More information about the Good News House group, the families etc. is available at http://goodnewshouse.org/ At Habitat Sunday on May 7, we will welcome speaker Maurice Stovall, a Habitat homeowner who leads the refrigerator program for Huron Valley Habitat for Humanity. He'll give us an overview of the homeownership program, community development and other programs. He has helped renovate over 35 homes and helped over 2,500 families receive a new refrigerator. He'll highlight the importance of volunteers in the Habitat mission. Following Habitat Sunday on May 7 we'll enjoy a potluck lunch.
