A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR On Easter Sunday, after we got Jesus out of the tomb, I went to Mom s house for dinner. Easter dinner is my favorite of the year better than Christmas or even Thanksgiving because we always have traditional eastern European food like sauerkraut, pierogi, and my favorite: fresh Polish sausage. Mom also makes ham, vegetables, bread, and a wonderful lamb cake. Needless to say, after Lent and the fast of the Paschal Triduum, I am pretty hungry on Easter Sunday. By the end of Easter Sunday, I was so stuffed I felt like I would never have to eat again. Of course, those leftovers from Easter Sunday made really good dinners for a few days that week. Even though I was so stuffed on Easter Sunday, I still had dinner every day of Easter Week because I got hungry again and I needed to eat. Certainly, this is obvious to you. No one eats dinner just once in their life. No matter how much one might overeat at a particular meal, one will again become hungry and eat. This is so obvious it is almost silly for me to mention it. But I mention it because people forget this simple principle when it comes to the Eucharist. This weekend we celebrated a very special day for our second grade children. They received their First Holy Communion. These children and their parents and teachers worked long and hard to prepare to receive Christ in the Eucharist, and we are very proud of them. But it is only their First Holy Communion. There might be fancy dresses and ties and shiny shoes and parties and gifts, but all those things do not make First Holy Communion the most important. They only make it first. Just as we must eat every day of our lives, so too must we be fed by the Eucharist every week. The most important Holy Communion is the next one. The Eucharist is God s greatest gift to us. Christ feeds us with his flesh and blood, and he gives himself to us continually in the Eucharist for our nourishment throughout life. We do not eat and drink only once in life. We need to eat and drink every day. And so with the Eucharist, we need to be fed by this divine meal every week throughout our entire lives. So perhaps First Holy Communion weekend is more important for us older folks. We have to be reminded that we share in a tremendous, divine gift: God nourishes us with his own flesh and blood throughout our lives. Our most important Holy Communion is our next. Congratulations to our First Communion Class. We look forward to sharing with you at the Table of the Lord today and always. Fr. Michael FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER May 2, 2010 Behold, God s dwelling is with the human race. Revelation 21:3 TRANSFORMATION When we clean, repair, or otherwise restore things in our possession, we often say good as new or just like new. This, according to the book of Revelation, is what happens to anything that is filled with the glory of Christ. When scripture uses the word new it doesn t merely mean a different one, a replacement (as our advertisements do), but it carries the sense of something being transformed so fully and completely that it is now almost unrecognizable. Our world is filled with tears, death, pain, thirst, darkness; but the new world the new heavens and new earth brought about by Christ s resurrection is filled with joy, everlasting life, glory, living water, and light. As Paul noted in his second letter to the church at Corinth, if we are in Christ, then we are a new creation. And disciples who are a new creation, who live in the new heaven and earth brought about by Christ, are also daily practitioners of a new commandment: to love one another with that transforming, renewing love that Christ bestowed on us.

FIRST COMMUNION RETREAT Second graders prepare for their First Communion with a morning of retreat. They heard the gospel story of the Multiplication of the Loaves, were instructed on the Real Presence and how to properly receive Eucharist; baked bread and made the memory plates. MAY CROWNING The parish will honor our Blessed Mother next Sunday, Mother s Day, during the 9:30 am Mass by crowning her Queen of the May. HAND CHIMES We have a Hand-Chime Ensemble that has been in existence for four years. They have really come a long way over that time. Now we have a few students graduating, and we are looking for new members for next year. We play one parish liturgy a month, Christmas family Mass, Easter Sunday morning, and some school Masses. We rehearse one day a week after school, which is Mondays from 2:40 to 3:30 pm. Our final rehearsal for this year will be on Monday, May 3rd. Come try playing the chimes with us at that rehearsal. If you have any questions, please call Lisa Barry at 450-0466. WOMEN S GUILD The Divine Infant Women s Guild would like to say Farewell and a big thank you to Sue Cerny for her leadership, hard work and commitment to the Guild in her role as President for the past four years. Sue has made it possible for the women of the parish to enjoy, learn and make new friends throughout her tenure, and also to benefit the church and school. She was a joy to work with and a pitch-in-toget-it-done person. Her commitment has strengthened the Guild for these past years and we thank her for her efforts. Because of her it has continued to grow and prosper. We say farewell, but not good-bye, as she will continue as a Guild member. Again, thanks for all you have done for the Guild and for the Parish.

ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO May 2010 Dear Friends in Christ, This month, we celebrate two significant events, one ancient, the other more recent in origin: the Feast of Pentecost and Mother s Day. On Mother s Day, we remember with gratitude those women who bring new life to the world and who are the hearts of our homes. On Pentecost, we recall and accept again the gift of the Holy Spirit into our hearts and to the whole world. At this time, I ask you to remember in your prayers and in your charity those who will benefit from Catholic Charities Mother s Day Appeal: the thousands of families and individuals throughout Cook and Lake counties who are suffering from the economic recession and who are turning to Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago, as to a loving mother, for hope and assistance. This is the only parish collection during the year for Catholic Charities. By working in partnership with numerous parishes and providing services that they cannot, Catholic Charities is able to assist more than a million of our neighbors in need each year. People of all faiths, families, children, seniors, the hungry and homeless, are helped through 159 different programs at 156 locations. Today, in addition to needing food, clothing, and utility assistance, thousands of families and individuals struggle to stay housed. Many parents, including low-income mothers who are heads of households, have lost their jobs and live in fear of losing their homes or apartments. Many grandparents have seen their retirement income and with it, their security diminish significantly. Simply remaining in the places they call home has become a major concern for low-income families and elders. Catholic Charities has developed an array of safe and affordable housing programs that honor and respect human dignity and preserve the sacred bonds of family. More than 1,500 independent elders with limited incomes live in Catholic Charities 17 senior residences. The St. Leo Residence for Veterans houses formerly homeless veterans as they build new lives and careers; frail seniors in need of supportive housing are cared for in a pleasant community atmosphere; homeless parents and children live temporarily in Catholic Charities shelters; and a recovery program for women reunites mothers and children. Last year, the Lake County Family Self-Sufficiency Program assisted 678 low-income single parents and children with maintaining their housing, while they worked toward jobs, education, and stability for their families. These are just a few examples of Catholic Charities fidelity to Christ s Gospel mandate (Matthew 25:34-45) to love and care for our neighbors. I pray that the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the example of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, inspire you and your families on Mother s Day and always. May God, who is never outdone in generosity, bless you for your support for the Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Sincerely yours in Christ, Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. Archbishop of Chicago

SCHOOL NEWS FOURTH GRADE CELEBRATES EARTH DAY What do you call a cow that works in a garden? Give up? Answer: A big lawn moo-er! Mrs. Jacklin s fourth grade class celebrated Earth Day with a fun-filled, fact-filled afternoon. Did you know? E-waste, electronic waste, is the fastest-growing type of trash. Every day Americans discard more than 384,000 cell phones, 114,000 computers, and 81,000 televisions. We pop open enough aluminum drink cans each year to stretch to the moon and back, nearly 14 times. We recycle less than half our empty cans. We recycle more than 70% of the paper used in offices and schools. Yet all the paper we don t recycle each year accounts for more than 29 million trees. Jack Lyons, Miranda Gutierrez, and Marco Navarro are studying how good green spaces are for the planet. They learned that grass filters harmful chemicals and minerals from water fun-off while providing a great amount of our supply of oxygen. On the computer, Heat Freak, Dr. Run Off, Carbon Creep, and Dust Demon try to keep Derek Salata from going green and saving the planet. Fourth graders worked together to clean up the school and parish grounds of litter. Labake Oyetayo, Bobby Grimes, and Joey Stiso are gaining information about going green. On average, each person in the United States throws away 4.5 pounds of trash each day. Counting all our garbage, that adds up to nearly 250 million tons of waste a year and only one-third of that gets recycled.

STATEMENT OF THE MOST REVEREND THOMAS JOHN PAPROCKI UPON HIS APPOINTMENT AS THE NINTH BISHOP OF SPRINGFIELD IN ILLINOIS April 20, 2010 President Abraham Lincoln has been a hero of mine since my first visit to Springfield when I was in eighth grade. In a speech given in Springfield on January 27, 1838, Abraham Lincoln said, We find ourselves under the government of a system of political institutions, conducting more essentially to the ends of civil and religious liberty, than any of which the history of former times tells us. We, when mounting the stage of existence, found ourselves the legal inheritors of these fundamental blessings. It is indeed a fundamental blessing which I am profoundly privileged to inherit as the new shepherd of the flock that comprises the Catholic community of central Illinois. I am deeply grateful for the confidence shown by our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, in appointing me to serve as the ninth Bishop of Springfield in Illinois. I look forward to working with the priests, deacons, men and women religious, the lay Christian faithful and all people of good will here in our State Capital to carry out the mission entrusted to us by Jesus Christ to proclaim the Gospel. I pledge to do my best with the help of God s grace to build on the fundamental blessings established through the dedicated ministry of the previous bishops of Springfield, especially my immediate predecessor, the Most Reverend George Lucas, now Archbishop of Omaha. I also wish to express my sincere appreciation to my fellow priests and bishops of the Archdiocese of Chicago with whom I have been fortunate to work for the past thirty-two years. Most of all, I thank His Eminence, Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., Archbishop of Chicago, for being a true mentor over the past thirteen years during which I was privileged to serve as his Chancellor, as a parish Pastor and as his Auxiliary Bishop. I am pleased that we will continue to be co-workers in the vineyard of the State of Illinois that comprises the Province of Chicago. May God who has begun his good work bring it to completion. WORKING TOGETHER WE ARE IMPROVING TELEVISION Want to be heard? To Complain? To get changes made? Want an effective voice for your complaints? 1.3 million people strong and growing!!! If you think that the television programs being fed into the pliable and impressionable minds of our easily influenced innocent children are partly responsible for some of the problems of today, then you are in good company. So do the 1.3 million members of Parents Television!! For more information, please call Don Eck at 630-267-7162. McCASKEY TO SPEAK Patrick McCaskey, grandson of the legendary George Papa Bear Halas, will speak about the importance of faith-based education at Divine Providence s McInerney Center, 2500 Mayfair Avenue, Westchester, at 7:00 pm on May 25th. Mr. McCaskey currently serves as a board member and Senior Director of Special Projects for the Chicago Bears football team. Additionally, Mr. McCaskey is the chairman of Sports Faith International and frequently writes on the topics of religion and athletics. He also is very active on the speakers circuit where he enjoys talking about his Catholic faith and the role he plays in his life as a Chicago Bear Executive. McCaskey s talk will conclude with a small reception. Parents of prospective and current students are encouraged to attend. Admission is free and open to all. Don t miss this wonderful opportunity. For information, please call 562-2258.

HAPPY SPRING! As you get your garden ready for the season, the landscape committee is doing the same to get the church and school ready. If you find that you have plants that are in need of dividing or transplanting, we would be happy to take them to use around the parish grounds. Any and all would be appreciated. Please feel free to contact Julie Klemp at 562-0309 or Genny Panek at 865-9977. Thank you! CELEBRATE MOTHER S DAY WITH CARDINAL GEORGE The Mother s Day Mass for Expectant Mothers is Sunday, May 9th, at 11:00 am at Holy Name Cathedral, 735 North State Street, Chicago. Cardinal George will give a special blessing to all mothers, including those awaiting the birth of a child, and their unborn children! All expectant mothers will receive a silk rose and St. Gerard prayer card and medal as a keepsake. St. Gerard is the patron saint of expectant mothers. For more information, please call 312 534-5355. MOTHER S DAY FLOWER SALE The Divine Infant Pro-Life Committee will sell flowers in the church vestibule after all the Masses next weekend, May 8-9. Again this year the proceeds from this sale will benefit WomanCare Services, the pregnancy care center located across the street from MacNeal Hospital on Oak Park Avenue in Berwyn, 795-6000. WomanCare recently allied itself with Aid for Women, a pregnancy center from Downtown Chicago. They are both going under the name Aid for Women. These two centers are life affirming pregnancy resource centers recognized as preferred providers of such services by the Respect Life Office of the Archdiocese of Chicago. They counsel women with unplanned pregnancies and offer them free pregnancy tests, ultrasound exams and a range of additional services. Help us support this life saving organization by buying flowers for the special woman in your life. Roses are $2.00 each; 6 for $10.00; 1 dozen for $20.00. Carnations are $1.00 each; 6 for $5.00; 1 dozen for $9.00. DRIVERS NEEDED Divine Infant Parish is in great need of people who can help get non-driving parishioners to Mass on the weekend. You can be scheduled for any Mass you attend, most likely once a month. Please call the rectory if you are able to help. COMMUNITY YOGA CLASS! WHAT IS THE ROMAN MISSAL Over the past several years, you have heard much through newspapers, blog postings, and Twitter about the forthcoming revised translation of the Roman Missal. You may be wondering, What is the Roman Missal, and how does this translation affect us? Take notice of the red book the priest uses most often during Mass. This book is called the Sacramentary, which together with the Lectionary for Mass make up the Roman Missal. The missal is the collection of prayers, chants, and instructions (rubrics) used to celebrate Mass. This includes prayers such as the Sign of the Cross and opening greeting; Opening Prayers; Gloria; Creed; Eucharistic Prayers; Holy, Holy, Holy; Memorial Acclamations; and the final blessing. The majority of the prayers we recite or sing at Mass are contained in this book and it is these prayers that are currently being retranslated from the original Latin into English. In the early Christian Church, many of the Mass prayers were memorized and handed down orally. Scribes eventually collected the prayers and recorded them in liber sacramentum (book of sacraments or sacramentaries). Other books were used for the scripture readings: Lectionaries and a Book of the Gospels (Evangeliary) for the scripture readings, and additional books for the chants and antiphons. Slight changes and additions developed as manuscripts were handed on and handscribed. Eventually the chants, scripture readings, prayer texts, and instructions were compiled into a single volume, the Missale Plenum (complete missal). When Johannes Gutenberg invented the movable printing press in 1470, this allowed the Mass texts to become standardized and published universally. In 1474, the first Missale Romanum (Roman Missal) was printed in Latin and the texts contained in this volume evolved over the five ensuing centuries. Because the amount of scripture proclaimed at Mass increased following the Second Vatican Council (1962 1965), the Missale Romanum (Roman Missal) was divided into two separate books: The Lectionary for Mass (four volumes of Sacred Scripture) and the Sacramentary (prayers, chants, and instructions [rubrics] for the celebration of the Mass). The Lectionary texts for the dioceses of the United States were revised in 1998 and are currently used in the liturgy. The texts that are found in the current Sacramentary have been retranslated and will eventually be used in English-speaking countries. With this translation, the name of the book will change from Sacramentary to Roman Missal, a translation of the Latin title, Missale Romanum. All of the prayers we say in English have corresponding Latin texts. After the Second Vatican Council, the Latin texts were translated into the vernacular, or common language, of particular regions. The first English translation of the Roman Missal was completed quickly in 1969. It aimed for a spirit of the texts rather than an exact literal translation of the Latin words. A second revision of these texts occurred in 1975. In 2001, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, the liturgical commission in Rome, issued a document outlining the methodology and process for translating liturgical texts into vernacular languages. This document, Liturgiam Authenticum, called for a more literal translation of the original Latin, and so a group of scholars, poets, and theologians convened and worked painstakingly on providing a third English translation. The U.S. Bishops recently approved this revised translation, which is currently pending final approval (recognito)from Rome. When the translation is used, you will notice slight changes in the prayers we hear and say at Mass. For example, we will soon respond, And with your spirit to The Lord be with you. Being faithful to the original Latin prayers will enhance the meaning of the texts. They will be more poetic; and there will be a more obvious connection to the scriptural roots of our prayers. There is an old axiom, lex orandi, lex credendi that is the law of prayer is the law of faith or that which we pray is that which we believe. This is why the prayers of the Church are so important and why the Church has initiated the process of revising the English translation. The words of our prayers are what we believe as a Church and form us as the body of Christ. For more information about the Roman Missal, please visit this Web site: www.revised Roman Missal.org.
