A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR I remember two things about my graduation from elementary school. First, I was in the very first class to graduate from Park Junior High in LaGrange Park. Second, I wore a beige leisure suit. Without even telling you what year it was, you can certainly guess the decade based on that one, unfortunate detail: beige leisure suit. But that is pretty much all I remember. Elementary school did not leave me with any lasting memories or enduring friendships. I have not gone to any reunions or stayed in touch with any classmates. When I graduated, I was happy to leave and to go on to the next phase in life. Maybe this has something to do with my lack of sentimental attachment to things, and maybe it has something to do with the school. Maybe Park Junior High just did not make much of any impression on me. This weekend we have a chance to see just what sort of an impression a school can make on its students, and we can see this by looking both to the past and the future. This weekend we celebrate two very important events. The first big event is our second All-Alumni Reunion on Saturday. For nigh on sixty years, thousands of students have passed through the halls of our school. Our school has educated the minds and formed the spirits of these young people, and this weekend they have returned in droves. We can look to our alumni and their many accomplishments and their desire to return to Divine Infant as a testimony to the great things our school and parish have done for them. Thank you, Alumni, for coming to our reunion. Thank you for all that your lives have become and for acknowledging and celebrating Divine Infant as an important part of your own life story. Thank you for helping to make our school the great place that it is! The second big event this weekend is the graduation of our class of 2010. They are our newest alumni, and we are very proud to bless them and send them on to high school. They are really just at the beginning of their journeys. Though eighth grade graduation may seem like a conclusion, it is really just the beginning. Class of 2010, look to all the alumni that have returned here this weekend. Once they were in your shoes, and I am sure that each one of them could tell you that the most important thing is not what you have just accomplished but rather what you will accomplish. Many of them have gone on from Divine Infant to do very impressive things. We know that you, too, will go on to do great things with your lives. We hope that our school has left a good and lasting impression on you. Always remember to call Divine Infant Jesus School your home. And no matter what you do in life, steer clear of those beige leisure suits! Fr. Michael CHRIST FORETOLD In Genesis, Melchizedek is described as a king who is also a priest. As this story is usually interpreted, Melchizedek s action of bringing out bread and wine and blessing it with praise to the Creator is a prophetic action. Seen as a prefigurement of the action of Jesus, he foretells to Abram the One who is to come, the Messiah. The psalm echoes this theme in the time of David the King, who praises and thanks God and proclaims the preexistence of the Christ, who is given princely power from the day of your birth, in holy splendor (Psalm 110:3). God has promised this to David and his descendants forever, and God will never go back on this promise. For many years now, we have relied on our retired priests to celebrate Mass and the sacraments in hundreds of parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago. Some retired priests are called upon to be temporary administrators of parishes and others fill in to allow pastors some needed time off. The Priests Retirement and Mutual Aid Association (PRMAA) cares for our retired priests. This year, we have seen the cost of healthcare, prescription drugs, and nursing home care increase. In addition, the priests pension fund remains seriously impacted by the economic downturn. This special collection will help us to continue to support our retired priests. You may be aware that the December collection for retired men and women Religious is designated to provide only for those in Religious Orders. Archdiocesan priests do not receive any funds from this collection. As the Year for Priests draws to a close, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our retired priests for their exemplary ministry. We are blessed to have more than one hundred retired priests over eighty years of age, which means that each one has served for more than fifty-five years. SCHOOL NEWS Seventh grade science students were given a challenge to create a paper tower using only two pieces of newspaper and a ruler to measure their progress. Within the class, two groups were able to create a tower taller than 40 inches! Group Pat (Louis Herman, Carl Robst, Patrick McGee and Conner Olen) was able to create a tower that was 44 inches! However, Group Kevin (Dan Orenlas, Luis Ornelas, Joe Genova and Kevin Jackson) was able to defeat the previous record with a tower that was 47 inches. The Kindergarteners are Lighting Up God s World with their Insect Unit. They are learning what an insect is and some of their names. They chose this theme for their Graduation on June 3rd and are making fireflies, dragonflies, caterpillars, ants, and ladybugs to decorate the stage. Mrs. Janney s Pre-Kindergarten class is learning about the Bible story Jonah and the Whale. Afterward, they made whales out of paper bags and are learning their numbers by sewing simple projects. Group Kevin watch to see if their tower will stand on its own. In Religion, third grade students studied the two great commandments, Love God with all your heart, with all your mind, and with all your soul. The other great commandment is Love your neighbor as yourself. After that, the students worked on memorizing the 10 Commandments that were presented to Moses. 2010 SCHOOL YEAR REGISTRATION CONTINUES Our school is part of the ministry of the Catholic Church and is an integral part of the mission of Divine Infant Jesus Parish. Developing the Faith through word and action is a critical part of the school curriculum. Our students take part in weekly liturgies, daily communal and classroom prayer, prayer services, sacramental preparations and various service projects as a means to enrich their Faith life. Pre-school and pre-kindergarten parents have the option of l/2 or full day programs for three or five days per week. Our full-day kindergarten program provides an excellent academic foundation for grades one through eight. The Faith-centered curriculum is aligned with the Illinois State Board of Education Standards. The curriculum also includes daily Religion instruction Art, Music, Physical Education and Computer classes. Extra-curricular activities include Student Government, Band and Chimes ensemble, Robotics Club, Chess Club, a before-and-after school program, Mural Club, an in-house Broadcasting Network and athletics. You were told that you had put on Christ. The sacraments of initiation baptism, confirmation and eucharist define and identity us. We become new creatures, new beings, new christs. So the Church is the Body of Christ, and we continually live this mystery in our celebration of the eucharist. The best way to celebrate the eucharist is to be intimately involved in it. Our culture tends to encourage us to be passive observers. We can watch anything we want on television or the computer without being personally involved in it. But church is different. In church we do liturgy, and liturgy is from the Greek meaning work of the people. We are not to be passive. Each and every one of us is called to be fully and actively involved in the liturgy. We would like to invite you to a fuller and more active participation in the liturgy and to be the Body of Christ in a special and more intimate way. We invite you to consider becoming an extraordinary minister of communion. In this liturgical ministry, you assist the priest in ministering the Body and Blood of Christ to the assembly during the communion rite. If you have received all three sacraments of initiation (baptism, confirmation, eucharist) and feel that the Holy Spirit is calling you to this ministry, we invite you to attend training and to become commissioned as a Eucharist Minister. Training will be held on Sunday, June 27, 2010 beginning at 10:00 am in the rectory. Those who are currently Eucharistic Ministers are also invited to attend. OUR SUNDAY OBLIGATION Maureen Kelly, ma Much obliged is an old fashioned phrase first noted in the Old Oxford English Dictionary in the sixteenth century. Over the centuries, the phrase has lost some of its richness. Originally, it meant to be bound to a person by ties of gratitude. Today, the phrase is more often used as an automatic response to someone who has performed a perfunctory service. Unfortunately, this practice does not convey the sense of truly being bound to each other by gratitude. What a loss! Be cause of that loss, many people understand the word obligation as a burden rather than a commitment and duty that flows from a relationship. Obligation is a form of indebtedness that comes from within the heart of a relationship. Think of the obligations that make for a rich family life. A parent does not say, I wonder if I have to feed my children this week? Husbands and wives carry out a myriad of obligatory tasks in service to each other during the course of a week and never ask, Do I have to? In loving relationships, we are grateful for the gift of each other and we express that gratitude by doing right actions because we want to do so. Obligatory behaviors grow out of communication, intimacy, and personal and communal relationships. These examples can help us reflect on our obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and on holy days of obligation and rest from servile labor (Catechism of the Catholic Church, #2041). The heart of Sunday obligation is gratitude. The word Eucharist means to give thanks. We gather each week because we are much obliged to God for everything. This obligation is not an automatic response to someone who has performed a perfunctory service. We come together to give thanks to God, our Father who is the source of all life and creation, and to Jesus, God s Son who gave us eternal life through his death on the Cross that is made present in every Mass as we participate again in Christ s death and Resurrection through the Eucharist. Each time we attend Mass, we bring our lives, our very selves, to the Eucharist. We gather together as a community, grateful to have each other as fellow pilgrims in faith and grateful to be nourished by the body and blood of Christ. Just as the relationships and obligations in families are nurtured and strengthened by intimacy and communion, so too does our participation in the Eucharist nurture and strengthen our relationship with the Trinity. Food nourishes our body in the same way that our participation in Holy Communion nourishes our spirit and unites us together as individuals and as a community in Christ. Acting on our Sunday obligation of being much obliged gives us reason to be more obliged in the most authentic sense of obligation. Questions for Reflection In what ways do I live out my Sunday obligation? What impact does my participation in the Eucharist have on my daily life? How can I explain Sunday obligation to someone who asks, Do you have to go to Mass every Sunday? Actions to Ta ke Volunteer to become part of one of the liturgical committees or groups of liturgical ministers in your parish. Think about what you can do to improve your experience of Sunday worship. Talk with your family or another faith-sharing group about ways to make Sunday a day of worship. By Archdiocesan regulation and parish policy, parents are required to attend a Baptismal Preparation session before the Baptism of their child. These sessions will usually be held on the third Wednesday evening of the month. Call the secretary at the rectory (865-8071) to register for the session and schedule the Baptism. D.I.V.M. SERVICES: Communion to the sick, food shopping, necessary transportation, emergency meals, transportation to Mass. Resource information also available. If you need help from any of these services, please let us know as much in advance as possible so the chairpersons can make arrangements and the volunteers arrange their schedules. WEDDINGS: Couples should contact the rectory and speak to a priest shortly after the engagement, but no less than four months before the desired wedding day. No date should be set (especially in reserving a hall) for your wedding until you have spoken to a priest. In this way, you will not be disappointed if the church has been previously reserved for another ceremony.
