Bible Doctrines For Today
Why should we study Bible Doctrines? Doctrine means teaching. Studying Doctrine helps us understand what the Bible teaches and why we believe what we believe. It is also important to know what we should not believe.

Main Themes for This Week: Who wrote the Bible? How was the Bible written? Is there proof of inspiration? What is canonicity? How should we study and interpret the Bible?
Who wrote the Bible? What is the plenary view of inspiration?
2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NKJV) 16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Plenary Verbal Inspiration Means All Scripture (every word) is God-Breathed. It means that God inspired the men who actually penned the Bible. He inspired the exact words on the pages by working through man. Without this view, how can their be holiness in scripture?
Examples 2 Samuel 23:2 (NKJV) 2 The Spirit of the LORD spoke by me, And His word was on my tongue. 1 Corinthians 2:13 (NKJV) 13 These things we also speak, not in words which man s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
Examples Acts 1:16 (NKJV) 16 Men and brethren, this Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus;
Examples Proverbs 30:5-6 (NKJV) 5 Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him. 6 Do not add to His words, Lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar. Matthew 4:4(NKJV) 4 But He answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.
Does God s word change?
Psalm 119:89; 160 (NKJV) 89 Forever, O LORD, Your word is settled in heaven. 160 The entirety of Your word is truth, And every one of Your righteous judgments endures forever. 1 Peter 1:25(NKJV) 25 But the word of the LORD endures forever. Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you.
Is there proof of divine inspiration? 1. Prophecy 2. Scientific 3. Historic 4. Experiential
Proof from Prophecy: Many fulfilled prophecies about the Jesus. The destruction of the temple (Matt. 24:2) Jesus spoke of this around AD 30-33, the actual event happened in AD 70 with Titus besieged Jerusalem for 143 days. Josephus (non-christian) stated that the temple and city was leveled by fire to the point where no one could tell it had ever been inhabited.
Proof from Prophecy: Jesus Predicted Peter s Death (John 21:18-19) And many more
Proof from Science: Universe created from nothing (Heb. 11:3) Water Cycle (Psalm 135:7) Earth s Spherical Shape (Isaiah 40:22) Rotation of the Earth (Job 38:13-14) Suspension of Earth in Space (Job 26:7) Innumerable Stars (Jer. 33:22)
Proof from Science: Atmospheric Weight (Job 28:35) Trajectory of Stars (Judges 5:20) Life-Giving Power of Blood (Lev. 17:11) Slowing of Universe Expanse (Psalm 102:25-26) Differing Magnitudes of Stars (1 Cor. 5:41) Man as Dust Chemically (Psalm 103:14)
Proof from History: Found of Biblical Hittites in 1906. The Bible recorded them thousands of years prior. (Exo: 33:22; Deut. 7:1; 20:17; Josh. 3:10; 24:11) Belshazzar s Reign. Skeptics did not believe Belshazzar was ever King, but archeological discoveries showed his father Nabonidus (King) to have bestowed charge of the kingdom to Belshazzar, thus making Daniel, the third in command. (Dan. 5:16, 29)
Proof from History: Writing during the time of Moses. In 1948 it was determined that writing existed well before the time of Moses. A fact that most skeptics used to discredit the Torah as legitimately authored by him. Evidence of Joseph via archeological discoveries in Egypt. Evidence of two rapidly burned cities exactly where the Bible placed Sodom and Gomorrah.
Proof from Experience: What about you? Has the Bible influenced your life to the point to where you made a decision to live by it based upon the truths found in it?
Biblical Canon? Canon = measuring rod How to determine why books were placed in the Bible?
Canonicity: Must be determined by scriptural and historic referencing techniques. Did Christ quote it? Did Christ reference it? Did the followers of Christ quote or reference it? Did those that Christ quoted or reference, quote or reference it? Was it received, used, and preserved by God s people over time?
For Example: Luke 24:44 (NKJV) 44 Then He said to them, These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.
How Should We Study and Interpret? 2 Timothy 2:15 (NKJV) 15 Be diligent (study) to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
Principles of Interpretation: Literal Principle With consideration for figurative language when rendered. Historical Principle Contextual Principle Grammatical Principle Synthetical Principle Practical Principle
