2016 Handbook

Welcome! Welcome to Christ Church Cathedral. Wherever you are in your journey of faith, there is a place for you at the Little Church on the Circle. Since 1837 we have been a presence in Indianapolis, striving to welcome all, serve all, and widen the circle of God s embrace. Wherever you are in your journey of faith, there is a place for you at the Little Church on the Circle. We welcome all, serve all, and widen the circle of God s embrace. At our core, we are a diverse community of Christians united by our prayers and our commitment to serve the world in Christ s name. We hope that you will use the resources outlined in this handbook to better connect to Christ Church Cathedral. If you have questions or ideas we are always listening. The Very Rev. Stephen Carlsen Dean and Rector Membership Information You are welcome to holy worship at Christ Church Cathedral, no matter who you are or where you are coming from. The table is open to all. If you would like more information about joining Christ Church Cathedral please contact the Dean and Rector at StephenC@cccindy.org or call (317) 636-4577 ext. 101. The sacrament of Holy Baptism, makes you a member of the Universal Christian Church. The Episcopal Church recognizes all persons who have been baptized with water in the name of the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) as Christian. If you were baptized in an Episcopal congregation then, in addition to becoming a member of the Universal Church, you were enrolled as a member of that particular congregation and also became an Episcopalian. All baptized members are encouraged to receive the sacrament of Confirmation, either when they reach maturity or in connection with baptism if they are baptized as adults. In confirmation we express a mature commitment to Christ and receive strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands by a bishop. After confirmation, a person is a confirmed communicant. If you were baptized and confirmed in another church you may be Received by a bishop of The Episcopal Church. This makes you a confirmed member of The Episcopal Church. Some who have experienced a renewal of faith or responding to pastoral needs may also reaffirm their baptismal vows. Those who are 16 years of age and older, are confirmed, attend worship and contribute to the work of the church are Communicants in Good Standing, and may vote for the Vestry, run for the Vestry and represent the congregation in the diocese.

Sunday Worship 8 a.m. : A reflective service of Holy Scripture and Holy Communion. While there is no music and the service is shorter, the welcome is warm. Before this service, there is an opportunity to serve homeless persons who are welcomed into our Parish Hall for food and fellowship. 10 a.m. We reflect on Holy Scripture and celebrate Holy Communion, reverent and formal but never stuffy or stiff. You may be inspired, comforted or challenged by the sermon, but you are free to respond to it as your conscious calls. This is a choral service with lots of singing by our choirs and by the congregation. All who are seeing Christ are welcome to communion. Nursery care [linked] is also available. Education for all follows September to May, with coffee and refreshments on the lawn in the summer. 1 p.m. La Santa Eucharistía We are one congregation worshiping in two languages. The same service as 10 o clock but in Spanish. The music provided by the Coro Hispano and guitarists is joyful and lively. Even if you don t speak Spanish very well, you will be welcomed warmly. The first Sunday of each month there is a fiesta afterward, best Latino food in Indy! Other Ways to Worship with Us Weekdays, Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m., brief service of psalms and prayer 12:05 p.m., communion over your lunchhour 5:15 p.m.,, psalms, lessons and prayers Evensong, Thursdays, 5:15 p.m., September to May This is one of our most beautiful services, set to music sung by our choirs.
