WE ARE GLAD YOU ARE HERE! We welcome all people to join us in worship and fellowship. Children are welcome in worship, we also have nursery care during our worship service. Please ask an usher to direct you. Please join us after the service in the Fireside Room for refreshments and time to visit. WORSHIP GUIDE Our worship is participatory. This guide will help you. The text that follows is called liturgy. Some parts are spoken or sung by worship leaders. Other parts are spoken or sung by the whole assembly. The parts spoken or sung by the whole assembly are identified with bold text. We will also sing some songs (or hymns). These songs are identified with a title and a song number. These songs may be found in one of three books or printed in this bulletin. These books are identified as follows: Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW) the red book With One Voice (WOV) the blue book Worship and Praise (WP) the purple book Other instructions (when to stand) are printed in italic text or will be provided by a worship lead. 1

TODAY S WORSHIP We are in the middle of the season of Pentecost. During this time the texts we hear each Sunday are focused on Jesus actions concerning the kingdom of God. Today the texts come from Jeremiah and the Gospel according to Matthew. From Jeremiah, we hear the prophet pouring out his frustration to God and God s response. Matthew tells us that after making his great confession, Peter failed to understand what Jesus as Messiah would experience. 2

HOLY COMMUNION SETTING FOUR GATHERING PRELUDE Before the prelude, speak to one other. During the prelude, speak to God. During the service, listen for God to speak to you. During the week, let God speak through you. The Invitation of the Bell Announcements: Confession and Forgiveness All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. P: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Amen. Silence is kept for reflection and self-examination. P: Gracious God, C: have mercy on us. We confess that we have turned from you and given ourselves into the power of sin. We are truly sorry and humbly repent. In your compassion forgive us our sins, known and unknown, things we have done and things we have failed to do. Turn us again to you, and uphold us by your Spirit, so that we may live and serve you in newness of life through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen P: God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved. 3

In the name of Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. Almighty God strengthen you with power through the Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts through faith. C: Amen. Gathering Song: For the Beauty of the Earth ELW 879 Greeting P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you. Humble us by his example, point us to the path of obedience, and give us strength to follow your commands, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. (please be seated) Time with the Kid s WORD Pastor Peggy First Reading: Jeremiah 15:15-21 AM: 15 O LORD, you know; remember me and visit me, and bring down retribution for me on my persecutors. In your forbearance do not take me away; know that on your account I suffer insult. 16 Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart; for I am called by your name, O LORD, God of hosts. 17 I did not sit in the company of merrymakers, nor did I rejoice; under the weight of your hand I sat alone, for you had filled me with indignation. 18 Why is my pain unceasing, my wound incurable, 5

refusing to be healed? Truly, you are to me like a deceitful brook, like waters that fail. 19 Therefore thus says the LORD: If you turn back, I will take you back, and you shall stand before me. If you utter what is precious, and not what is worthless, you shall serve as my mouth. It is they who will turn to you, not you who will turn to them. 20 And I will make you to this people a fortified wall of bronze; they will fight against you, but they shall not prevail over you, for I am with you to save you and deliver you, says the LORD. 21 I will deliver you out of the hand of the wicked, and redeem you from the grasp of the ruthless. AM: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God Psalm Reading Psalm 26:1-8 (read responsively) AM: 1 Give judgment for me, O LORD, for I have lived with integrity; I have trusted in the LORD and have not faltered. C: 2 Test me, O LORD, and try me; examine my heart and my mind. AM: 3 For your steadfast love is before my eyes; I have walked faithfully with you. C: 4 I have not sat with the worthless, nor do I consort with the deceitful. 6

AM: 5 I have hated the company of evildoers; I will not sit down with the wicked. C: 6 I will wash my hands in innocence, O LORD, that I may go in procession round your altar, AM: 7 singing aloud a song of thanksgiving and recounting all your wonderful deeds. C: 8 LORD, I love the house in which you dwell and the place where your glory abides. Gospel Acclamation (please stand as you are able) Augsburg Fortress Publishers. All rights reserved. Reprinted under OneLicense.net A-726427. Gospel Reading: Matthew 16:21-28 P: 21 From that time on, [after Peter confessed that Jesus was the Messiah,] Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and undergo great suffering at the hands of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. 22 And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, God forbid it, Lord! This must never happen to you. 23 But he turned and said to Peter, Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; for you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things. 24 Then Jesus told his disciples, If any want to become my followers, let them deny 7

themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 25 For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit them if they gain the whole world but forfeit their life? Or what will they give in return for their life? 27 For the Son of Man is to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay everyone for what has been done. 28 Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom. C: Praise to you, O Christ (please be seated) Sermon: (Usher will come by and pick up your Prayer cards) Pastor Peggy Hymn of the Day: Will You Come and Follow Me ELW 798 Apostles Creed: (please stand as you are able) AM: Please join me in confessing our faith C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Prayers of Intercession AM: Open to the gifts of the Holy Spirit, we pray for the church, the world, and all of God s creation. A brief silence. 8

The National Hurricane Center called the storm's effects "life-threatening, devastating and catastrophic" and predicted long periods of rain and flooding, along with massive power outages. While many have evacuated, significant damage is still expected, and thousands of people may be housed in shelters for extended periods of time. We have an opportunity to accompany our neighbors during and after this disaster, in Jesus Christ's name. 15
