SAINT BASIL the GREAT СВ. ВАСИЛІЯ ВЕЛИКОГО Ukrainian Catholic Parish Парафія УГКЦ 202 HARCOURT STREET, WINNIPEG, MB R3J 3H3 Parish Office: 204-837-4180 Parish Hall: 204-889-9057 Parish Office Email Address: parish@saintbasilwpg.ca Rev. Fr. Ihor Shved о. Ігор Швед Phones: Cell: 431-996-2343 Home; 204-889-2083 Email Address Stbasilpriest@gmail.com Dear sisters and brothers! Christmas Eve will come in one week Why does everybody love Christmas? In their pastoral message the USA Ukrainian Catholic hierarchy noticed: We would venture to say that Christmas, somehow in a mysterious, incomprehensible way, hands down to us the distant, gentle taste of Heaven. But we live in a time when Christmas is undergoing more and more secularization. So as Christians, we are called to share the true meaning of Christmas. Of course, we do by going to the church. But the theme of Jesus' birth is to be present everywhere. First of all in our homes The preparation of the twelve dishes should be combined with stories for children and grandchildren of the history of Christmas and the meaning of the celebration. Tell them about the traditions of celebrating Ukrainian Christmas. SUNDAY LITURGY 10:00 a.m. (Rosary at 9:30 am) Office Hours (Mon-Wed-Fri) 10:00 am 1:00 pm CONFESSIONS Before Divine Liturgies BAPTISIMS By appointment FUNERALS By arrangement MARRIAGES By appointment at least six months in advance WEBSITE: www.saintbasilwpg.ca PARISH OFFICE EMAIL ADDRESS: parish@saintbasilwpg.ca BULLETIN SUBMISSIONS: bulletin@saintbasilwpg.ca Before the Supper, the whole family prays together. Everyone can begin with a thanksgiving prayer, and then jointly pray Our Father. It is also important to remember the dead in our prayer. You can finish the prayer with the Christmas Tropar: Your Nativity, O Christ our God, * made the light of knowledge dawn on the world: * through it, those who worshipped the stars were taught by a star * to worship You, the Sun of Righteousness, * and to know You, the Dawn from on the high. ** Glory to You, O Lord, or a carol «Бог предвічний».
After the prayer, we begins with sharing of the prosphora - holy bread which we receive from the church. Prosphora is a small loaf of leavened bread that is used during Communion in our Ukrainian Catholic Church. The head of the household offers everyone a piece of prosphora greeting each with «Христос рождається!» Christ is Born! as we reply «Славімо його!» Glorify Him! Prosphora is a main symbol of Jesus presence in our midst. Jesus named himself as the Bread of Life. It is interesting to note that Bethlehem - the birthplace of Jesus is called the House of bread hence - Bread of Life. Bread is one of life s most common things and God wanted His Son available to all. If this is a new tradition for your family, feel free to begin it. Blessed prosphora is available at the church today on Sunday Dec. 17 until Sunday Dec. 24. Keep frozen till ready to use. A donation for the poor can be given. Thank you to those who helped with the making of proshora! My family and I wish you a blessed peaceful Christmas preparation! Fr. Renewal Committee: The Manitoba Legislature adopted Bill 34 granting conscience protection to Healthcare Professionals refusing to take part in medical assistance dying. After many delays and with only 13 minutes left before the deadline, Bill 34 came to a vote and passed with unanimous consent. Kevin Goertzen (Minister of Justice) said he received 14,000 letters, asking for protection for healthcare workers in Manitoba. The campaign was well organized by the Coalition for Healthcare and Conscience and Dr. Larry Worthen, executive director of the Christian Medical and Dental Society (CMDS). We thank all who took the time and effort to call or write their MLA s, expressing their concern. The Next Adult Catechism Class will be held Tuesday Dec.19/17 7PM. Please plan to attend a great way to prepare spiritually for Christmas.
Operation Christmas Child Many thanks to parishioners for your donations of items and cash towards this year s Christmas Shoebox campaign. We assembled 9 boxes bound for children in Ukraine, filled with thoughtful gifts and a message of love from our parish. Thank you to our parish UCWL for continuing to donate the cost of shipping and support of religious programming that accompanies each gift box. Winter Clothing Drive Many thanks to parishioners for your generous donations. Last week, we delivered 8 bags of clothes, jackets, mitts, hats and boots to Siloam Mission in their new location on Stanley Street. This week, we will be collecting for the Main Street Project. The need there is for blankets, adult jackets and boots, mostly for men. We will collect clothing throughout the winter months for these two nonprofit safe places downtown, so please continue to leave your donations at the back of the church in the boxes labelled "Winter Clothing Collection". Remember to let your children be involved in the collecting of donated items from home, as this is an important lesson in giving to those less fortunate. Thank you and bless you for your generosity.
