call to worship The Scriptural call to worship at the beginning of our service is a reminder that, as we gather, it is God who initiates and reveals Himself to us through His Word, and we respond to Him. Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and how inscrutable His ways! For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been His counselor? Or who has given a gift to Him that He might be repaid? For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be glory forever. Amen. Romans 11:33-36 corporate confession During this time we acknowledge that we have sinned against a holy God, and we have the assurance that, because of Christ, we have been forgiven and are blessed recipients of God s mercy, grace and love. Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was pierced for our transgressions; He was crushed for our iniquities; upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with His wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned-every one-to his own way; and the Lord has laid upon Him the iniquity of us all. Isaiah 53:4-6 offering Giving is an act of worship in which we give generously of our substance to further the mission of the church and to bring glory to God. 3

Thanksgiving Every Christian should be thankful. When one considers all that God has done for us through Christ, no other attitude is appropriate. Unthankfulness is a sin and is not an option for those who have been forgiven of their sins, adopted into the family of God, united with Christ as an heir with him, and indwelled by the Spirit of God to guide and comfort us. Writing to the church in Colossae, the apostle Paul reminds them of their duty as Christians to be marked by thankfulness. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. Our worship is always a response to what God has done through Christ, and He has done more than we could ever ask or think. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him (Colossians 3:15-17.) Paul writes, not of a glib or naïve thankfulness, but a settled attitude of the heart that remains unchanged in all circumstances. As Christians, thankfulness becomes the continual thread woven through every experience in our lives. When we endure hardships and suffering, we do so with thankful hearts, trusting that God is loving and faithful and that He is working all things for His glory and our good. We become grateful for the good but often overlooked graces in our lives like food to eat and homes in which to live. When we sing together in church, we sing with thankful hearts. Our worship is always a response to what God has done through Christ, and He has done more than we could ever ask or think. As we sing together in worship, the important thing is not whether we can sing well, but whether we have a reason to sing at all. And every Christian has a reason to sing with thankfulness to the Lord. Paul closes this passage with a statement regarding all of our activity. Whatever you do, he writes, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. There are no loopholes. There are no exceptions. Let s make sure that every word, every action, every thought, is one that is honoring to the Lord and one for which we can give thanks to God. John Stegemerten Worship Pastor, Harris Campus (Main) 4

the new city catechism The New City Catechism is a modern-day resource aimed at helping children and adults alike learn the core doctrines of the Christian faith via 52 questions and answers. Learn more at NewCityCatechism.com. Part 3: Spirit, Restoration, Growing in Grace QUESTION 47 Does The Lord s Supper add anything to Christ s atoning work? No, Christ died once for all. The Lord s Supper is a covenant meal celebrating Christ s atoning work; as it is also a means of strengthening our faith as we look to Him, and a foretaste of the future feast. But those who take part with unrepentant hearts eat and drink judgment on themselves. For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God... 1 Peter 3:18 PRAYER Conqueror of Death, we celebrate your finished work when we take The Lord s Supper. May our eating be a confession of faith, that though we are unworthy, we have been joined together with the worthiness of Christ. May we come to your table with repentant hearts, putting away pride and self-sufficiency, enjoying the free grace you offer to us. Amen. 5
