Spreading A Love for God and His Glory January 13, 2019 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 1:7

Our worship is a response to God s initiative. The pattern of our worship reflects the gospel. WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS *CALL TO WORSHIP: Leader: Sing to him; sing praises to him; tell of all his wondrous works! Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice! *CROWN HIM WITH MANY CROWNS - Hymn #295 Crown Him with many crowns, the Lamb upon His throne Hark how the heavenly anthem drowns all music but its own Awake my soul and sing of Him who died for thee And hail Him as thy matchless King through all eternity Crown Him the Lord of love behold His hands and side Rich wounds yet visible above in beauty glorified No angel in the sky can fully bear that sight But downward bends his burning eye at mysteries so bright Crown Him the Lord of peace whose power a sceptre sways From pole to pole, that wars may cease, absorbed in prayer and praise his reign shall know no end and round His pierced feet fair flowers of paradise extend their fragrance ever sweet Crown Him the Lord of years the Potentate of time Creator of the rolling spheres ineffably sublime All hail! Redeemer hail! for Thou hast died for me Thy praise shall never, never fail throughout eternity - 2 -

*ONLY A HOLY GOD Who else commands all the hosts of heaven Who else could make every king bow down Who else can whisper and darkness trembles Only a Holy God What other beauty demands such praises What other splendour outshines the sun What other majesty rules with justice Only a Holy God (Chorus) Come and behold Him, the One and the Only Cry out sing holy, forever a Holy God, come and worship the Holy God *PRAYER OF PRAISE What other glory consumes like fire What other power can raise the dead What other name remains undefeated Only a Holy God (Chorus) Who else could rescue me from my failing Who else would offer His only Son Who else invites me to call Him Father Only a Holy God, only my Holy God (Chorus 2x) God Calls Us The Lord summons his people to worship and we respond in obedience. The Lord s call is a call to action. We gather, praise, adore, give thanks, etc. The Call to Worship is a joyful summons and a clear reminder that worship is our coming into God s presence by his command, and not our command that He come into our presence. - 3 - *Indicates when to stand. All Music Copied Under CCLI License #34680

*HOUSE OF GOD FOREVER (PSALM 23) God is my shepherd, I won't be wanting, I won't be wanting He makes me rest, in fields of green, with quiet streams Even though I walk, through the valley, of death and dying I will not fear, cause you are with me, you are with me Your shepherd's staff comforts me, you are my feast In the presence of enemies Surely goodness will follow me, follow me In the house of God forever (Repeat All) - 4 -

COMMON CONFESSION OF SIN SCRIPTURE OF EXHORTATION: 2 John 1:6, 8-9 And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments Watch yourselves, so that you may not lose what we have worked for, but may win a full reward. Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. All: Our soul is like a house, small for you to enter, but we pray that you will enlarge it. It is in ruins, but we ask you to remake it. It contains much that you will not be pleased to see; this we know and do not hide. But to whom can we cry except to you? Forgive us, O Lord. Cleanse us from our sins, O Lord, and our secret sins. What wretches we are! In your mercy, Lord our God, tell us what you are to us. Say to my soul, I am your salvation. Come, O Lord, and stir our hearts. Call us back to yourself. Kindle your fire in us and carry us away. Be our fire and our sweetness. Let us love you and hasten to your side. (Adapted from St. Augustine s Confessions) SILENT CONFESSION OF SIN DECLARATION OF GRACE: Colossians 1:13-14 God has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. God Cleanses Us The biblical response to God s call to be in his presence is confessing our sins. We humble ourselves when we approach our God. This is a corporate prayer of all God s people. It is a great privilege of the gospel that we can stand forgiven before the Lord of glory. - 5 -

*WHEN I SURVEY THE WONDROUS CROSS - Hymn #252 When I survey the wondrous cross On which the Prince of glory died My richest gain I count but loss And pour contempt on all my pride. Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast Save in the death of Christ my God! All the vain things that charm me most I sacrifice them to His blood. See from His head, His hands, His feet, Sorrow and love flow mingled down! Did e er such love and sorrow meet, Or thorns compose so rich a crown? Were the whole realm of nature mine That were an offering far too small; Love so amazing, so divine Demands my soul, my life, my all. - 6 -

OFFERTORY & RESPONSE Reminder: please sign and pass the Attendance Register down the pew. 11 a.m. Service: Children ages 4-6 excused for Children s Church (downstairs in the Corner Classroom) THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven Hallowed be thy name Thy kingdom come, thy will be done On earth as it is in heaven Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive our sins As we forgive those who have sinned against us Offering We give back to God a portion of what he has given us to use to declare that he is Lord of all. (This is part of our service as a church family, and visitors should not feel obligated to participate.) And lead us not into temptation, deliver us from evil For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory forever. Amen, amen (Repeat All) And lead us not into temptation, deliver us from evil For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory forever. Amen, amen, amen - 7 -

Romans: Coming Under Grace Pastor Lloyd Pierson, Ph.D. Greetings from Paul - Romans 1:1-7 (ESV) 1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, 2 which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, 3 concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh 4 and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, 5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, 6 including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ, 7 To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I. The Church at Rome Sermon Outline - 8 -

Sermon Outline, continued II., Paul s Desire to Come to Rome III. Jesus is Lord in Rome God Consecrates Us Consecrate means to make holy, to set apart. The Word of God does that for the lives of believers. Through the sermon, confessions of faith, and the offering we are sanctified for service to our Lord to joyfully offer up our lives to him. Sermon Questions 1. What two reasons does Paul give for writing this letter to the Romans? Why is it important that we remember this as we go through his letter? 2. How does the theologically rich teaching that Paul brings forward in Romans help produce churches that have great missionary zeal? 3. How does the theologically rich teaching that Paul brings forward in Romans help produce churches that love unity? 4. What does it mean that the gospel cannot be understood by the New Testament alone, but needs the Old Testament as well? 5. To speak of Jesus as Lord in Rome is quite subversive. How does the gospel confront the powers of the world in the strength of weakness? Why do we struggle so much with leading with weakness rather than strength? - 9 -

God Communes with Us The Lord strengthens and nourishes our faith through a sacramental meal. Through Jesus, communion with God has been reestablished. The covenant has been renewed. The Lord s Supper is the gospel made visible for us and we share in it as the full community of God s people. *ALL I HAVE IS CHRIST I once was lost in darkest night yet thought I knew the way The sin that promised joy and life had led me to the grave I had no hope that You would own a rebel to Your will And if You had not loved me first I would refuse You still But as I ran my hell-bound race indifferent to the cost You looked upon my helpless state and led me to the cross And I beheld God s love displayed You suffered in my place You bore the wrath reserved for me now all I know is grace (Chorus) Hallelujah! All I have is Christ! Hallelujah! Jesus is my life! Hallelujah! All I have is Christ! Hallelujah! Jesus is my life! Now, Lord, I would be Yours alone and live so all might see The strength to follow Your commands could never come from me O Father, use my ransomed life in any way You choose And let my song forever be my only boast is You (Chorus) At Faith Covenant, the Lord s Supper is observed each Lord s Day as the climax of our worship service. We invite to the Lord s Table all those who are baptized disciples of Jesus Christ, under the authority of Christ and His body, the Church. By eating the bread and drinking the cup with us as a visitor, you are acknowledging to our church that you are in covenant with God. You also acknowledge that you are a sinner, without hope except in the sovereign mercy of God, and that you are trusting in Jesus Christ alone for your salvation. If you have any doubts about your participation, please speak to the pastor or one of the elders after the service. Wine and bread are the elements of the supper as instituted by Jesus Christ. We recommend the use of wine; however we offer both juice and wine in the tray to allow true liberty of conscience. - 10 -

CELEBRATION OF THE LORD S SUPPER Wine is located in the two outer rings; juice is located in the center ring. (See FCC observance on below) PRAYER FOR THE CONGREGATION *AMAZING GRACE - Hymn #460, vs. 1-3, 6 Amazing grace! How sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found; was blind, but now I see. Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed! Through many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come; tis grace that brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home. When we ve been there ten thousand years, bright shining as the sun, We ve no less days to sing God s praise than when we first begun. *BENEDICTION If you are in need of personal prayer, an elder is available up front after the service. God Commissions Us Having been richly blessed by the Lord in our worship, we are sent forth as his ambassadors of reconciliation into the world. Our worship of God as his people now extends into our lives throughout the week. We are to offer ourselves as living sacrifices to him in all areas of our lives.
