We can imagine their panic and worry as they discovered that Jesus was not with the caravan returning to Nazareth. The Holy Family journeyed with family members and friends because traveling alone was dangerous. When they found Jesus at the Temple, Jesus spoke like a typical adolescent, unsympathetic to his parents' concern. Yet his words teach an important lesson about reducing anxiety in our family life. In essence, Jesus says, If you had remembered who I am, you would have known where to find me. In their panic, Mary and Joseph had forgotten what had been told to them before Jesus' birth, that their son was the Son of God. Knowing a person well helps reduce our anxieties for them because we can better predict how they will behave, and we know their capacity to handle the challenges life might present to them. As you gather as a family, have fun playing the game How well do you know me? Take turns trying to stump one another by asking family members questions about yourself, such as What is my favorite memory of a family vacation? Given a choice, what dinner menu would I pick? If I could travel anywhere in the world, where would I go? One member of the family might prepare and read the questions aloud as each person writes down the answers. Family members then take turns guessing the answers, playing this game as a quiz show. Observe that one thing about families is that we learn to know each other well. 1 10

We can think of Mary, Joseph, and Jesus just peaceful in prayer with no worries, fears, or anxieties. We can be tempted to think that holiness for them was easy and straight-forward. The greatness of the Holy Family is shown though when we take them off the pedestal. Like all of us, their lives were filled with trials, ordinariness, and joys. The key to the Holy Family s holiness was they were centered on the Person Jesus. Through the ups, downs, and ordinariness of life, Mary and Joseph were centered on Jesus. Both Mary and Joseph each probably had different dreams and plans for their lives, but when God called them to their unique vocation they answered. And together their lives were centered on Jesus from the joy of his birth to the flight into Egypt to the ordinariness of home life. Those treasured hidden years where the Holy Family had an ordinary home life where they probably prayed together, learned together, worked together, and played together. And as Jesus grew up his life was centered on His Heavenly Father and His Divine Mission. The Holy Family then I believe shows us a beautiful example of lives centered on the Person of Jesus. This Christmas season is a great time to renew our homes around the Person of Jesus. And there are so many ways to do this: Praying together as a family- whatever it be, meal prayers, rosary, divine mercy chaplet, scripture, or even 3 hail Marys Putting out Religious art a crucifix, pictures of Jesus, Mary, Joseph, or the Saints. Or favorite quotes from Scripture or the Saints Going to Mass and Reconciliation Together as a Family Family Service Projects - around the Home and in the Community Talking about God Talking about God s presence in the joys and sorrows of life Practicing Stewardship For More Ideas visit www.domestic-church.com 9 St. Valentine's @ the Villa - February 10, 2019 5:30 p.m. - Why not celebrate the joy and humor of Christian married love with your sweetheart this St. Valentine s Day?
