The Carillon Newsletter January 2019 Greetings Church! Happy New Year! We have been one combined church of Lutherans and Presbyterians (Luthertarians?) for over a year now. This merger has been one of joy and growth. Our church has experienced some major growth this past year, in our ministries and in our membership. Thanks be to God for that! We are so happy that God is opening us up to be a blessing within Hoquiam. On December 19th, we served at the community meal over 90 people, handed out 30 Christmas baskets (which comes roughly to 120 meals), and gave out and wrapped Salvation Army's Christmas for Kids presents to over 40 Hoquiam families (over 114 children). Thank you to all who helped out to make that night possible for the families and community members. It was a great evening to be church and was truly a time to live out our faith. Thank you to all of you for making all this possible with your gifts, prayers, time, and talents. We are so grateful for each of you. May God bless each of you this new year and may it be one of joy, hope, and love. ~Pastor Michelle Annual Meeting The Annual Meeting is Sunday, February 3 rd after worship, starting at 11:30am. Letter from the Memorial Committee (This proposal was approved by council to be brought to a vote at the annual meeting on February 3, 2019) November 27, 2018 Memorial Funds Committee: Gretchen Klein, Marcia Smith, Sue Varland Proposal for Memorial Funds By-laws revision Submitted to Saron/First Presbyterian Church Council and Congregation for approval Rationale: It has been more than 30 years since the by-laws of the Memorial Funds have been reviewed for changes and updates. The Memorial Funds committee and Pastor de Beauchamp met on November 27 to study the current by-laws, specifically to consider revision to clarify fund use. Below are proposed changes, as well as the current by-laws for Memorial Funds. The committee proposes changes to section 20.02 to allow undesignated funds to be used for special building projects and operation that are outside the normal obligation provided by the annual budget. Changes to 20.04.02 remove the requirement for investment of memorial funds. (None of these funds are currently invested.) This proposal below was accepted by the Church Council and will be put to vote to the congregation at our annual meeting on February 3, 2019, the by-laws will be amended to read: C20.02 b. Undesignated memorials shall be used for any visible, identifiable project or purpose except those which are considered the normal obligation of the congregation to provide within its annual budget. C20.04.02 a.. A minimum balance of not less than $1000.00 shall be maintained. Current by-laws for Memorial Funds with changes marked Chapter 20 MEMORIAL FUNDS C20.01 There shall be a Saron Lutheran Memorial Fund established to honor the memories of members and friends of this congregation. C20.02 Memorials may be of two categories: a. Designated memorials to a specific use or purpose, (i.e. Hymnals, Organ, etc.), such use or purpose to be subject to the approval of the church council as indicated in the by-laws. b. Undesignated memorials, which shall be used for any visible, identifiable project or purpose except those which does not fall into the category of building, service, operation, maintenance and building expansion, which are considered the normal obligation of the congregation to provide within its annual budget. C20.03 General supervision of the Memorial Fund shall be under the Memorial Committee, in consultation with the Congregation Council and Finance Committee. C20.04 Policies for the management of the Memorial Fund shall be described in the by-laws. C20.04.01 Interest earned on specific funds (i.e. undesignated, Organ, etc.) shall remain with that specific fund. C20.04.02 The undesignated memorial fund shall be managed with the following provisions: a. minimum balance of not less than $1000.00 shall be maintained. to be invested so as to receive the highest possible return. b. that all transfers of funds shall be authorized and documented for congregational information. c. that expenditures made from the undesignated memorial fund be made on the recommendation of the memorial committee subject to majority vote of the council. C20.04.03 The Congregational Council shall approve by majority vote the establishment of all designated memorial funds in consultation with the pastors and Memorial committee in order to safeguard the congregation from receiving an inappropriate gift.
