AFF Opportunities con t Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City 7:00 9:00 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6 in Rooms D & E In this brilliant, heartbreaking book, Matthew Desmond takes us into the poorest neighborhoods of Milwaukee to tell the story of eight families on the edge facing eviction. As we see families forced into shelters, squalid apartments, or more dangerous neighborhoods, we bear witness to the human cost of America s vast inequality and to people s determination and intelligence in the face of hardship. Based on years of embedded fieldwork and painstakingly gathered data, this masterful book transforms our understanding of extreme poverty and economic exploitation while providing fresh ideas for solving a devastating, uniquely American problem. Its unforgettable scenes of hope and loss remind us of the centrality of home, without which nothing else is possible. The one-time meeting will be facilitated by parishioner Hugh Campbell on Feb. 6. In preparation, please purchase (only $11.55 new at Amazon) and read the book in time for our discussion. It is a personal rebirth and parish revitalization. There is a renewal weekend for Men (Jan. 26 and 27, 2019), and for Women (Feb. 9 and 10, 2019). For more information contact Scott Steinke at 777-6433, ext. 115. adult confirmation preparation Adult Confirmation Preparation is for baptized Catholic adults still in need of the Sacrament of Confirmation. Primarily it is designed to help non-catholic adults discern whether or not the Lord is calling them to become fully initiated members of the Catholic Church. If they choose to become a Catholic, they will be initiated at the Easter Vigil Mass on April 20, 2019. The process is also for adult Catholics wishing to grow in their own Catholic faith, and to serve as spiritual companions and/or initiation Sponsors for the Candidates. Starting September 20, meetings will be held in the Spirit House from 7:00-9:00 almost every Thursday evening until shortly after Easter. If interested, or if you have questions about it, please call Deacon Jerry Barney at 777-6433, ext. 121. Book Clubs Small groups meet periodically usually in the intimate setting of a parishioner s home. The frequency of meetings is determined by each group. A book is selected from our parish recommended list and read/discussed to enable the participants to share their faith perspectives with each other. Presently we have one book club that meets on Tuesday evenings from 7:30 9:00 p.m. in our church Hospitality Room starting Sept. 18. If you wish to join them or would like to start a new Book Club to meet at a different time, please contact Deacon Jerry Barney at 777-6433, x121, or jbarney@stjohnwc.org RETURNING CATHOLICS MINISTRY Have you, or someone you know, drifted away from his/her Catholic faith?
