The Good, the Bad, and the Flood HAV YOU VR WATCHD A OMON MAD OMTHING FROM CRATCH? PRHAP IT WA TH PPPRmint sticks at the candy shop, or a jeweler carving and polishing a sapphire stone into a beautiful piece of jewelry. Or maybe it was the construction of a skyscraper from the ground up. As amazing as these creations are to behold, witnessing the Creation of the entire Universe would have been infinitely more spectacular. No doubt, our response would have been, as was the angels, to shout for joy (Job 38:7). verything about God s creation of the heavens and the arth and everything in them was good very good (Genesis 1:31). At that time, the world was free from sin. There were no murderers or thieves. It was a place free from lust and lies, and from divorce and physical abuse. There was no fighting, hatred, or jealousy. Before sin entered the world, Adam and ve lived in complete harmony with nature, with themselves, and most importantly with God. RIC LYON Before long, however, Adam and ve ate of the forbidden fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and sinned against God. Then their son Cain did evil (1 John 3:12) and murdered his brother, Abel. Only a few generations later, Cain s descendant Lamech became extremely arrogant and rejected God s design for marriage and took for himself two wives (Genesis 4:19,23-24). By the time of Noah, the world had become so completely corrupt and violent that the Bible indicates the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart were only evil continually. And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart (Genesis 6:5-6). The all-holy and all-just Creator of the world saw that man must be punished for his constantly corrupt and violent ways (Genesis 6:12-13). God revealed to Noah, a just and obedient man, that He was going to destroy the entire world with a great Flood the likes of which the world had never seen, and will never see again. However, prior to punishing the millions (or perhaps billions) of terribly wicked people on the arth at that time, the all-loving, longsuffering Creator and Judge waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared (1 Peter 3:20). Noah, God s preacher of righteousness (2 Peter 2:5), taught the Holy pirit s message to the extremely unrighteous world of his day for (it appears) 120 years leading up to the floodwaters falling upon the arth (Genesis 6:3). Truly, God is longsuffering not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9). But God s longsuffering is not a forever kind of patience. The unrighteous people of Noah s day learned this hard-hitting truth. God delayed His destruction of the wicked world by water for many years, while Noah preached righteousness to them. ventually, however, God s longsuffering came to an end. The Flood began, and every wicked person on arth received his just punishment from a loving God who gave them plenty of time to repent. adly, rather than follow all that God commanded, as Noah did, the wicked world of that time resisted the will of God and suffered a disastrous death. God s longsuffering with sinners eventually ended in the days of Noah. It ended for odom and Gomorrah in the days of Abraham (Genesis 18-19). And, it eventually will end for all the unfaithful when Jesus returns (2 Peter 3:10). God most certainly is longsuffering, but such patience with sinners and wayward Christians will end one day. God will judge the world at the end of time (Acts 17:30-31), and He will take vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power (2 Thessalonians 1:8-9). Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the on of Man is coming (Matthew 25:13). 92 NOah s Obedience RIC LYON HAV YOU VR THOUGHT ABOUT WHAT NOAH MUT HAV GON THROUGH WHN H BUILT TH ARK? H AND HI FAMILY LIVD AMONG people whose every thought was evil all of the time! The people of his day were corrupt before God and the earth was filled with violence (Genesis 6:5,11). Noah was surrounded on all sides by wickedness; people were constantly lying, cheating, stealing, cursing, and treating each other violently. It was in this kind of world that God instructed Noah to build a gigantic ark. Can you imagine what neighbors said to Noah when he and his three sons were constructing this huge vessel? Perhaps they said, Noah, what are you doing? You are crazy! There has never been a big flood on the arth and there never will be. Likely, they tried insulting him in front of his wife by saying, Your husband is a foolish old man! Fathers probably took their sons to see Noah in order to mock him for doing something as silly as building a huge boat on land. And when Noah preached about obeying God and living right (read 2 Peter 2:5), his audience did not listen to the truth, but continued living wickedly until they perished in the Flood. ven though Noah was surrounded by those who constantly disobeyed God, twice the Bible says that he did all that God commanded him (Genesis 6:22; 7:5). God said to build an ark out of gopher wood, and Noah built an ark out of gopher wood. God said to make the ark 300 cubits long, and Noah made it 300 cubits long. God said to construct one door on the side of the ark, and Noah did just that. While surrounded by wickedness on every side, Noah and his family did everything God said to do the way God said to do it. What a great example for us! We need to be like Noah and always do what is right, even when so-called friends make fun of us. Despite being teased for reading our Bibles, attending worship, helping the weak, and talking to people about Jesus, we ought to obey God rather than men (Acts 5:29). We must be committed to doing everything God said to do exactly the way He said to do it. After all, He knows much better than we do the right way to live which is the best way to live (Proverbs 14:12). The Flood of All FLOOD KYL BUTT AND RIC LYON MOT OF U HAV N NW CLIP ON TLVIION PICTURING FLOODD TOWN, WITH BOAT OR HLICOPTR RCUING TRANDD POPL FROM TH TOP OF HOU. OM OF YOU MIGHT HAV VN BN IN A FLOOD AND HAD your basement filled with water or your car buried underwater. As bad as these floods can be, the Flood in Noah s day makes all the other floods look like tiny mud puddles. The Flood of Noah s day was not a local flood that covered a small area of land like a city or a town. It was a huge, global flood that covered the entire world. Genesis 7:19 explains that during the Flood of Noah s day all the high hills under the whole heaven were covered. The most difficult thing for any flood to cover is a high hill. In fact, most floods do not cover high hills; they cover lower areas of land like valleys or plains. If the high hills were covered, then all of the area that was lower than the hills had to be covered as well. As we look closer at this verse, we see that all of the high hills under the whole heaven were covered. Not one single hill on the entire arth was left dry. That would mean that the only dry area on the globe would have been inside Noah s ark. The Flood of Noah s day covered the whole arth. Although some people still suggest that Noah s Flood was a local flood, ask yourself the following questions: Why would Noah need to build an ark if the Flood was not universal? Why not just instruct Noah and his family to move a few hundred miles away? If Noah s Flood was not universal, why did the apostle Peter compare the universal destruction at the end of time to the world that perished, being flooded with water in Noah s day (2 Peter 3:1-13)? Why did God promise, Never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood to destroy the earth (9:11), if many thousands of localized floods have occurred since Noah s day? Why go through the trouble of taking care of animals for a year on the ark if the animals could have just migrated to other areas of the world? We are thankful that God preserved the facts of the worldwide Flood for us in the Bible. By sending the Flood, He showed us that He will not tolerate sin, but He will reward righteous people. Let us all live righteous lives like Noah, so that we can be together someday in heaven. Works of Art Nadine lmshaeuser Monument, CO Dear Digger Doug, Are there really flood legends found all around the world? Dear reader, What a great question! The fact is, today there are over 200 different countries in the world that have flood legends. Countries such as China, Babylon, and Norway have flood legends that tell of a huge flood that killed most of mankind and flooded the world. The stories were not copied from the Bible, and they did not copy one another. Where did these different flood legends originate? Let s think. If every person on the arth was killed during the Flood except Noah s family, then every person living today would be a distant relative of Noah. After the Flood, doesn t it make sense to think that Noah and his children would have passed the story of the Flood on to their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren? It is no wonder that almost every civilization has a flood story, since every civilization is related to Noah and his family. It was not until about 1,000 years after the Flood that Moses wrote God s perfectly accurate, inspired account of the Flood in the book of Genesis. 94 December 2018 Discovery 95 COPYRIGHT, APOLOGTIC PR, INC., 2018, ALL RIGHT RRVD COPYRIGHT, APOLOGTIC PR, INC., 2018, ALL RIGHT RRVD

THINK HOW HAPPY NOAH AND HI family must have been to finally get out in the sunlight! Imagine also the questions that might have entered their minds as they walked out of the ark. They might have wondered if God would bring another flood and destroy man again. After all, there was no guarantee that all of Noah s descendants would obey the Lord. What if men became wicked again? Would another flood come, and another ark have to be built? If these questions were on the minds of Noah s family, they didn t last very long. When they came off the ark, a beautiful rainbow crossed the sky. As they looked at the rainbow, God made them a promise. He promised that never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth (Genesis 9:11). God said that the rainbow was a sign that He would never destroy the arth by a flood. Can you imagine how relieved Noah s family must have felt? They would never have to build another ark! Yet, as Noah s descendants began to fill the arth, they once again became wicked. Because of their wickedness, God made another promise to all mankind. God promised to destroy the arth and the whole Universe, but next time it will be burned up not flooded. In 2 Peter 3:10, God promised that both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. At first, it may be a little scary to think about the Universe burning up, but when Peter told this news to the early Christians he wasn t trying to scare them. In fact, Peter wanted the Christians to look forward to Christ s return. It will be a time of great joy for those who are obeying God, because Christ will take us home to heaven. ince the Universe will someday be destroyed, Peter told the early Christians to live godly, righteous lives so that they would not be afraid. The rainbow reminds us that God will never flood the entire arth. But it also reminds us that the Universe will be burned up someday. If we trust and obey our awesome God, that day will be a wonderful day of rejoicing!
