Notes from Deanery Synod At Holy Trinity, Attleborough 1 st Feb 2016 Heather opened in prayer and welcomed Linda Wainscott The first part of the meeting was a presentation from Linda Wainscott about the forthcoming Diocesan Centenary. Her presentation included the following: DIOCESAN CENTENARY 2018 - Celebrating the past and looking to the future as the future is as (if not more than) important as the past. The planning team include the Dean John Whitcombe (chair), Graeme Pringle, Linda Wainscott and Naomi Nixon. And Linda is not there in the Diocesan Education role although schools will feature in the programme. Background and context of the Diocese 7 th Century - The Diocese of Mercia was divided so that the southern part became Worcester and the Arden part became the See of Coventry & Lichfield 1905 - The Diocese of Birmingham was created 1918 The Diocese of Coventry was created It will be within the Shared Diocesan Common Purpose Worshipping God Making New Disciples Transforming Communities And the Shared Diocesan Strategy 8 EQ s Preparation and Celebration 3 year process 2016 - The year for making space for God, focussing on renewal Cloud and Fire Pilgrimage with our Bishops around the Diocese: Ascension to Pentecost Theological resource written by Rev d Canon Dr Richard Cooke Clergy encouraged to make space to go on retreat What might this deanery focus on? What might the parishes and church schools focus on? 2017 - The year for building for the future, focussing on generous relationships Lent Course Conference for clergy Church School Headteachers encouraged to go on retreat What might this deanery focus on? What might the parishes and church schools focus on?
2018 - The year for celebration, focussing on reconciliation Church Schools Pilgrimage Possible Arts Festival... What might this deanery focus on? What might the parishes and church schools focus on? Linda then asked the questions around the theme of Renewal, Relationships and Reconciliation What is already happening in our deanery, parishes and church schools? What do we aspire to? What might we need to do differently? The floor was opened for questions: QU: What about non-church schools? Ans: resources will be made available within a range of ages and contexts eg, messy church QU: Pentecost has national C of E initiatives how can we dovetail? Ans: more information will be out soon about the pilgrimage for example. QU: Would it be better for Dioceses to merge to make ministry and the church more sustainable? Ans: Linda said that was a discussion and decision to be made elsewhere. Linda also said that it was important to note that the Centenary is a whole Diocesan event and not just focused in Coventry / at the Catedral. Heather prayed for Linda and the team before Linda then left the meeting. Clive then took the floor to talk about what is happening at Holy Trinity, Attleborough. He said that he will be leaving in June as he retires after 20 years at HTA. He recognised that what he was about to say may sound controversial but that had great concerns about Parish Share issues. Due to charity law he was not able to set a negative budget but that didn t seem to be taken into account when the parish share was allocated nor did he feel his concerns were listened to. Due to the change of income in the parish they are unable to give as before. And despite being able to pay the parish share in full for the last 20 years and recently paying much more than the cost of a post dictated they will be in arrears with the Diocese despite covering the cost of the post of a clergy person. It especially didn t seem fair as other parishes are paying less in relation to a similar income. He asked why churches were still being called to cover the costs of churches that are dying / should be closed. The positives however included the fact that the he has been planning for the last 2 years for his retirement and things are being prepared to be handed over and that Morris has met with the PCC to start the process of recruitment.
We then had a break for refreshments. Deanery business included the exchange of information of upcoming events being hosted at the various churches around the deanery and the dates/locations of the next 2 meetings were given: 24 th May Coton and 20 th October Stockingford. Clive concluded the meeting with leading the Synod in a time of worship and closing blessing.
