NIPAWIN BIBLE COLLEGE The Church and Last Things (BT312) Instructors: Lindsay Anderson & Adam Yadlowsky February 5 April 17 2018 Course Description: A study of the Bible s teaching concerning the nature, character and activity of the Church, and the teaching of the Scriptures regarding Eschatology or Last Things. Emphasis is placed on the relevance of the Church and its involvement in preparation for the Last Days. Course Textbooks: Erickson, Millard J. Christian Theology 3 rd Ed. Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Academic. 2013. Grudem, Wayne. Bible Doctrine. Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan. 2000. Blomberg, Craig L. and Chung, Sung Wook. A Case for Historic Premillennialism. Grand Rapids, MI: Backer Academic. 2009. A full size Bible, that has verse cross referencing (a translation rather than a paraphrase). This must be brought to every class. Big Question: What is the significance and relevance of the New Testament teaching on the church and eschatology for believers in the 21 st Century? Learning Outcomes: 1. Map out competently the biblical teachings concerning the nature, character, ministry and mission of the New Testament Church. 2. Commit to engage and serve in the context of the local church. 3. Identify and define the key terms used in the field of Eschatology (Last Things). 4. Critically evaluate the main positions taken with respect to Eschatology and to defend their views on such issues with sound argumentation. Course Outline: I. The Church A. What is the Church? Biblical Definitions: How is the church described? B. The Church, the Kingdom of God and the Gospel C. Biblical Metaphors in the New Testament D. Images of the Church E. The Mission of the Church F. Church Government G. The Offices of the Church H. The Ordinances of the Church Baptism & Communion I. Membership and Discipline in the Church 1

II. Last Things A. Why Eschatology is important B. Prophetic and Apocalyptic literature C. Millennial views D. The Bible and End Times (Revelations not only Revelation) E. The Day of the Lord F. Premillennial Positions G. Hell H. Heaven Course Requirements: All written assignments are to be typed in accordance with the NBC Study Guide for papers. Assignments will be graded on the basis of content, clarity, grammar, and spelling. Assignments will be due no later than 5:00 pm on the day that they are assigned. Ecclesiological Portion 1. Textbook Reading (Value 15%): Read and interact with pages 949-1051 of Erickson and pages 363-423 of Grudem. Your interaction with the writer will include underlining and/or highlighting the text along with written comments in the margins. You may use sticky notes if you prefer not to write in the book. Your written comments need to be legible and written in pen only. Your comments will be evaluated as evidence of your careful reading. Due: March 10 th 2. Ministry Profile (Value 35%) Each student will complete a Ministry Profile (see handout). This document will help you think through your understanding of your own gifts and abilities, your understanding of ministry, and critical theological points. The goal here is a document that you can use in future church and ministry settings. Due: February 27 th Eschatological Portion 1. Textbook Reading (Value -20%) Read both A Case for Historic Premillennialism and Grudem s (Part 7) eschatological section. Highlight and comment on the reading. Communicate your thoughts on what the author is teaching. Be certain to make clear that the points you agree with and what you don t agree with in the different views presented. Communicate not only what stands out to you but also what you think of every perspective presented and give a short point as to why you hold to your perspective in that area. Due: April 9 th 2. Personal Eschatological Time Line (Value 20%) Create a well-supported timeline/chart of your perspective on the End time events. Have the biblical support of all aspects of the timeline/chart clearly presented, and a short description of the personal interpretation of the verses and/or theological perspective used. Determine a way to state 2

your sources clearly (ex. footnotes or endnotes) and bibliographies are still required on the last page of assignment. Due: April 17 th 3. Class participation (Value 10%) NOTEBOOK COMPUTER USE POLICY: Seeing that the notes for this course are given to each student, it is unnecessary to bring notebook computers to class. If you bring a notebook computer to class, you are asked not to use it during class time. Violation of this policy will result in the student being marked absent from class.
