Youth Educational Adventures Going Places Feast of Tabernacles 20 18 2018 Primaries The purpose of this special Feast edition is to help our children understand practical aspects of living a Christian life, not only at the Feast but year-round. We also want to develop in the children a love for learning about God which will bring them again and again to church and to Sabbath School. We hope to encourage daily contact with God through prayer and devotional Bible readings. In the process, we hope to create in each child an expectation of fully participating as a baptized member of God s church. We also pray that the lessons in this book will translate into knowledge and behavior becoming of a child of God. Ronald Dart Publications Editor Allie Dart Managing Editor Mickie Ranaldo Layout & Design CEM and YEA would like to thank Ethan Kerbel for appearing in our cover photo. Less on 1 You are Tabernacling! Tabernecling! Memory Verse For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal (2 Corinthians 4:18b). Scriptures 2 Corinthians 4:18b; Proverbs 14:11; John 11:1-45, 14:2-3 Words to Know TEMPORARY - lasting only a short time ETERNAL - forever, no beginning or end TABERNA CLE - temporary dwelling place ABERNACLE P home. We are tabernacling here for a short time. But God is eternal He has no beginning and no end. He is forever! atsy and Tommy loved the beach! The water was cool. Little waves splashed on the sand. Patsy and Tommy had worked hard building a sand castle. It had tall towers and a wall around it. Tommy ran to get his mom and dad to see their great sand castle. One day Jesus friend, Lazarus, was very sick. His sisters, Mary and Martha, called for Jesus to come quickly. They knew He could help Lazarus. Mom and Dad came back to the beach with Tommy. Patsy was sitting there crying. Their beautiful castle was a mess. What happened? asked Tommy. Patsy said a big wave came and washed away all their hard work. Their sand castle didn t last, it was temporary. But Jesus needed to teach His disciples a lesson. He waited two days before going to Bethany. Mary and Martha were very upset when Jesus got there. Lazarus was dead. They said if Jesus had come sooner, Lazarus would still be alive. This Feast is also temporary. Soon it will be time to go home again. Our life on earth is temporary, too. We are like the sand castle. We don t last forever. Mary and Martha knew Jesus was God s Son. He had power to heal sick people. But, nothing could be done now that Lazarus was dead. So they thought! This world is not our permanent 4 When Jesus was 12 years old, Mary and Joseph took him to Jerusalem. They went every year to celebrate the Passover feast. Everyone was excited. After the feast, the big crowd started for home. Mary and Joseph looked everywhere for Jesus. They couldn t find Him. So they went back to Jerusalem to look for Him. Where do you think Jesus might have been? The Temple seemed like a good place to look. Mary and Joseph found Jesus there. What do you think He was doing? He wasn t with other children. Jesus was with the teachers of the Law. Jesus knew so much, He was teaching the teachers! Jesus was God s Son. He liked being in His Father s house. Do you like going to church and to the Feast? Do you like to learn about God? This is one way you can follow in Jesus footsteps. Do not lie or steal. You should keep the Sabbath Day and holy days. Study your Bible so you can tell your friends about Jesus. If you follow Jesus, He will let you live with Him forever. Jesus was born as a baby, just as you were. He grew up playing and doing some of the same things you do. He had a mother and father as you have. But, there were some things different about Jesus. He never did anything wrong. Do you ever do things that are wrong? Jesus always obeyed His parents. Have you ever disobeyed your parents? Jesus never worked on the Sabbath. He worshiped God, His Father. Jesus was perfect! for Prayer! Dear Father, Thank you for sending your Son, Jesus, to be born as a baby, and grow up as a child like me. It must have been very hard for Him to leave you! Help me to learn to be obedient as He was, and to follow in His footsteps. In Jesus name I pray. Amen. Jesus is our best friend. He made His Father happy. Do you want to follow in Jesus footsteps? You can start by doing what He did obey your mom and dad. 21

Less on 5 Jesus Was a Child, Too! Memory Verse And the Child grew and became strong; He was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him (Luke 2:40 NIV). Scriptures Luke 2:1-40; Matthew 1:18-24, 2:1-16 Words to Know CELEBRA TE - to have a good time CELEBRATE W hat holiday do some people celebrate on December 25th? Do you know why we don t celebrate on that day? We know Jesus was not born in December. Shepherds were watching their sheep near Bethlehem. It is too cold to be out in the fields in December. Jesus was probably born at the time of the Feast of Tabernacles. Jesus? Jesus was not just another baby. He was born to be our King and Savior. This was a very important day! Herod was king when Jesus was born. He wanted to be the most important person in the land. He was jealous of Jesus and wanted to kill Him. He commanded soldiers to kill all boy babies. But, he didn t know God was protecting Jesus. There was a big celebration on the night Jesus was born. There was no Santa Claus and no Christmas tree. First an angel lit up the whole sky. It was brighter than fireworks on the Fourth of July. The shepherds saw the bright sky. Soon the sky was filled with angels. They sang and praised God because Jesus had come. They went to Bethlehem looking for baby Jesus. They found Him in a stable. They bowed down to worship Him. One night an angel came to Joseph in a dream. He said, Take Jesus and Mary and go to Egypt. They would be safe from Herod there. Mary, Joseph, and Jesus left that night. After Herod died, it was safe for Jesus family to return home. Jesus grew up to be a fine young boy. He did many of the things other boys do. He grew strong and was very wise. God s grace was on Him. Why did the sky light up and angels sing? Why did the shepherds worship 20 Jesus cried because His friends were sad. But Jesus had power even over death. He went to the cave where Lazarus was buried. He had been dead for four days. A large stone was in the doorway. Jesus asked men to take the stone away. Mary and Martha were surprised. You just don t open a grave after so long. Jesus was going to show the people a great miracle. Jesus called out, Lazarus, come out! How can a dead man come out of a grave? God s power gave Lazarus back his life! Now the people could see Jesus had God s power. Lazarus walked out of the grave. He would use his body to tabernacle here again. One day Lazarus will get a permanent body. He will live in a permanent home with Jesus and the Father. God has made a way for us to live forever, too. His Son, Jesus Christ, died for our sins. He wants us to accept Jesus as our Savior. He wants us to live a good life, not do bad things. Have you ever spent the night in a tent or hotel? These are not homes, they are temporary places to stay. A tabernacle is a temporary place to stay, too. Our bodies are tabernacles. Jesus tabernacled on earth for over 30 years. One day He will come back to earth again. That will be a happy day. What kind of temporary place are you staying in this week? Are you in a hotel? Are you in a campground with friends? Your home may be very nice, but it is temporary, too. God has something much better for you. His home will last forever! We are like the sand castle. Without God in our lives, we don t last very long. But, when we do what God says, He gives us eternal life. We will be like the Energizer Bunny... we will keep going, and going, and going! for Prayer! Dear Father, Thank you that you have given me a nice home to live in here on earth. I am glad to know that someday I will have a home with you that will last forever. In Jesus name I pray. Amen. Less on 2 Memory Verse Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you (Matthew 5:44 NIV). Scriptures What Would Jesus Do? Matthew 5:43-48; Genesis 37:3-4; 45:1-11 Words to Know MERCIFUL - showing undeserved kindness, forgiveness PHAROAH - king of Egypt FAMINE - shortage of food PERSECUTE - to harm for religious reasons K One day Jesus went to the Temple in Jerusalem. There were 13 boxes used to collect offerings. Jesus sat by the boxes. He watched as people put money in the boxes. Rich men put in lots of money. Some even made a big show of how much they put in. Others put in a little money. Jesus saw a widow lady go to the boxes. Her husband was dead. She was all alone and didn t have much money. She dropped two copper coins in one box. They were worth less than a penny! But, that was everything she had. She trusted God to take care of her needs. So she obeyed Him. erry s eye was sore. His face was bruised. It was hard to talk with his cut lip. His head hurt from his fight with Eric and Nathan. He could still hear them saying, Kerry, we hate you! Jesus said, Do you want to follow me? Then, love your enemies. Jesus said we should pray for people who hurt us. We should always be ready to forgive. Jesus was really pleased with the widow lady. He told His disciples, She has put in more than all the others. The rich men gave out of their riches. But she gave all that she had. Kerry had to spend a few days in bed, but then he started to miss Eric and Nathan. Kerry had started the fight. Now he wondered if they would ever forgive him. They had been his best friends. There were 12 boys in Joseph s family. Wouldn t it be fun to have 12 brothers? You could have your own football team. You could have two basketball teams. But sometimes Joseph and his brothers didn t get along. They fought like any other brothers. Jesus cares more about how you give. The widow lady gave her offering because she loved God. She wasn t worried about what she would eat. She was not selfish. She wanted to do what was right. And God said, It is more blessed to give than to receive. What would Jesus do if someone beat Him? What if they left Him bruised and sore? Do you think Jesus would forgive them? Joseph was his father s favorite son. Joseph s father gave him a special coat to show how much he loved him. This made his brothers jealous. None of them had a special coat. Some of Joseph s brothers hated him. They even wanted to kill him! How would you have felt if you had been in their place? One day Jesus and His disciples sat on a hillside. Other people joined them. Jesus was teaching them. But some people didn t like what Jesus taught. They didn t think you should love everyone. They just wanted to love people who were good to them. They thought you should hate people who were mean to you. Then we should give God a tithe of everything we have. If you get one dollar each week, you should give ten cents back to God. When you give, do it with a glad heart. Give because you love God, not because you have to. God is happy when you give in the right way. God promises to always take care of you. for Prayer! Jesus gave up everything He had to come to earth. He knew we needed Him. Jesus loves us. We can follow His example by giving to Him and to others. God gives us our homes to live in. He gives us good food to eat. But, some people don t have these things. God says we should give to help needy people. Joseph s brothers took care of their father s sheep. Jacob, Joseph s father 8 17 Dear Father, Thank you for loving me and giving me food to eat, clothes to wear, and a nice, warm house to live in. Thank you for allowing me to share a part of what I have with you and with others. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

Less on 4 Giving is Good Memory Verse Remember the words of Jesus. He said, It is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35b NIrV). Scriptures Luke 21:1-4; Malachi 3:9-10; 2 Corinthians 9:6-9 Words to Know TITHE - one tenth of any money you get D nice furniture was ruined. The new toys Billy got for his birthday were all gone. Even their clothes were burned or damaged by smoke. What would Billy s family do? anny heard the fire engines. He ran out to see where they were going. They stopped at the end of his street. Danny smelled the smoke. Someone s house was on fire. Danny ran down the street. He was surprised to see fire trucks in front of his friend Billy s house. That night Danny heard his mom and dad talking. They were collecting things from the neighbors to help Billy s family. Some people gave money. Some gave furniture or clothes. Danny wanted to give something but what? He could share his clothes with Billy. He could share his toys. But, Billy was his friend. Danny wanted to do more. Firemen hooked up long hoses. They broke out windows to get water to the flames. Smoke stung Danny s eyes. People were yelling. Firemen were rushing around. After an hour, the fire was out at last. Danny saw his piggy bank on his dresser. He was saving money for a new bike. Danny thought, I can give the money to help Billy s family. His old bike could last a while longer. It made Danny feel good to help someone in need. Danny saw Billy sitting on the ground. His head was in his hands. Billy was crying. Are you okay? Where is your family? Danny asked. Billy said they were all fine. No one was hurt. But, everything they had was ruined. Billy s house was destroyed. All the 16 sent Joseph to check on his brothers. Jacob didn t know that his sons planned to kill Joseph. They took his beautiful coat. They threw him into a hole and left him to die. But, at the last minute, they changed their minds. Instead, they sold Joseph to be a slave in Egypt. They had thrown him in a pit. And, they had sold him to become a slave. How should Joseph treat his brothers? Should his brothers go to prison? Should they be punished? What would you do if you were Joseph? Joseph didn t punish his brothers. He gave them food to take home to their father. He even gave them gifts. Joseph was doing what Jesus would do. The brothers were eating. They saw men and camels coming. The men were taking spices to Egypt to sell. The brothers sold Joseph to the men to be a slave. But they kept his beautiful coat. They made up a story to tell their father. They said a wild animal had killed Joseph. They even dipped his coat in goat s blood to make it look real. How do you think Joseph s father felt? God wants His people to be different. He wants us to love everyone even people who are mean to us. He wants us to act as Jesus would. That is not always easy to do. But, God will help you. It will feel good not to have hate in your heart. Joseph did what Jesus would do. He forgave his brothers. Kerry, Eric, and Nathan forgave each other, too. Will you be like Jesus? Will you forgive people who hurt you? Joseph grew up as a slave in Egypt. He worked in the house of one of Pharaoh s guards. His boss wife lied about Joseph. She had him thrown in prison. But, God was with Joseph and blessed him. Later, Joseph was put in charge of everything Pharaoh owned. Joseph was the most important man in Egypt except for Pharaoh. for God gave Joseph a chance to forgive his brothers. There was a famine in the land. People didn t have food to eat. But, Joseph had a great deal of food stored in barns in Egypt. Ten of Joseph s brothers went to Egypt to buy food. They didn t know Joseph was in charge. Prayer! Dear Father, Thank you for loving me and forgiving me of my sins. Help me learn to forgive others when they do wrong things to me. I want to do what you would do. In Jesus name I pray. Amen. Joseph s brothers had treated him badly. They had taken his beautiful coat. 9

Less on 3 A Good Example Sometimes they even ate meat that had been offered to idols. Memory Verse... be an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith, and in purity (1 Timothy 4:12b NIV). Scriptures Matthew 7:12, 19:13-15; Daniel 1:1-8, 11, 1721, 2:27-28 Words to Know RESPONSIBILITY - doing what is right BAB YL ON - city where the palace was located BABYL YLON CHALDEANS - people who lived in Babylon I t was a new school year! Susan knew who her new teacher was. She had heard Mrs. Cotter gave lots of homework and had a bad temper. This would be a long, hard year. Susan hoped she could stay out of trouble. On the first day, Mrs. Cotter was in a bad mood. She yelled when the class got noisy. She sent one boy to the office. If you were late for class, she gave extra homework. Yes, this was going to be a long year! Susan knew Jesus said we should love people who were mean to us. It was going to be hard to love Mrs. Cotter. She always seemed to be mad. Susan wanted to tell her what Jesus said, but she was afraid her teacher would be more angry. If Mrs. Cotter knew Jesus, she would be nicer, Susan thought. How could she help Mrs. Cotter? Susan prayed for God s help. Susan got her answer the next week in Sabbath School. The lesson told how some children were brought to Jesus. The disciples got angry and wanted to send the children away. But, Jesus said, Let the little children come to me. Don t keep them away. The Kingdom of heaven belongs to people like them. Jesus said grown-ups could learn from the children. Susan couldn t tell Mrs. Cotter how to act. But, she could be an example. She could show her by being kind. This would not be easy! Did you know God can use children and teenagers to work for him? King Nebuchadnezzar was the king of Babylon. He went to Jerusalem. He robbed the Temple and took some of the golden cups. He also took children from their homes. Nebuchadnezzar took the cups and children back to Babylon. It was hard for Daniel and his friends to leave their families behind. People in Babylon were different. They spoke differently and ate different foods. 12 The king took the smartest boys to his palace. He taught them the ways of the Chaldeans. They learned their language. They studied their religion and customs. But, the Chaldeans didn t worship God. They worshiped idols. so happy he rewarded Daniel. He made Daniel an important man in the kingdom. Soon everybody heard about wise Daniel and his God. Nebuchadnezzar made a new law. He said the people were not to pray to any god except him. But, Daniel knew this wasn t right. He kept praying to the true God. Men saw Daniel praying to God. They told the king, and the king threw Daniel into a den of lions. But guess what? The lions didn t eat Daniel. God was there keeping Daniel safe. Daniel s parents taught him to worship God. He knew God wouldn t want him to worship idols. He knew he shouldn t eat food that was offered to idols. So, Daniel did a brave thing. He asked the servant if he and his friends could just eat vegetables. They knew it was dangerous to go against the king s orders. But, they would rather please God than men. Showing grown-ups how to act is a big responsibility. Jesus can help you do it. Show that you love Him by how you act and what you say. God blessed Daniel and his friends because they obeyed Him. God made them wise and helped them learn. They learned more than all the other children. One night the king had a very strange dream. He asked his wise men to tell him what it meant. He even offered a reward if they could tell him. But, no one could tell him the meaning. So the king ordered the wise men to be killed. for Prayer! Daniel knew God could tell him what the dream meant. He was not afraid. Daniel went to the king and told him about his dream. Nebuchadnezzar was 13 Dear Father, Thank you that even though I am a child, I can still tell others about you. Help me to always try to do what Jesus would do. I want to be an example to others. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
