The work begun by our Baptsm s strengthened or completed by Confrmaton. 2. What s the sgn of Confrmaton whch s lnked so closely to grace? What s the ol called? The ol s called Holy Chrsm. It s a mxture of olve ol and a perfume called balm or balsam; t s blessed by the bshop durng Holy Week. 4. What s the hstory of Anontng wth ol? Old Testament: Used n the consecraton of a kng. It sgnfed that the anonted one was set apart, marked or sealed for God. New Testament: Used to anont the body to strengthen and heal t. The sgnng wth chrsm s an outward sgn of the nteror strengthenng, settng apart and sealng of the Chrstan for God. The acton of the Holy Sprt begns n a specal way to work n the lves of the confrmed. In ancent tmes, especally n the Eastern churches, a lamp was kept burnng before the Holy Chrsm at all tmes to sgnfy ts sacredness. CONFIRMATION SYMBOLS 1. RED: Lturgcal Color Symbolzes the flames of fre seen at the tme of the descent of the Holy Sprt on the dscples n the Upper Room n Jerusalem, as descrbed n the Book of the Acts of the Apostles. 2. DOVE The usual symbol of the Holy Sprt s the dove descendng, always wth the three-rayed numbus (crcle surroundng the head or body sgnfyng holness from the Latn word for cloud), whch ndcates dvnty. In a more general sense, the dove ndcates the power of God at work n men and women. 3. SEVEN DOVES ARRANGED AROUND A CIRCLE Ths arrangement symbolzes the seven gfts of the Holy Sprt as lsted n Isaah 11:2. Wthn the crcle are sometmes found the two captal letters SS, abbrevatons for the Sanctus Sprtus, Latn for the Holy Sprt. 4. TONGUES OF FIRE Symbol of the Holy Sprt at Pentecost (Acts 2:3), may be found n the form of separate flames of the head of each dscple or an overall arrangement of the seven tongues together. God appeared to Moses n the burnng bush (Exodus 3:2) and agan n fre and smoke on Mt. Sna (Exodus 19:18). 5. WIND Ths s an ancent symbol of the presence and power of God n the Old Testament. 6. WORDS Paraclete: Englsh form of the Greek ttle Parakletos (or Counselor), referrng to the Holy Sprt. THE HOLY SPIRIT The Holy Sprt s God, the Thrd Person of the Blessed Trnty, who dwells n us through sanctfyng grace. 1. What are the gfts of the Holy Sprt? Isaah 11:2-4 The gfts of the Holy Sprt are powers gven to us at Baptsm and strengthened at Confrmaton. They help us persevere n our frendshp wth God and gude us n our decsons and conduct so that we become more lke Jesus. The seven gfts of the Holy Sprt are: Wsdom Understandng Counsel/ Rght Judgment Knowledge Forttude/Courage Pety/Reverence Fear of the Lord/Wonder & Awe The gft of the Sprt that enables us to love the thngs of God and to see thngs from hs pont of vew. The gft of the Sprt that gves us strength to do dffcult deeds for the love of Chrst. The gft of the Sprt that enables us to love and worshp God and respect hs people and all that he has created. 2. What are the fruts of the Holy Sprt? The fruts of the Holy Sprt show the effects of God s presence n us.
