Dear Salem Friends, Message from Bishop Brandt As my sabbatical ends and I return to my work as bishop of Eastern North Dakota, my heart is full of gratitude. My time of returning to the parish brought spiritual renewal and joy. It was more special than I even imagined. I have made friends for life. In the future, coming to our lake home will be even more special knowing I will be able to worship and reconnect with you, my brothers and sisters in Christ. Before my sabbatical began, I knew you had a fine pastor in Pastor Trish, but now I have first-hand experience working with the amazing staff of Salem. They ALL serve you faithfully. I was also impressed by the commitment and dedication of you, the members of the congregation. A strong and healthy church is led primarily by the laity. YOU ARE STRONG AND HEALTHY. You are a loving and capable congregation. Your history is rich with challenge, perseverance, vision and courage. Build on that heritage! Kristi and I will follow your progress with much interest and prayer. Thank you for being so receptive to me and my family. Thank you for rolling up your sleeves and committing to the work that needed to be done during this Advent and Christmas season. Thank you for welcoming and loving me and my family in our brief stay with you. We will always pray for you. Paul wrote to the Philippians, "I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you "(1:3-4) That will certainly be the case for us! In Christ, Bishop Terry A. Brandt PASTOR FOR JANUARY Introducing Pastor Dave Smith After twenty years of route sales for Wonder Bread in Rochester, MN I answered the call to ordained ministry. I graduated in 2005 from Luther Seminary in St. Paul. My wife Bonnie retired from teaching and we took our first call to serve two congregations in north central South Dakota. A call in 2010 to Trinity Lutheran of Laporte brought us back to Minnesota where I served until retirement in 2017. We have lived outside of Walker since returning to Minnesota and divide our time between children and grandchildren in Rochester and Roseau.

Respectfully Submitted, Tim Bruhjell, Secretary Salem s new 70-inch TV will have multiple uses The Technology Team has purchased a 70-inch LG smart TV with a rolling stand to be used for multiple purposes. It is currently located in the fellowship hall and can be moved anywhere in the church as it is wireless. This TV can be used by the ministry teams for teleconferencing with members who have gone south, or cannot attend the SLC meeting but can participate via Skype. Since this is a smart TV, videos or movies can be streamed and used by Salem s confirmation class, Sunday school and VBS students, and other groups who need to show streamed videos. Outside groups like 55 Alive, Longville Area Community Foundation, and others can use this TV for their uses, i. e., Power Point presentations. This TV replaces a projector and screen, and it offers a better quality picture. If a church service or other event has an attendance that is too large for the sanctuary, it can be used for overflow in the fellowship hall. Weddings and funerals can use the TV for slide presentations instead of bringing their own video equipment. One use we are going to try and encourage is when a loved one or friend has a birthday, wedding anniversary, or any other special occasion, the TV can be used for pictures or videos during the coffee hour or church lunches. Contact a member of the Technology Team and we will try to make this happen. We will continue to use this TV for other uses as they become available. The Technology Team members are: Ron Stadtherr, Craig & Barb Anderson, Mike & Hope Olson, Nan Ladehoff, Carole Houghton
