2 ADVENT VOICE A MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR For an Easter practice this year, I ve been cleaning up my office a bit - more accurately, going through some of my old files and boxes. I ve found all kinds of interesting things: old retreat notes from the 90 s; souvenirs and maps of travel; pictures that my children drew to decorate a bulletin board. It s an interesting experience going through all this stuff much of it full of nostalgia for a time when our kids were small and still at home, some of it tinged with grief for things lost, some of it a delightful rediscovery of things forgotten. We have an interesting relationship with our past. We want to hold on to the past and we want to get rid of it at the same time. Free from old mistakes. Free from old wounds. Free from the obligations and circumstances that seem sometimes to trap us in lives we didn t intend. But we also want to hold on to the past. This is, after all, who we are. This is our story. This is where we have been, the journey we have followed, the joys and sorrows that make us who we are. Part of me wants to just throw out the boxes unopened if I haven t missed it in almost five years I can live without it. But part of me wants to hold on to it, to let it help me remember. But really what I want to hold on to is the thread of the story, the plot line, how it happened that I got from there to here. This is what we do on Sunday morning. We remember. We remember the story. We remember the plot line of our lives that we are created in the image of God, that we once walked with God through the Garden, that we turned away and hid ourselves, that we lost the garden. But God left that first garden with us. God walked with us on that journey from slavery into freedom and back again into exile. God walked with us through the very depths of life into another garden, where he wept tears and sweat blood, and laid down his life in the supreme act of mercy. This is what we do on Sundays. We remember. We remember the first garden and that second garden and also a third garden where the women found an empty tomb, and the risen Lord called Mary s name. (Christ is risen! Christ is risen indeed, alleluia, alleluia!) This is what we do on Sundays. We remember the plot line of our lives. The first grade pictures of ourselves and our children, the ticket stubs and hand made Valentines, the Christmas cards from forgotten friends this is not the sum of our lives. All this is caught up in that greater drama that is about our creation, our fall, and our redemption. This is what gives meaning and hope to the daily grind. This is what sustains us in times of trial and enriches the times of joy. This is what we sing and preach and pray in that early morning, on the first day of the week. Life is not captured by dusty fragments in forgotten boxes, but by a heavenly Creator who runs down the path to claim each lost son and daughter with an eternal embrace. Glad to be on the journey with you,

Bethany of the Northwest Sunday On Sunday May 27th we welcome Pastor Ron Vereb from Bethany of the NW for Bethany Sunday. Pastor Vereb will preach that Sunday, and will join us for coffee hour where you can ask him more about Bethany. Bethany of the Northwest is one of the local ministries that we support at Advent. Growing from humble beginnings, Bethany has been a household name in Snohomish County since 1931. Today, Bethany is the fourth largest not-for-profit long-term care provider in the State of Washington. In three Everett locations (including one right by Silver Lake), they provide 231 beds for skilled and sub-acute nursing, and 54 apartments for assisted living. With a staff of more than 400, and a dedicated corps of volunteers, people continue to look to Bethany to provide their residents with a life of independence, dignity, and purpose. (Please note, we begin Summer Schedule on May 27th - one Worship service at 9:30) Remember Your Pledge: Did you know you can make your offering online? Making your contribution online is easy with online bill pay through your bank or through our donation page http:// www.adventlutheran.net/#/give-online. Thank you for your faithfulness. 6 ADVENT VOICE Signs of the Times By the Rev. Kirby Unti, Bishop, NWWA Synod From the MAY 2018 edition of The Spirit It was not that long ago that the third highest attendance numbers for a Sunday were on Mother s Day. It was a big deal to honor mom s wishes to have all her kids in church. I often met adult children that I didn t know existed. It may have been awkward for them to go to church, but it was one day when you didn t want to disappoint mom. Coffee Hour was always slim because families were off to a Mother s Day brunch following worship. It was the one day when Mom was not expected to do any work. It was a favorite day for restaurant owners as the cash registers were singing. Father s Day, on the other hand, was one of the least attended Sundays. It often fell on the first day of the fishing season. The treat was for dad to take the kids fishing and then return home to a big meal. Fast forward a decade or two - and everything has changed. Not even Hallmark has been able to sustain the power of these special days. I dare say that Mother s Day has fallen off the Church calendar. These are the kinds of changes in the culture which we don t get to vote on. Multiple factors converge to create new perspectives on what is important and what the culture values. We are but one voice in the conversation. I know several people for whom Mother s Day elicits tremendous pain. People who had difficult relationships with their mother, those who have lost their mom, people facing fertility challenges, those who have lost children, and women for whom the expectation of motherhood by the culture is not their personal choice. My comments are not intended to be a critique of Mother s Day but rather a reminder for us all how the church must learn to adapt to an always changing culture. While having this conversation with a congregation s adult forum group, I met a mother who expressed the heart burn she feels trying to navigate her role as mom in the world. She confessed that she has had to forgo her time on Facebook because it made her feel that her parenting skills were lacking given all the postings about how great other people s families are. She spoke about how much she would value a mothers group of mothers willing to share in the real challenges they face. I could see the light come on as she began to imagine how this could happen in her congregation and how valuable it would be. She was clear that it would need to be an outreach for new mothers by new mothers. She received affirmation from others for raising the idea, and I encouraged her to consider giving it a try. Such a gathering isn t going to turn around attendance on Mother s Day but it could very well be the Day that each one of the participating mothers looked forward to. There are so many ways in which the church can discover new ways of being church with mothers and fathers, with ALL PEOPLE, that serves to strengthen the fabric of the whole community. We need to listen, learn, and try. So, for those who celebrate Mother's Day, happy Mother s Day. For those who celebrating Father's Day, happy Father s Day. And for all children of God, may we discover new ways to be in relationship with God and with one another.
