Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time 1 October 2017 Saint Luke Church, Whitestone, New York From the Pastor-- Recently a young woman came to the rectory carrying a statue of a Saint that had belonged to her grandmother and had for years been in her grandmother's house. She said to the receptionist: St. Rocco has been in my grandmother s basement for as long as she can remember; she has died and so St. Rocco needs a new home! The statue showed its age, bearing the marks of years of devotion. For some reason when told what had happened at the rectory door I decided Saint Rocco s new home should be here at Saint Luke church. And so, after restoration, the statue has a new home in the vestibule of the elevator on the street level. St. Rocco is the patron saint of the sick and suffering so this location seemed appropriate. Who is St. Rocco? Read on: Saint Rocco was born in Montpelier in France in 1295. His parents, John and Liberia, were wealthy and very devout Christians. When he was 20 years old he lost his parents. He sold his property for the benefit of the poor and decided to go on a pilgrimage to Rome. When he reached Piacenza in northern Italy he took care of the victims of the plague, which eventually infected him too! By divine intervention a dog brought him a piece of bread daily. One day the owner of the dog followed his pet and saw the plague-stricken Saint Rocco and nursed him back to health. Once healed, Saint Rocco continued to take care of the plague victims. Later on, he returned home and because of the regional war he was suspected of being a spy. He was put in prison and there he languished and died of hunter and want. Only when his relatives were getting ready to bury him did they notice the birthmark of a cross on his chest. After his death on Aug. 16, 1327, a devotion to Saint Rocco spread to Italy, France, Germany, England, Spain and the Philippines. Let us commend the sick we have promised to pray for to Saint Rocco patron of those suffering illness and disease. The feast of St. Rocco is August 17th. Saint Rocco Pray for Us! God bless Let Us pray for one another. Prayer to Saint Rocco O Great St. Rocco, deliver us, we beseech you, from contagious diseases, and the contagion of sin. Obtain, for us, a purity of heart which will assist us to make good use of health, and to bear sufferings with patience. Teach us to follow your example in the practice of penance and charity, so that we may, one day enjoy the happiness of being with Christ, Our Savior, in Heaven. Amen. Page 1

Sister Theresa also offers individual sessions of Bereavement Counseling if that is preferred to the group meeting or in addition to the meeting. Please call her to arrange an appointment during the upcoming weeks. Let us all remember those grieving the loss of loved ones in our prayers. CONSOLATION MINISTRY: Our Consolation Ministry at St. Luke offers assistance to families who are preparing to bury a loved one by guiding them through the process of planning the Mass of Christian burial that will be celebrated for the deceased, and attending the funeral mass in support of the family. We are fortunate to have a devoted group of Consolation Ministers whose compassion is a great comfort to the families grieving the loss of loved ones. We are in need of additional parishioners to assist in our Consolation Ministry so we ask that anyone interested in more information about this very important ministry or in joining the ministry please call Sister Theresa at (718)746-8531. A meeting for the Consolation Ministers is planned for Monday, Oct. 16th at 1PM in the Pastoral Center. If that day and time is not possible for new members, Sister Theresa will provide orientation and training individually. It is our hope to welcome new ministers to the Consolation Ministry this Fall.
