Dear Parishioners, PASTOR SCORNERJUNE19, 2016 "Once when Jesus was praying in solitude, and the disciples were with him..." The first line of today's Gospel presents a strange image. Jesus was both by himself and with others. He was somehow experiencing the solitude of personal prayer, but was also close enough to his followers to engage in conversation with them. Although we don't know exactly what the details were of this situation, it does suggest for us an example of what we might call spiritual "balance." Here we see Jesus taking time to be alone in prayer, but also taking time to engage in spiritual reflection with the other members of his community. He didn't sacrifice one for the other. He found a way to have both. We are called to do the same. Developing the habit of personal prayer is an essential part of our spiritual lives. Like Jesus, we too need to set aside time and space to pray by ourselves, connecting as individuals with our Father in heaven. Whether it be a few quiet moments in the morning, or time to pray at night, this kind of prayer keeps us connected to God. It enables us to give our own answer the poignant question Jesus poses today, "But who do you say that I am?" Personal prayer alone, however, is not enough to fulfill us spiritually. We are also meant to participate in the larger community of believers, joining together with others in communal prayer and reflection. This, of course, happens every time we attend Mass as we gather together at church and join in the liturgy. For some, "sacrificing" our Sunday mornings week after week may seem like too much to ask. But this is one way we can carry out the challenging command of Christ to take up our cross and follow him. God is with us always! Fr. Feed The Poor For many year here at St Elizabeth we have helped to feed the poor by making sandwiches. Donations come in to purchase the food, someone comes in and cuts the meat, the ladies( known as the sandwich ladies) come for an hour to 90 minutes to make the sandwiches and someone comes and picks them up and brings them to the food pantry. We have others that donate food and that goes along with our delivery. We are in desperate need of sandwich ladies. They come every other week on Tuesdays. Please call the rectory at 908 486 2514 and help this act of stewardship continue, Thanks Although we only experienced one bad storm this year we did not go unpunished. We discovered that the gutters and leaders on the side of the church going over the three alcoves and the confession booths had been damaged. One set came off completely. We put it into our insurance but received very little back. The gutters are copper and the flashing underneath should be copper as well. Apparently years ago it was replaced with aluminum. Over the years aluminum and copper do not mixed and caused more corrosion. The estimate came in at $9,200.00. This will replaced the flashing, the gutter and leaders with copper. while fixing they discovered more damage to the tile roof which will lead to another $4,300.00 If you can find it in your heart to help off set the cost it would be greatly appreciated. To date we have $4,070.00 in donations, thank you for your generosity! A Time to Relax Summertime is a time to relax. Father's Day Prayer God our Father, you govern and protect your people and shepherd them with a father's love. You place a father in a family as a sign of your love, care, and constant protection. May fathers everywhere be faithful to the example shown in the Scriptures: steadfast in love, forgiving transgressions, sustaining the family, caring for those in need. Give your wisdom to fathers that they may encourage and guide their children. Keep them healthy so they may support a family. Guide every father with the Spirit of your love that they may grow in holiness and draw their family ever closer to you. Amen. The We Are Living Stones Campaign will allow each of us to join our gifts with those who made the parishes and programs of this Archdiocese a reality in years past and will ensure that we remain a strong, vibrant and faithful Church in the years to come. We know that our greatest strength is our Catholic faith and the faith of our people. This campaign is centered primarily on the spiritual growth and development of our people s faith. We are relying on your generosity to create a legacy for this generation --a legacy of faith that will pass on to those who will cherish and take it into a new time, gratefully adding their own gifts to what you have so generously given. Thanks to all of you that have committed to a pledge.
