F R O M R E V. B E C K Y.. Dear Peace Family, Ever since I was old enough to understand what it meant to celebrate New Year s Eve, I ve carefully watched the clock every December 31. I can remember sometimes feeling very nostalgic as the clock ticked down, feeling almost bad that the current year had to end. I can also remember years when the clock couldn t tick fast enough, I was so ready for a new year to begin so we could leave the ragged, troubled old year behind. Either way, one year ends, another year begins. And that year begins as a blank slate with lots of room for possibilities in ministry and mission, relationships and community. We start with renewed hope and a 525,600 minutes of possibilities ahead of us. What will we do with this new year, as individual disciples of Jesus and as a church called to labor for the sake of the gospel together? Will we lead and serve with creativity and energy? Will we be daring and bold in sharing the reason for our hope? Will we aim to please God with our plans and actions? My hope for Peace Presbyterian Church in 2019 includes a deeper commitment to worshipping in spirit and truth, a clear understanding of discipleship and how we learn and grow as Jesus followers, renewed energy for sharing God s best news with our friends and neighbors, new opportunities to welcome the community into our building, and continued fellowship featuring food, board games, and our outdoor spaces. As we set out on this new year journey, may God guide and protect us and all whom we love. Grace and Peace, Pastor Becky

THE PEACE FAMILY CONNECTION PAGE 4 Peace Book Club: The first book selection in the Peace Book Club will be A Grace Disguised: How the Soul Grows through Loss by Jerry Sittser Loss came suddenly for Jerry Sittser. In an instant, a tragic car accident claimed three generations of his family: his mother, his wife, and his young daughter. While most of us will not experience such a catastrophic loss in our lifetime, all of us will taste it. And we can, if we choose, know as well the grace that transforms it. A Grace Disguised plumbs the depths of sorrow, whether due to illness, divorce, or the loss of someone we love. The circumstances are not important; what we do with those circumstances is. In coming to the end of ourselves, we can come to the beginning of a new life one marked by spiritual depth, joy, compassion, and a deeper appreciation of simple blessings. We will meet for six weeks to discuss this book. Two group will meet, one group on Wednesdays at 6pm and another group on Thursdays at 10am starting on January 9 and 10, respectively. Meetings will take place in the church parlor. Week #1: (Intro, chapters 1, 2) Week #2: (Chapters 3, 4, 5) Week #3: (Chapters 6, 7, 8) Week #4: (Chapters 9, 10, 11) Week #5: (Chapters 12, 13, 14) Week #6: (Chapter 15, epilogue) Copies of the book are available for a $14 donation at the church, or they are available in e-book format for $9.99 (purchase on your own). If the cost of the book presents a financial hardship, please speak to Pastor Becky.
