TWENTY-FIFTH THE EPIPHANY BAPTISM OF SUNDAY THE LORD IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER JANUARY JANUARY 8, 24, 2017 13, 2019 Dear parishioners, Today is the last day of the liturgical Christmas season, the Baptism of our Lord Jesus Christ. A friend of mine who enjoys playing bluegrass & country music taught me a song called The River of Jordan. Recalling both the manifestation of the Holy Spirit at the Jordan, and the Old Testament story of the healing of the leper Naaman, the singer declares: The river of Jordan is many miles away / that mighty river I may never see / but I ll find me an altar in some old-fashioned church / and that will be the Jordan River for me. The Baptism of Jesus, and our own baptisms, were anointings by the Holy Spirit. These were singular moments. We are only baptized once. But each time we return to the altar, that is, to Christ himself, the Holy Spirit is renewed in us. This renewal is like another baptism, another experience of God s infinite love given personally to us. Today s feast commemorates the beginning of Jesus ministry. In the same way, when we come to the realization of what it means to be baptized into Christ, we are also called to serve in His name. The abundant gifts of the Holy Spirit are given to us to be shared. Imagine, for a moment, that you have come to the Jordan River. See yourself with Jesus and with many others, waiting to receive the water of Baptism. What would it feel like for you to be touched by the Holy Spirit? What do you feel when you hear God say to you, You are my beloved, with you I am well-pleased? What would you like to give to Jesus in return for such a gift as this? How is he calling you to follow him? Thanks to all who participated in last Sunday s celebration of the Migration Mass. We are proud to be a parish where the diversity of God s People is so visible, and happy to welcome our neighbors from all over the St Louis area to join us in this annual event. On behalf of the Immigrant & Refugee Ministry, I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank everyone for your contribution and help to make the Migration Mass a success. It is a huge event and it would not be possible without the assistance of countless people who help prepare ahead of time, work during the event, and clean up afterwards. Thank you for the grace and patience that you extended to me during the event. May God bless you and your family for your hard work and dedication! It has been a pleasure working with you and I look forward to working with you again. Dan Groody of Notre Dame University followed by a discussion and social. This short film is the story of an annual Eucharist celebrated on both sides of the border at the same time a story of our ritual that unites people beyond political constructions which divide them. Amidst a desert of death and a culture of fear, the film testifies to God s universal, undivided and unrestricted love for all people. It speaks of the gift and challenge of Christian faith and the call to feed the world s hunger for peace, justice and reconciliation. More than just another documentary on immigration, this film is a meditation on the Kingdom of God, the globalization of solidarity and a journey of hope. This is not a report on the Capital Campaign, or anything regarding the repairs and renovations of the Church and Singler Hall. The normal expenses of the parish fall into six categories: (1) personnel, (2) supplies, (3) fees & services, (4) cleaning/repair & maintenance, (5) Cabrini, and (6) insurance & support services. As you can see in the above chart, contributions have increased slightly over the previous year. Thank you for your continuing generosity. But the bottom line is this: for July-November 2018 we are $17, 687 in the red. Our parish operation, just like your household, has daily expenses. Our main sources of income are: Sunday offerings; grants; and fundraising events. As you can see, the single greatest source of our income is the offertory. We are called to live with joy and gratitude for the many blessings we have received, and to share those gifts with God and others. Peace, Fr. Paul In your charity please pray for the soul of parishioner EDWARD MEYER. May he be with Our Lord in glory and may his family be consoled. Also pray for all of our parishioners mourning the deaths of their loved ones.
