Turn to Christ and Live 17 th Sunday after Pentecost September 30 & October 1, 2017

Ebenezer Lutheran Church Port Hudson The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod 9100 Highway YY Leslie, Missouri Parsonage 573-459-6432 Church 573-459-6431 Rev. William F. Zastrow, Pastor Mary Sprick, Secretary ebenezerlutheran@hotmail.com ebenezerlutheranchurch.wordpress.com AS WE GATHER: Sometimes it feels as though this time in which we live is the very first time that people directly challenge God. Yet this feeling is inaccurate. We are reminded by Ezekiel that God s people were going around saying, God is not just already at the time of the prophets. Distrust of God has been around even longer, since Adam and Eve questioned the goodness of God. In the Gospel, chief priests and elders question the authority of Jesus. Nothing new. But Jesus doesn t react angrily. Instead, He lets His actions speak louder than words. With very few words, Jesus would go on trial, be wrongly convicted, suffer beatings, be mercilessly crucified, and be raised from the grave. In Christ, we need not fear scoffers. We don t need to respond by being snarky. We don t need to try to silence anyone. We simply trust the authority of Jesus death and resurrection and follow His way of loving our enemies and praying for those who persecute us. Rather than return evil for evil, we turn to the crucified and risen Jesus and live. PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP: Gracious God, You demonstrate Your authority most clearly in Your mercy toward sinners. Guide us by Your Spirit both to recognize and to submit to Your authority, so that, following our Lord Jesus Christ, our lives are marked with humility and looking to the needs of others above our own; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. 2

you to an area-wide Reformation Service at 7:00 PM, Tuesday, October 31. The festive service will include area choirs, with many of our Lutheran school choirs participating. This special service will highlight the Reformation Solas sola gratia, sola fide, sola sriptura. How timely! Surveys show most Americans and many practicing Christians believe the best way to find yourself is by looking within yourself and people can believe whatever they want as long as those beliefs don t affect society. Surveys also show woeful ignorance about Jesus, especially about His divinity and sinlessness (Barna Trends 2017;53,178-179). This Oct. 31 service invites us to celebrate, reaffirm and witness to God s unmerited grace to us through faith in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Luther said, No one will be saved by the faith of righteousness of another, but only by his own Everyone must believe for himself. What we celebrate this 500 th anniversary year is eternally decisive.
