Then heaven was opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God coming down like a dove and lighting on him. Then a voice said from heaven, This is my own dear Son, with whom I am pleased. Matthew 3. 16-17 My dear Children, Brothers and Sisters in Christ. On January 6th we celebrate the baptism of our Lord. This festival is also called the Festival of Epiphany or Festival of Lights. The feast is also called denho, in Syriac means manifestation or the Feast of Light. This great Mystery describes: The Incorporeal become Incarnate, the Word took unto himself the density of flesh, the Unseen is seen, the Untouchable is touched, the Beginning less become begotten and the Son of God becomes the Son of Man. The Church calls the whole Event of Christ s incarnation as a Mystery since it is beyond human comprehension and understanding that the God revealed Himself in flesh and took body out of humanity. The Unseen became seen, the Untouchable became touchable and the Beginning less became begotten. The eternal God manifested to human without changing His essence. The Holy Trinity was manifested to the Church at Jordan, Father in Voice, the supreme source of Creation, Son as human person, and the Holy Spirit descended like a dove symbolizing the Creative Power. Thus, the Uncreated, Self-existent, Eternal, Adorable and of Onesubstance revealed Himself to the Church on this great Feast. I wish you and family a blessed New Year 2019. God s blessings upon you! Numbers 24:15-25 15 He had scarcely finished speaking when Rebekah who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Abraham s brother Nahor came out with a jug on her shoulder. 16The young woman was very beautiful, a virgin, untouched by man. She went down to the spring and filled her jug. As she came up, 17the servant ran toward her and said, Please give me a sip of water from your jug. 18 Drink, sir, she replied, and quickly TODAY S READINGS lowering the jug into her hand, she gave him a drink. 19When she had finished giving him a drink, she said, I will draw water for your camels, too, until they have finished drinking. 20With that, she quickly emptied her jug into the drinking trough and ran back to the well to draw more water, until she had drawn enough for all the camels. 21The man watched her the whole time, silently waiting to learn whether or not the LORD had made his journey successful. 22When the camels had finished drinking, the man took out a gold nose-ring weighing half a shekel, and two gold bracelets weighing ten shekels for her wrists. 23Then he asked her: Whose daughter, are you? Tell me, please. And is there a place in your father s house for us to spend the night? 24She answered: I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor. 25We have plenty of straw and fodder, she added, and also a place to spend the night. Isaiah 11:1-5 1But a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom. 2 The spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him: a spirit of wisdom and of understanding, A spirit of counsel and of strength, a spirit of knowledge and of fear of the LORD, 3and his delight shall be the fear of the LORD. Not by appearance shall he judge, nor by hearsay shall he decide, 4But he shall judge the poor with justice, and decide fairly for the land s afflicted. He shall strike the ruthless with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall slay the wicked. 5Justice shall be the band around his waist, and faithfulness a belt upon his hips. Titus 3:1-7 1 Remind them to be under the control of magistrates and authorities, to be obedient, to be open to every good enterprise. 2They are to slander no one, to be peaceable, considerate, exercising all graciousness toward everyone. 3For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, deluded, slaves to various desires and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful ourselves and hating one another. 4But when the kindness and generous love of God our savior appeared, 5not because of any righteous deeds we had done but because of his mercy, he saved us through the bath of rebirth and renewal by the holy Spirit, 6whom he richly poured out on us through Jesus Christ our savior, 7so that we might be justified by his grace and become heirs in hope of eternal life. Matthew 3:13-17 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. 14 John tried to prevent him, saying, I need to be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me? 15Jesus said to him in reply, Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he allowed him. 16 j After Jesus was baptized, he came up from the water and behold, the heavens were opened [for him], and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove [and] coming upon him. 17And a voice came from the heavens, saying, This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. CCD Corner SAINT OF THE WEEK By Fr. Thomas Kadukappillil How sweet to my tongue is your promise, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Psalm 119.103 ST. KURIAKOSE ELIAS CHAVARA Feast day January 3 (Patron Saint of: Congregations, literature, media, press industry) Saint Kuriakose Elias Chavara was born on 10th Feb. 1805 of God fearing parents Iko (Kuriakose) Chavara and Mariam Thoppil of the Syro-Malabar Church, at Kainakary, near Allappuzha, Kerala. According to the local custom the infant was baptized on the 8th day in Chennankari Parish Church, Alappuzha. From the age 5 to 10, he attended the village school (Kalari) to study languages, different dialects, and elementary sciences under the guidance of a Hindu teacher (Ashan). Inspiration to become a Priest: Inspired by the desire to become a priest, he began the studies under the parish priest of the church of St. Joseph. At the age of 13 in 1818 he entered the seminary at Pallipuram where Malpan (Syriac word meaning teacher, Guru ) Thomas Palackal was the Rector. He was ordained priest on 29th November, 1829 at Arthunkal and celebrated his First Holy Mass at Chennankari Church. After the ordination he was engaged for some time in pastoral ministry; however, he soon returned to the seminary to teach and to officiate for the Malpan Thomas Palackal during his absence. Thus, he joined Malpan Thomas Porukara and Malpan Thomas Palackal when they were planning to find a congregation. Social reformer: Kuriakose Elias Chavara was a social reformer who initiated reforms in the Kerala society much before Narayana Guru (1853) Chattambi Swamikal (1853) and Vakkom Abdul Khadar Maulavi (1854). Though he hailed from a Syriac Christian family, he played a major role in educating and uplifting people especially of the lower ranks of society. In 1830 he went to Mannanam to direct the construction of the first house of the congregation of which the foundation stone was laid on 11th May 1831. After the death of both the Malpans, Saint Kuriakose Elias Chavara took up leadership. On 8th December, 1855 he made the religious profession along with other 10 companions, under the name "Kuriakose Elias of Holy Family". Service to the Church: He was the Prior General of all the monasteries of the congregation from 1856 till his death in 1871. When, in 1861, a schism threatened the Church of Kerala with the arrival of Mar Thomas Rocos without proper credentials from the Pope, Saint Kuriakose Elias Chavara was appointed the Vicar-General of the Syro-Malabar Church by the Arch-Bishop of Verapolly (Varapuzha). He is gratefully remembered and acknowledged by the later leaders of the Church and by the Catholic community in general for his strenuous fight, strong stance, and effective leadership in thwarting `Thomas Rochos' intrusion and saving the church of Kerala from schism. He introduced retreat preaching for the laity for the first time in the Kerala Church. He popularized devotions and piety exercises such as rosary, way of the cross and eucharistic adoration. His death, Miracles and Canonization: In 1871, on January 3rd, Fr. Kuriakose Elias Chavara, with a painful illness, died at Koonammavu monastery in Kochi, preserving his baptismal innocence. Scores of miraculous favors were reported by the intercession of Kuriakose Chavara. Sister Alphonsa, who later became the first saint of India, has testified in 1936 that Kuriakose Elias Chavara had appeared to her twice during her illness and relieved her suffering. St. Alphonsa had a holy relic of Kuriakose Elias' hair which was taken by one of his disciples Varkey Muttathupadathu. It was this relic which served Alphonsa to pray to Kuriakose Chavara and receive miraculous cure. The relic is now preserved and are piously kept in the St. Joseph's Monastery church, Mannanam. He was canonized by Pope Francis on November 23, 2014. Gospel Reflections January 06, 2019 Matthew 3:13-17 Some people share the life of people they are with. Maybe a bit like the parents getting on the floor to play with the child. Baptism of Our Lord - This is my Son, the Beloved; my favor rests on him. Jesus was like that, and his baptism puts him in the ordinary line with people coming to John for the ritual baptism. Giving his heart and sharing our life. He becomes one of us, sharing our humanity. At each mass we say, by the mingling of the water and wine, may we come to share the divinity of Christ, who humbles himself to share in our humanity. In the depths of sharing our humanity in the Jordan waters, he heard the affirmation of his Father, you are my beloved Son. He would live like that, touching closely the lives of his people, especially the sick. He would touch their hearts, and literally their bodies even when they were unclean like people suffering from leprosy. He would do the same today for the people we marginalize and look down on. His baptism is one of the big moments of hope. As we are, he was also, except for our sinning. His resurrection is the final reason for hope: as he is now, we shall be. Let s humbly remember the baptism of Jesus and how God appeared in the clouds and spoke to John the Baptist saying He is my son. ~ Carolyn Anil 4
