ORDER OF WORSHIP Gathering Chime Prelude O Little Town of Bethlehem No. 121 Welcome and Announcements (Please sign the Welcome Book and pass it to your neighbor.) Introit I Wonder as I Wander Terry Allebaugh, harmonica I wonder as I wander out under the sky How Jesus my Saviour did come for to die For poor ordn ry people like you and like I I wonder as I wander out under the sky *Call to Worship (* Please stand as you are able.) One: Angels called to shepherds with songs of good news. All: Mary pondered the mystery of wisdom and goodness in the tumult of new birth. One: Holy splendor shines from a manger where the Light of the world was born to pierce the darkness. All: Praise God from the heights and the from the depths; in the heavens and on the earth and seas, in the halls of learning and in the courts of power and in the places of humility. One: Praise God with the loving of our hearts, with the work and movement of our bodies, and with the thinking of our minds. All: We gather with people in every place who have glimpsed God s salvation and grace to worship and praise: Father, Son and Spirit; Creator, Redeemer and Guide; Source of life, the Light that shines in the darkness, Wisdom of the ages; perfect and eternal, now and forever. 2

*Hymn Angels, from the Realms of Glory No. 143 *Call to Confession *Prayer of Confession Holy God, we have seen the Christ child in the manger, and we know that you are a light to all people. Forgive us when our lives are not shaped by the Christmas story, when our hearts are not open to the leading of your spirit, when our hands are not open to help a neighbor in need. Speak your good news to us once more, forgive us and bring us peace. Silent Confession *Response It Came Upon the Midnight Clear (v.3) No. 123 Yet with the woes of sin and strife the world has suffered long: Beneath the heavenly hymn have rolled two thousand years of wrong; and we at war on earth hear not the tidings that they bring; O, hush the noise and cease the strife to hear the angels sing. *Assurance of Pardon *Response It Came Upon the Midnight Clear (v.4) No. 123 And you, beneath life s crushing load, whose forms are bending low, who toil along the climbing way with painful steps and slow, look now, for glad and golden hours come swiftly on the wing: O, rest beside the weary road, and hear the angels sing. *Sharing the Peace of Christ One: May the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you, All: and also with you. One: Let us share that peace with one another. Prayer for Illumination 3

Scripture Readings and Hymns (Please remain seated during singing.) Luke 2:15-20 NT, p. 58 Hymn Still, Still, Still No. 124 Luke 2:21-35 NT, p. 59 Hymn Song of Simeon No. 545 Luke 2:36-40 NT, p. 59 Hymn Once in Royal David s City (vv. 3 & 4) No. 101 Luke 2:41-52 NT, p. 59 One: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. Homily Wisdom and Years Lori Pistor *Affirmation of Faith From: A Declaration of Faith Jesus was what we are. He grew up in a family and a society troubled by the common problems of the world. His knowledge was limited by his time and place in history. He felt deeply the joy of friendship and the hurt of being rejected. Jesus prayed, struggled with temptation, knew anger, and was subject to suffering and death. He was like us in every way except sin. Jesus was what we should be. He served his Father with complete trust and unwavering obedience. He loved all kinds of people and accepted their love. In constant dependence upon the Holy Spirit, Jesus allowed no temptation or threat to keep him from loving God with his whole being and his neighbor as himself. We recognize in Jesus what God created us to be. He exposes our failure to live as he lived. He demonstrates the new humanity God promises to give us through him. 4

*Hymn Where Shepherds Lately Knelt No. 120 Time with Our Children Offering of Tithes and Gift Offertory Christmas Melange Terry Allebaugh, harmonica *Doxology Christmas Doxology Heard *Prayer of Dedication Gracious God, these are but tokens of what we bring to you. Receive, too, our hope and trust. Bless these offerings. Bless our lives that we may be gracious givers again and again. In Christ we pray, Amen. 5

Prayers of Joy and Concern and the Lord s Prayer p.35 Lord in your goodness: Hear our praise; Lord in your mercy: Hear our prayer. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. *Hymn While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks (vv. 1 & 2) No. 118 Benediction *Hymn While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks (v. 6) No. 118 All glory be to God on high, and to the earth be peace; good will to all from highest heaven begin and never cease, begin and never cease! It Is Not Over by Ann Weems It is not over, this birthing. There are always newer skies into which God can throw stars. When we begin to think that we can predict the Advent of God, that we can box the Christ in a stable in Bethlehem, that s just the time that God will be born in a place we can t imagine and won t believe. Those who wait for God watch with their hearts and not their eyes, listening always listening for angel words.
