Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church The Lantern I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of the life. John 8:12 MAY 2013 Greetings from Pastor... What comes next? The Easter season leads us to Pentecost, when we joyfully celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit. It is also a time when we celebrate confirmation of young people who have completed a short course of study. Too often it is seen as a graduation ceremony, and there is a history of young people disappearing soon after being confirmed. We have to ask, why? What is the cause? Could it be because we are not offering our young people what they need? In an attempt to better meet their needs we will be exploring new ways to engage our high school age youth; what shape it will take I do not know. It may mean linking youth together on twitter or facebook. It may mean helping young people from Immanuel to take part in Youth Ministry events and national gatherings. We have adults who are willing to help, we have a significant number of high school youth, we have God's Holy Spirit to lead us. What comes next is up to those who seek to find new ways to live out their faith experience. If you are one of those young people, you'll find a starting point elsewhere in this month's newsletter. On Sunday, May 5 th immediately following the service, we would like to meet with all students currently in grades 8 through 12 to discuss the beginning of the high school youth group. You will decide what you want and expect from a youth group. You will decide on a name. You will decide how often we meet. You will decorate the youth group bulletin board. If you haven t noticed the operative word in this new youth group is YOU! A successful youth program depends on you. Did we mention there will be pizza at this meeting? We look forward to meeting with you and, most importantly, we look forward to a fun and spirit filled youth group! By the way, do you know what movie I quoted? Candy and Clifford Bellomy ATTENTION ~ YOUTH ATTENTION PARISHENERS On May 19th ~ 8 students will once again be making their confirmation. PENTECOST Ignite your faith Ignite your passion Ignite your life May 19th Pentecost, the fiftieth day after Easter, Is Greek for the Feast of Weeks. This once great festival of the church has diminished in recent times, especially when compared to Christmas and Easter. And yet there was a time when the Day of Pentecost was as big an event as these with its own vigil service. Unfortunately, nothing survives of this ancient liturgy. How might we return Pentecost to its once great splendor as a chief festival of the Church Year? Don t miss out and find out the answer! with Descending Doves & Streaming Fire 3 Flowers & Hand made Decorations

Hymn Devotion for May Come, Holy Ghost, Our Souls Inspire Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire, And lighten with celestial fire; Thou the anointing Spirit art, Who dost Thy sevenfold gifts impart. Thy blessed unction from above Is comfort, life, and fire of love; Enable with perpetual light The dullness of our blinded sight. Anoint and cheer our soiled face With abundance of Thy grace; Keep far our foes; give peace at home; Where Thou art guide, no ill can come. Teach us to know the Father, Son, And Thee, of both, to be but One; That through the ages all along Thy praise may be our endless song: Praise to thine eternal merit, Father Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen. Attributed to Rhabanus Maurus (c. 776-856) Translated by John Cosin (1594-1672) THE HOLY SPIRIT is often associated with fire. John the Baptist spoke of Jesus baptizing people with the Holy Spirit and with fire. Sure enough, when the Holy Spirit came at Pentecost, He appeared as tongues of fire resting on each believer. You can t help but think back to the many Old Testament appearances of the Lord God as a fiery presence in the burning bush, leading Israel through the desert, inhabiting the tabernacle and temple. Was this the Spirit s celestial fire? There are seven gifts of the Spirit mentioned in Romans 12:6-8. This may be behind the sevenfold gifts of this hymn s first stanza. Of course 1 Corinthians 12 offers another dozen or so, and Ephesians adds a few more. So it s more likely that the author used seven as the number of perfection or completeness, as it is often used throughout Scripture. Anointing had two purposes in Scripture. Ritually, it was used as a sign to God s special empowerment for kings, prophets, and priests. But in everyday life it was a way of refreshing and cleansing. The Spirit does all that for us, empowering us to serve God as well as offering spiritual refreshment. Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord. 2 Corinthians 3:17-18, NKJV Reprinted from The One Year Book of Hymns, Tyndale House Publishers, Inc. 9
