REFLECTION ON GOSPEL STUDENTS PROFILE 1. Hong Say Vong : Friends call me Hendrick, originally from Vietnam, came to America when I was 4 and was raised in Reno, Nevada where I went to school. Was an undergraduate from University of Nevada, Reno and attended graduate school at the University of Hawaii. The visit of the Magi occurs directly before the story of the Holy Family s flight into Egypt. Matthew s Gospel tells a version of Jesus birth that is different than the one in Luke. Of the actual birth of Jesus, Matthew tells us little more than, When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod... The story of the census is found only in Luke s Gospel, but we hear about the visit of the Magi only in Matthew s Gospel. We know little about the Magi. They come from the East and journey to Bethlehem, following an astrological sign, so we believe them to be astrologers. We assume that there were three Magi based upon the naming of their three gifts. The Gospel does not say how many Magi paid homage to Jesus. In Matthew s Gospel, they represent the Gentiles search for a savior. Because the Magi represent the entire world, they also represent our search for Jesus. We have come to consider the gifts they bring as a foreshadowing of Jesus role in salvation. We believe the meaning of the gifts to be Christological. Gold is presented as representative of Jesus kingship. Frankincense is a symbol of his divinity because priests burned the substance in the Temple. Myrrh, which was used to prepare the dead for burial, is offered in anticipation of Jesus death. The word Epiphany means manifestation or showing forth. Historically several moments in Christ s early life and ministry have been celebrated as epiphanies, including his birth in Bethlehem, the visit of the Magi, his baptism by John, and his first miracle at Cana. I am in the RCIA program to learn about Catholicism, and have a better understanding of Catholic beliefs and practices. I grew up in a Buddhist family not knowing anything about Catholicism. All I am learning now is new to me and want to understand and learn what it means to be a good Catholic and I hope to be a practicing catholic in the future. As a full-pledge Catholic, I expect myself to live the Catholic faith through actions that speak louder than words. I hope to be confident in what I learn about the religion and be able to live my everyday life by example and be involved in various community events and services that need me, and be a mentor to those who need guidance and encourage others, like me, who are curious about learning the Christian faith. It is important that I complete my sacraments of initiation as these are essential part of the Catholic faith, in my journey as new Christian. Through the grace of God, I hope to live a devout Catholic life and raise my children with a strong religious foundation and nurture their spirituality. 2. Vee Tran = A young woman originally from Vietnam. I am in the RCIA program of OLQW because I have a desire to learn more about the Catholic faith and start my journey with God. I hope that it will help and guide me to the right path towards heaven. As a full pledge Catholic, I would put in use what I am learning from Mr. Asuncion and from my classmates to help further develop our relationships. I will pray, attend mass regularly and on the holy days of obligation and live by the commandments. I am not a perfect person, but with God s grace I will strive to be a good wife, a better daughter to my parents, a sincere friend to my friends, a helpful neighbor and the best mother I can be for my future kids. I am completing the Sacraments of Initiation; Baptism=the sacrament of rebirth, initiation, consecration and empowerment and free us from the Original sin; Holy Eucharist=receiving the body and blood of Christ just as He offered at the Lat Supper to make us closer to Him; Confirmation=the necessary sacrament to complete our Baptismal vows with the help of the Holy Spirit through his gifts, make us true witnesses to Christ and obliges us to spread and defend the faith by word and deed. Receiving these sacraments will deepen our relationship with God, unite us firmly with Christ and with the Holy Spirit, allow us to begin serving God. pg. 3
