F IRST UNITED METHODI ST CHURCH METHODIST MESSENGER V O L U M E 4 5, I S S U E 4 A P R I L 2 0 1 7 I N S I D E T H I S I S S U E : FROM OUR PASTOR Living Last Supper Pastor s Page 1 Preaching Schedule 2 Church Finances 2 Memorials 2 Bulletin Board 3 One of the most popular and sacred paintings in the world is Leonardo da Vinci s, The Last Supper. It is widely known the painting from 1495 depicts the precise moment in which Jesus reveals that one of his friends will betray him. The astonishment and outrage of the disciples is noticeable. Not as well-known are these details (from writer Kristy Puchko)... Holy Week 4 UMW Update 5 April Servants 6 April Calendar 7 Back page 8 The original painting is very big, about 15 feet by 29 feet. The painting cannot be moved. Its permanent home is the dining hall wall of the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy. A doorway was added to the wall in 1652 that holds the painting. This meant that a lower part of the piece, which included Jesus s feet, was lost. The look of every disciple was based on a real-life model. Leonardo searched the jails of Milan for the ideal looking villain to portray Judas. The spilled salt before Judas connects with his betrayal. Some propose the figure to the left of Jesus is not John, but Mary Magdalene. Only 20-25 people are allowed to see the painting at a time, in 15 minute blocks. Visitors should book tickets two months in advance. For the seventh year in a row, members of our church are pleased to bring this historic painting to life. The Living Last Supper production this year has some new faces and some new ideas. Performance dates are March 30 at Women at the Well Prison Congregation, April 7 at Lexington Estate, April 9 at St. Timothys UMC in Cedar Falls, and April 14 at the Independence Jr./Sr. High School. Spread the word about the dates! Come and join us during this meaningful time of year! Blessings! Scott
