TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME THE HIGHEST LAW Various laws that are still on the books may seem silly to us in our day and age. In one California city, it is illegal to have two indoor bathtubs in one house. Clean water, a precious commodity when the law was written, is now readily available, so the law seems silly. But the human value of protecting and preserving precious resources is still around, evident in many conservation laws that seem sensible to us. So it is with the laws of religious tradition. What Jesus scorns today is others attitude toward ritual laws, an attitude that becomes nearly idolatrous when laws are observed for their own sake. Jesus teaches that observation of external ritual laws is of value only when they are emblems of our internal disposition toward the will of God. Roman Catholicism is a tradition rich with customs, traditions, and even laws. As we continue to listen to the voice of Christ, we must always look into our own hearts and underneath our ritual practices to make sure that love of God and love of neighbor are what we prize above all. Our whole lives must follow the one ultimate law of God: to love God completely and to love neighbor entirely. TODAY S READINGS First Reading For what great nation is there that has gods so close to it as the Lord, our God, is to us? (Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-8). Psalm The one who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord (Psalm 15). Second Reading Religion that is pure is this: to care for orphans and widows in their affliction (James 1:17-18, 21b-22, 27). Gospel This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me (Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23). HOW TO BE LIKE SAINT MOTHER TERESA OF CALCUTTA FEAST DAY SEPTEMBER 5 th During her lifetime, Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta was consistently one of the most admired humans walking our Earth. That has continued since her death in 1997. St. Teresa Feast Day is September 5 th. Let s all strive to be a little more like this beloved Saint. Here are 5 ways to live a full and fulfilling life like Mother Teresa. 1. Be an advocate for those without a voice. Mother Teresa s message was simple: The poor must know that we love them. She touched lepers and took care of those with AIDS. She encouraged others to really see the poorest of the poor by going out and meeting them. She cared for those in need with her selfless actions. 2. Be determined, but don t be afraid to ask for help. Mother Teresa started the Missionaries of Charity in 1950 after winning Vatican recognition of her new order. She had no income and sometimes had to beg for food and supplies. But, she was determined to serve those who were abandoned by society. She set such an example that, at the time of her death, more than 4,000 of her Sisters ran orphanages, AIDS hospices, and charity centers worldwide. Don t be discouraged when things seem bleak. If you feel called to help others, dedicate yourself to answering with action. Sometimes you can t do it yourself, so ask others to join you. There are many ways you can get involved. Dedicate yourself to a cause important to you and unite with people who share your same energy. 3. Pray. Mother Teresa was a woman of God. Sometimes she struggled with the suffering she saw. She asked God questions, but most importantly, she prayed. She prayed for understanding, she prayed for help, she prayed for strength. By praying, Mother Teresa was able to continue to do what she loved, working with the poor. 4. Live humbly. Later in her life, Mother Teresa was constantly on the world stage. She was the recipient of the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize, but she didn t let fame go to her head. In fact, when she was told she had won, she said, I feel unworthy. Mother Teresa lived a simple life, and saw herself as God s vessel. She worked with the most vulnerable, easing suffering and spreading peace. As Catholics, we are inspired by our saints. We celebrate them for their miracles, and for their lives of sacrifice and goodness. We are also inspired by the daily, extraordinary events we see happen around the world. With every gift to the needy, whether offered in time, money or prayer, we honor the example of the saints. 5. Smile. Finally, you don t need more resources to be more like Mother Teresa. You can do it for free just smile! Many of Mother Teresa s most famous quotes involve our simplest gifts: love, peace, or a smile. She had this advice: Smile at each other, make time for each other, enjoy each other. St. Teresa of Calcutta, you gave your life to radiating the love of Jesus to the abandoned, pray for us! QUOTES BY BLESSED TERESA OF CALCUTTA Wednesday, September 5 th is the Feast Day for Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta. She is remembered as a holy example of humility, compassion, and care for the most vulnerable. Her secret was prayer, one we can make our own, and realize the joy, peace and love we can both experience and share as she did. Following are some of Mother Teresa s more memorable quotes. You are God s love in action. Through you, God is still loving the world. Each time people come into contact with us, they must become different and better people because of having met us. We must radiate God s love. Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier. There is a terrible hunger for love. We all experience that in our lives the pain, the loneliness. We must have the courage to recognize it. The poor you may have right in your own family. Find them. Love them. The fruit of silence is prayer. The fruit of prayer is faith. The fruit of faith is love. The fruit of love is service. The fruit of service is peace. I used to believe that prayer changes things, but now I believe that prayer changes us and we change things. For me, the religion I live and use to worship God is the Catholic religion. For me, this is my very life, my joy, and the greatest gift of God in His love for me. He could have given me no greater gift. Before you speak, it is necessary for you to listen, for God speaks in the silence of the heart. Give yourself fully to God. He will use you to accomplish great things on the condition that you believe much more in His love than in your own weakness. Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing. Not all of us can do great things but we can all do small things with great love.
