LowCountry Emmaus And their eyes were opened, and they knew him. Luke 24:31 Volume 16 Number 3 March 2007 FROM THE LAY DIRECTOR To the Community, I would like to thank Indian Fields UMC for hosting this months gathering and Karen Ayers for her 4th day testimony about music and how it moves her in doing God's will. I think about how we all are called in some form of ministry and though we may think it is trivial God uses us in that way. As we approach spring we need to be electing our new board members so I ask you to prayerfully look at those names of people who are willing to serve the Emmaus community in that capacity and VOTE because we are given this right to have a say in matters. Those who have offered their service to this community all are stepping forward to the call to do God's will. Keep in mind these people are going to be obligating their time for this community to help the purpose of Emmaus in the strengthening of our Christian environment. We are in preparation for the fall walks but we are in need of PILGRIMS to have the walks and please remember that in sponsoring what your responsibility is to them.first we need to pray about those who may be needing an Emmaus experience. Second we need to talk with them and see if this is something they would be interested in. Do not be afraid to tell them things about the weekend if they feel they need to know, because there is nothing secretive about the weekends. Third you can offer them an application and let them know you will be sponsoring them (or someone else if you are already committed),but know that someone is going to follow through with their getting to and from the walks. The Emmaus model is to always try and get husband and wife to go on the same set of walks but there are exceptions. When you feel one spouse wants to go but for some reason the other can't at this time please explain the situation to the registrar so the board can make a sound decision. Usually a letter from their Pastor assuring this won't cause problems in the family and remembering that Emmaus is to strengthen the family. Fourth you must remember this is only the beginning of the sponsorship because you need to look out for their family while their on the walk so if an emergency occurs you can notify the other spouse and help with any needs while one is on the walk. After you have made sure they are attending you must get letters for the pilgrims from family members and love ones. Some other important things you need to remember is being at send-off,candlelight,closing,4th day follow-up, and helping them get into a reunion group. There are other things we as sponsors should do for the pilgrim and the love of JESUS will show us what that is. I mentioned at the gathering the Emmaus celebration will be in the fall of this year and it will be in Columbia, S. C. Details have not been sent out on time an location but more information will be provided when received. DECOLORES, DAN HARE Need an application? You can download one on the web at http://www.umcsc.net/communities/lowcountryemmaus/application.pdf Don t forget to check the important dates on the back page.

Page 2 LowCountry Emmaus FROM THE SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR And God said, Let there be light. (Genesis 1:3) For those who celebrate the 40 days of Lent it is meant for a time of renewal and enlightenment. What thoughts does this word Lent evoke in your mind? What anticipation? What urgency? What reality? One clue of enlightenment for the word is found in the old Anglo-Saxon word Lencten, which is defined as Springtime. For those who observe Lent it is a time for renewal and cleansing. Like the earth long burdened by the cold and death of winter something within us cries for the warming light of Spring. As the Psalmist let our prayer be Create in me a clean heart O God; and renew a right spirit within me. (Psalm 51:10) Let us take the light that is Jesus the Christ and turn that light upon our inner being. Search every depth, test every action, and measure every goal. What anticipation? What urgency? Then in patience, faith, and perseverance let that light, like the sweet spring rain, seep into the roots of our soul. And God said, Let there be light. (Genesis 1:3) De Colores Robert.SPECIAL GATHERING INFORMATION Special May Gathering The May Gathering will have a different format: a Saturday picnic. Please plan to join us on Saturday afternoon, May 12, at Camp Summers and Manget in Cameron, from 1:30 until 5:00. Music and entertainment will be provided by the Kerygma Praise Band. (You'll recognize the musicians, even if you never knew them by this name.) Dennis Folden and family will provide grill services. Families should bring whatever they want cooked on the grill, other picnic food, water, tea, and sodas. You'll also want to bring lawn chairs, Frisbees, balls, and the like, and maybe a canopy for shade. De Colores, David Lupo THIS MONTHS GATHERING The Gathering this month will be held at Hibben UMC in Mount Pleasant on March 16 th, since the Spring Walks have been postponed.
