Jesus has overcome the world and offers us hope and life even in the face of deep, painful grief. Welcome! We believe that God is calling Easter to be a holy place for the broken and to a deep life of prayer and worship. These two go together during April and May as we learn more about emotional health and as we work to overcome the stigma associated with mental health. We will learn from stories in the Bible and acknowledge that sometimes mental health and life circumstances can leave us feeling overcome. However, we are not left undone because the promises of our resurrected Christ remind us that God helps us live with or even overcome brokenness and despair with help from God and God s people. Jesus said, I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world (John 16:33). Parents, you can find canvas activity bags for your children in the back of the sanctuary. For infants up through age three, the nursery is available. Thank you for joining us today. We welcome you! You are also invited to take an Announcements sheet here at Easter, or visit easter.org for events & activities (Announcement sheets are posted weekly under Events & News). Grief May 13, 2018 8:30 & 10 a.m. Easter Lutheran Church to grow in faith and carry on the work of Jesus Christ Prelude: Jesu, Joy of Man s Desiring - J.S. Bach Ben Kornelis, piano Greetings and Announcements Gathering Confession and Forgiveness Pastor: Together, with one voice, let us admit that we are easily broken. And so we pray: God of life, we are broken by selfishness, complacency, and anxiety. We are broken by trauma, neglect, and regret. Congregation: We are overcome. P: We struggle with the powers we have to break one another. And we struggle with the powers we have to break ourselves. C: We are overcome. As Jesus did, we welcome children of all ages as integral members of the body of Christ, and we welcome the sounds and activity that accompany them! Thank you Parents/Grandparents for bringing your children to worship! P: We are overcome, O God, and we ask for your forgiveness and peace. C: Forgive us our brokenness and quiet our troubled souls, O God. Send us your peace that is deeper than our understanding. P: God, who is the source of all peace, has overcome the world. Though we are easily broken, God makes us whole and alive again. In the name of Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. Be overcome by God s peace and healing love. C: Amen.

The Sharing of the Peace is a way of demonstrating hospitality and grace with others. Please understand if some people choose not to shake hands while sharing the Peace for health reasons, but simply greet you with a smile. God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song Lesson: Job 1:1-5, 1: 13-22, 2:11-13 (NRSV) Word Narrator: Job: Narrator one: Messenger: Narrator: Messenger two: Narrator: Messenger three: Narrator: Messenger four: Narrator: Job: There was once a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job. That man was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil. There were born to him seven sons and three daughters. He had seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred donkeys, and very many servants; so that this man was the greatest of all the people of the east. His sons used to go and hold feasts in one another s houses in turn; and they would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. And when the feast days had run their course, Job would send and sanctify them, and he would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said, It may be that my children have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. This is what Job always did. One day when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in the eldest brother s house, a messenger came to Job and said, The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were feeding beside them, and the Sabeans fell on them and carried them off, and killed the servants with the edge of the sword; I alone have escaped to tell you. While he was still speaking, another came and said, The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them; I alone have escaped to tell you. While he was still speaking, another came and said, The Chaldeans formed three columns, made a raid on the camels and carried them off, and killed the servants with the edge of the sword; I alone have escaped to tell you. While he was still speaking, another came and said, Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother s house, and suddenly a great wind came across the desert, struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young people, and they are dead; I alone have escaped to tell you. Then Job arose, tore his robe, shaved his head, and fell on the ground and worshiped. He said, Naked I came from my mother s womb, and naked shall I return there; the Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord. 6 Narrator: In all this Job did not sin or charge God with wrong-doing. Now when Job s three friends heard of all these troubles that had come upon him, each of them set out from his home Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. They met together to go and console and comfort him. When they saw him from a distance, they did not recognize him, and they raised their voices and wept aloud; they tore their robes and threw dust in the air upon their heads. They sat with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his suffering was very great.

Gospel Acclamation: Gospel: Luke 23: 44-49 (NRSV) It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, while the sun s light failed; and the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Then Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, Father, into your hands I commend my spirit. Having said this, he breathed his last. When the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God and said, Certainly this man was innocent. And when all the crowds who had gathered there for this spectacle saw what had taken place, they returned home, beating their breasts. But all his acquaintances, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things. L: The gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. Sermon: Pastor Steve Thomason Hymn of the Day: How Long, O God Hymnal #698 7

Father is a specific and accessible image of God that Jesus gave us. Jesus did not limit God to this image. References to God as Creator, Parent, Mother, Counselor can be equally as helpful and valid. Another translation of catholic church is church universal Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Baptism (10:00) Paige Margaret Wollan, daughter of Thomas & Jennifer Wollan. Her sponsors are Timothy & Jessica Knutson. Adrienne Dawn Kujawa, daughter of Mark & Amanda Kujawa. Her sponsors are Isaac & Carolyn Shafer and Curtis & Samantha Batulis. P: Let us speak together words of welcome to our new daughters in Christ. C: We welcome you into the body of Christ and into the mission we share: to grow in faith and carry on the work of Jesus Christ! The offering is an act of worship. Please come to one of the stations, as directed. Gluten-free wafers are at the back of the sanctuary near the sound booth. 9

P: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, for the glorious resurrection of our Savior Jesus Christ, the true Pascal Lamb, who gave himself to take away our sin, who in dying has destroyed death, and in rising has brought us to eternal life. And so, with Mary Magdeline and Peter, and all the witnesses of the resurrection, with earth and sea and all their creatures, and with angels and archangels, cherubim and seraphim, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Words of Institution Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. Distribution Lamb of God 10
