Sacramental Preparation Baptism: All Baptisms are celebrated on the first Sunday of the month at 9:45 AM. The preparation process should begin at least three months before the planned date of the Baptism. A Baptism Preparation Class is required for parents (godparents may attend if they wish). This class is offered on the fourth Sunday of each month at 9:45 AM. Please call the parish office to register. The date of the baptism is scheduled after attending the class. Parish membership and active worship is required for two months prior to preparation. Haven t Received Your Sacrament on Schedule? Families of children in grades three and up who have been baptized but have not yet received any formal religious education, as well as those who have not been baptized, should contact the Parish Office for information on how to proceed. Initiation of Adults and Older Children: This is an extended formation process for unbaptized or uncatechized adults or baptized Christians of other faith traditions who wish to become members of the Catholic Church, as well as for unbaptized or uncatechized school-aged children. Please contact the parish office for more information. Initiation is celebrated at the Easter Vigil after a formation period of one or two years. Adult Confirmation: This is a program for persons over the age of 18 who have received the Sacraments of Baptism and First Eucharist, but who never completed their initiation with the Sacrament of Confirmation. The program is a 10-12 week program, with Confirmation being celebrated on the Solemnity of Pentecost. Please call the parish office for more details. Matrimony: Couples wishing to marry in Good Shepherd Parish are required to make initial arrangements at least one year in advance. Four sessions with the priest or deacon, as well as Pre-Cana or Engaged Encounter take place during this year. Parish registration and active worship for at least two months are required before a date may be scheduled. Anointing of the Sick: Anyone who is seriously ill or unable to come to church for a length of time should contact the parish office to arrange for the Anointing of the Sick. Eucharistic Ministers bring Holy Communion to homebound parishioners every Sunday, and one of the priests will visit on the First Friday of each month. Please call the parish office to make arrangements. The Diocese of Metuchen provides Catholic priests to serve at all local hospitals. Holy Orders: If you are interested in learning more about the priesthood or religious life, contact the Vocations Office of the Diocese of Metuchen at 732-562-1990, ext. 1700 or by email at vocations@diometuchen.org or visit www.diometuchen.org/vocations. Parish Registration: We welcome you to the Good Shepherd Parish Community! Please register at the Parish Office as soon as you are able to do so, and the staff will be more than happy to inform you about our parish and the opportunities we offer. Parish registration is required for religious education, celebration of all Sacraments and certification as a sponsor for Baptism and Confirmation. Regular Sunday worship with us indicates a practicing Catholic, not just parish registration. An assurance of family practice and raising children in the faith they seek is necessary for the sacraments of initiation and certification of sponsorship. Please notify the parish office of any changes in phone number, address, e-mail address or when leaving the parish. 2 GOOD SHEPHERD PARISH FINANCIAL CORNER Collection Report 10/22/17 Weekly World Mission Sunday Purgatorial Mass Society If you would like to enroll a loved one for 2017, please call Maria at the Parish Office. A Letter FROM OUR PASTOR: As short as last weekend s letter was, this week s WILL be a lot longer as November approaches, things really start to get busy. So here goes: A HUGE Word of Thanks! Last Sunday s Tricky Tray was a huge success! We had close to 270 people attending, with some fantastic prizes. The planning and shopping for the Tricky Tray starts nearly a year beforehand, and is on-going. I would especially like to thank all of the Committee for their hard work getting ready throughout the past year, to all those who worked setting up, organizing, wrapping gifts, working the kitchen and acting as prize runners. And I especially would like to thank all of you who generously donated prizes or solicited donations from local businesses. The one comment I hear over and over about our Tricky Tray is the quality of prizes. That s only true because YOU make it happen! So thank you once again! Congratulations! This weekend Bishop Checchio is honoring teens from around the Diocese of Metuchen with the presentation of the St. Timothy Award at a special ceremony at St. Francis Cathedral. This award is presented to high school juniors and seniors who have shown exemplary dedication and service to their parish communities. This year, the two recipients from Good Shepherd Parish are Abigail Gulyas and Emmanuel DeJesus. Both Abigail and Emmanuel have been dedicated Altar Servers my entire time here. Both have been very involved in our parish Music Ministry and Abigail has also been very dedicated in both our Religious Education program and with Vacation Bible School in the summer. Emmanuel is now the third member of his family to receive this award! Both Abigail and Emmanuel exemplify strong Catholic faith and dedicated service to our parish. Congratulations to both! All Saints Day and All Souls Day: This Wednesday, November 1 st is All Saints Day, a Holy Day of Obligation. Masses will be offered at 8:00 AM and 7:00 PM. Thursday, November 2 nd is All Souls Day, the day we remember all of our faithful departed. Please make sure your All Souls intentions envelopes are returned to the office by this Tuesday so we can have them ready to place on the Altar for Mass (please don t leave envelopes on the altar!). There will also be two Masses on Thursday, at 8:00 AM and the Solemn Requiem at 7:00 PM. At both Masses during the Intercessions the names of all parishioners who died this past year will be read. We have sent invitations to all their family members to attend, and we usually get a pretty nice attendance, especially at the evening Mass. Something Old, Yet Something New: Every Fall, the Holy Name Society sponsors a Pasta Dinner. Last year, due to the amount of work that this dinner entails and the fact that many of the Holy Name members found it difficult to continue holding this dinner, the Holy Name decided to give this event up. With that in mind, I approached the Youth Group and asked if they would consider sponsoring this event and they said Yes! So the annual Pasta Dinner is being re-christened the Italian Sunday Dinner and we will be holding it on Sunday, November 12 th from 12:00 Noon until 2:30 PM. Since so many people like to hang out after the 11:00 Mass, we thought hey, why not have the dinner then everyone s just going to go home, or go out to eat? So we re going to give this a try. I hope many of you will join us. Please see the flyer in the Bulletin for more details. Save the Dates On Sunday, December 17 th, the Third Sunday of Advent, we will hold Keepsake Christmas. This engaging, one hour family program includes a dramatic reading of the Christmas Story, the opportunity to create a Keepsake Nativity scene, take photos and enjoy a light breakfast. This event will be held at 9:45 AM, so you can attend it after going to 8:30 AM Mass or before the 11:00 AM Mass. On Friday, January 19, 2018, Colleen Kelly Rayner will be back at our parish by popular demand to give a follow up Women s Retreat. Her Confirmation retreats for our students have been well received by students and parents alike, and her Women s Retreat evening last January got a wide cross section of women of all ages. Then, on Thursday, March 15 th, Colleen will be back again to give us a Family Lenten Evening of Recollection. Again, save the dates and check the bulletin for more details in the weeks ahead. With Thanksgiving Coming Up and with colder weather soon to be upon us, our parish Food Pantry goes through a lot very quickly. We can especially use dried pastas, sauce soups and canned stews during the Fall and winter months. Don t forget - next weekend is our monthly Food Pantry Sunday. Mass attendance on October 21/22 was 573 Have a great week ahead, Fr. Mike 3 For the month of October pray for those who need the support of this community of faith: Marie Acciani, Carlos Bendrell, Noah Dahlberg, Pat Dunn, Rose Celecki, Andrea Costantino, Chuck F., Tommy Fitzpatrick, Mike Gaffney, Carol George, Richard Hajzer, Tommy Jones, Arleen Kopin, Carol Magyar, Fr. Please keep in mind that we pray for all the sick every day in the general intercessions of the Mass.

Liturgical Etiquette: External gestures for reverence can become a witness to the truths of our faith. For this reason, we wish to remind our guests and parishioners from me to me of habits or prac- ces that are not appropriate. External gestures of reverence can become a witness to the truths of our faith. The bow immediately before receiving Holy Communion should be done with the conscious recogni- on that it is the Lord himself before whom we bow. He is truly present in the Eucharist in both the host and the cup. The extension of the hands must acknowledge our acceptance of a gi ; not a grabbing for something owed to us. The hands are completely empty, extended in the gesture of acceptance. The Lord should not be just another item among keys or other personal items.
