Speaker: James Tripp James: Hi there! My name is James Tripp, welcome to this video. This is the first of three videos where I m going to be sharing with you some of the principles and concepts to underpin the Create Instant Change system. Now if you don t know already, Create Instant Change is a system for psychoactively or hypnotically facilitating profound, significant and ongoing changes in your fellow human beings. It s a system that s evolved through my own personal work, my own personal clinical practice doing change work over about the last six or seven years to encompass elements from overt hypnosis, covert conversational hypnosis, aspects from the fields of formal psychology, formal influence, this kind of thing. It s bringing together a whole bunch of stuff in such a way that solves some of the problems that I have found to be inherent with classical approaches to hypnosis. I m going to share with you a case study very shortly, which is going to illustrate to you some of the key ideas behind the Create Instant Change approach. Before I do, I d like to share with you two key principles. These are two ideas which quite differentiate the Create Instant Change approach from other approaches to hypnosis and hypnotic change whether you may have encountered. The first of these is the idea of micro change work. Let me explain to you what micro change work is, what micro change work means. A lot of the time when people go for hypnotherapy, they go for a big solution to a big problem and the hypnotherapist goes right ahead, goes balls out so to speak, to install this massive change and implement this massive change onto the system that is the client and the client s life, that kind of psycho social system. Now I found through my own experience and through the stories that people have brought to me that this as an approach often has only a short term impact, and then because the ecology of the system that s being affected hasn t been taken into consideration, then the change doesn t really kind of permeate in. So what we re looking to do with Create Instant Change is work with the system and I m not talking about just doing some kind of NLP style ecology check, I m talking actively working with the system that you are going to transform to create an ecological change by first introducing a very small, but significant change, and then working with that system to leverage it out, to grow it out. 3

It creates a ripple effect, like a pebble hitting a pond and it ripples out through the system. This is what we re aiming to do, go for small, easy to get, but significant changes which that gives us our toe hold in the system, then we leverage it out, transforming the system. This is the first key idea I want to share with you. The second key idea is also related to this idea that human beings are systems, so we want to work with this. But when we re looking at the psychological system, we re looking to work with the whole system. This is very different from most approaches to hypnotic change, which have this idea of a conscious and unconscious mind and that we want to work with the unconscious mind because the unconscious mind is wonderful, so we re going to banish the conscious mind out of the way. What this is failing to recognize, is if you look at somebody s system of mind in totality, consciousness is a key faculty of that. We do not have consciousness by accident. We do not have consciousness for no reason. Consciousness plays a key role in our mental life, in our overall life in the world. It s very important. With the Create Instant Change approach, we are working hypnotically, we are facilitating things hypnotically and we are factoring consciousness into the equation. We are drawing consciousness in and we are utilizing it. So if you imagine consciousness is like a torch beam, when somebody comes to you with a problem or somebody s talking about a problem, how that torch beam is being directed is part of the problem, part of the hypnotically induced problem reality that they re already living the world through. Part of what we re doing is we re taking hold of that torch, we are influencing it and directing it in useful ways to connect up new feedback loops. These new feedback loops generate new feed forward loops which help to re pattern that person s behavior, cognitive patterns, emotional responses as they move forward into the future. Now, I m aware that that s probably all sounding a bit abstract at the moment, so the best thing for me to do is share this story with you, share this case study with you, where I will highlight how those elements are brought to bare. I m going to say something quickly before I do about this particular case study. What I m going to share with you here is not a technique out of the box. It is a Create Instant Change approach. 4

With Create Instant Change, where you learn this, you re going to be learning how to develop skills and understandings, which enable you to be highly creative in how you implement hypnotically facilitated change with the people you work with. So what I m about to share with you is not an out ofthe box process, but it is something that emerges from our understanding, the skills and the principles that are a part of the Create Instant Change system. The second thing I d like to say is, watch out for the language, the hypnotic language. I m not going to unpack it as I go through this case study, but pay attention to it. If you re used to hypnotic language, you ve probably been exposed to it via the NLP language patterns, the Ericksonian Language Patterns route. The way I m using hypnotic language here in this particular case is quite different. There are some overlaps, but it s quite different. The case is one of a chap who came to see me because he had what he described as an overwhelming crush on a woman. It s a woman that he met, he didn t really know, he d met her on his commute to work and seen her at the station. He d seen her several times, sort of fallen head over heals in love with her, love at first sight kind of thing, and he had attempted to chat her up; unfortunately for him, unsuccessfully, and it really put her off, kind of frightened her off. By the time I saw him, he hadn t seen her for a couple of months, because she d either changed her route to work or was going into work at a different time so they wouldn t end up at the station at the same time. And yet, even though he hadn t seen her for two months, he was still being overwhelmed by these feelings and every time he was on his way to the station, he would yearn to see her and he would think about her all day. In the end, it became too much and he came to see me to have it hypnotically removed, so to speak. By the time he first arrives at my office, we ve already spoken on the phone, I already have a sense of what the guy s like and I know he s not likely to be a classically good hypnotic subject, but that s not really important because with the Create Instant Change approach, you can work with any cognitive style. There s no need for anybody to be a particular type of person, like a somnambulist or an excellent hypnotic subject, you can work with any cognitive style, including people who would traditionally be considered difficult clients. 5

So I sat him down, we ve done the rapport building, a little bit of a chat, I ve got him a cup of tea and I want to being the session properly. My first job is to fire up the hypnotic reality, so to speak, that he is already running that is causing him a problem. In the Create Instant Change system I call this eliciting a kinesthetic hook because they want to do it in an embodied way or be into the feel of the thing for them to be really firing it up. I do this in this instance with him by a quick hypnotic pace followed by a very simple question. So I say to him, So, you have a crush, and he says, Yes, I do. I say, Tell me about her. Now here s an interesting thing. At this point, when I said to him, Tell me about her, he did something like this, he went, [large sigh and relaxed] She has the most amazing smile. Now that was a simple question but it directed his consciousness, it directed his attention into the hypnotic loop of the crush, the crush trance, if you like, and fired the whole thing up. This guy did it and did it vividly, his whole physiology reflected him going into this state of experience, the one that we want to change, remember, the one we re going to introduce a small change into. He s there, She has the most amazing smile. I know my mission is to change something inside of that reality he s just entered, to change something small but change something significant, introduce a small change. I start to take him a little bit deeper in with my language and then before going for the ill and orienting to that piece of change. I say to him, And she has the most amazing smile, and you know that smile, don t you? He says, Yeah. And if you are seeing that smile now, you know that s that like to see that smile, don t you? Yeah. So he s there, I m orientating him into seeing it. At this point I say, And as you see that smile and as you notice that smile, just notice her teeth. Now this is the first small change I m introducing because I know he s in the experience in totality, in the experience as a whole and the experience, the hypnotic loop of that experience is built out of a gestalt of all the elements coming together. So I want to pull one element out and isolate it because I know that s going to instantly mess with the pattern. Here s the interesting thing: I say, Just notice her teeth, and this is what happened, he was there in his pleasant, blissed out state, and he went, [changed expression from happy to unhappy] and instantly the smile went from his face, there was a change in his physiology, a sort of crumpledness coming into the brow; we d introduced the first change. 6

So I say, What is it that you notice about her teeth? At this point, I got given a gift, it was a piece of gold, I wasn t expecting this, he said, he s there, he says, Well, they are not quite white. Now that s a gift, they re not quite white. So I say to him at this point, Ahhh, so they re not quite white. What color are they then? Are they yellow? Are they green? Are they brown? He said, No, no, they re just not quite white. I said, Look, they re either white or they re another color, so what color is it when they re not white? He thought for a bit and went, Oh, I suppose they re a little bit yellow. I said, Okay, a little bit yellow and yellow teeth and notice those yellow teeth. So I m introducing the yellowness, amplifying it, starting to leverage the change that we ve got now a little bit, amplifying it, and focusing his attention back in. Notice those yellow teeth and as you notice those teeth, those yellow teeth, is there anything else about those teeth? He says, Well...they re not quite straight. They re not quite straight, he says. So I say, Ah, so they re crooked teeth, they re crooked yellow teeth. At this point he jumps up, he reacts this is an interesting response. He jumps up and reacts and says, This isn t right, this isn t fair. I said, Well, what s not fair? He said, Well, you re attacking her and she s not here to defend herself. I said, Ah, now that s interesting. Not so much that she s not here to defend herself, but that you are defending her right now. You re defending your idea of her and yet you came here claiming that you wanted to change, that you wanted to change your experience. So I ve utilized it and thrown it back at him and put him in a bind. He either defends his idea, defends his current hypnotic reality or he goes with the process of breaking it down. He agrees to go with the process and he goes back in. I focus him back in and I say, Those yellow, crooked teeth, and just notice those teeth. As you notice those teeth and notice that yellow and that crooked, what happens to amazing? Now before, the smile was inherently amazing, but now we ve broken up the loop, we ve broken up the pattern, his experience has shifted and I m asking what happens to amazing? I m shining his torch of consciousness onto the change, amazing has gone. He s confused, he can t get amazing back. I said, So where that s gone now, that amazing? Where s it gone? He can t get it back. This is the beginning of leveraging out the change. These are the principles I wanted to share with you, how we re shining this torch of consciousness, we re having him psychoactively engaged in what is essentially a hypnotic reality of his own creating. 7

Then we are using our language and communication to direct his attention and seed certain ideas, lead his cognition in a certain way that breaks up the old loop, draws his torch of consciousness, draws his attention back into the difference. When we draw this in, it completes a new loop, a difference loop. It s like it completes the circuit which then enables new patterns to start emerging and being written into his future. What I call this is a feedback loop leading into a feedforward loop. Now we re going to look at how we manage the feed forward loop and enhance the feedback loop even more in video number three of this series. We re going to look into how we do that, how we facilitate that because we don t want to leave that to chance. Next video we re going to look at, I mentioned this isn t a system that s about out ofthe box techniques, it s about skills and understandings. Yet there are out ofthe box tools that we can utilize within the context of it. On the next video I m going to share with you a very powerful out ofthe box tool, which is ridiculously simple to apply and yet profoundly powerful. Most people underestimate it until they start using it. I ve said before and I stand by this, that using this one technique alone, you could build up a successful coaching practice around just this technique. It s that good and it s that powerful. It s called the head, heart and gut technique, I m going to share it with you in the next video. In the video I m going to be sharing with you not only how to do it, I will be demonstrating it for you so you can see it absolutely clearly and I will be explaining the how it works and the why it works because I think it s really important to understand why this thing works. It isn t just some random piece of juju, it has a research based kind of underpinning to it as well. That s a head, heart and gut technique, I m going to share that with you in the next video, along with a demo. Until then, I hope you ve enjoyed this video. I hope you re starting to get already an idea, a sense of how the Create Instant Change system works. Until the next video, until I see you next, take care and have a wonderful time. ### 8
