Digging up Facts from the Book of Acts Episode #5 Lesson Outline Theme: God has a Design for your life. LEARN IT No matter what happens, we can trust that God has a design for our lives. Review: Acts 9:1-18 LINK IT Some people think that God doesn't have a design for their lives so they do whatever they want. But the Bible doesn't say that, instead it tells us that God has a design for our lives and He wants us to live for Him. How can we know that God has a design for our lives? DISCUSS with the group that God doesn t make mistakes and none of us are here by accident. Talk about how God has been thinking about us before He ever created the universe. ASK: If you know that God doesn t make mistakes and you aren t here by accident, how does that make you feel? How did God work out the bad things Saul did to His glory? Look up Romans 8:28. ASK: What are some things in your life that were difficult, but God turned them into good? BRAINSTORM some ways to find out God s design for our lives. How has God used the difficult things that have happened to you to help others? SHARE a personal story that shows how God used a difficult thing in your life to help others. And that even though you didn t know how God would help you at the time, He did. Share how you can look back on that difficult time and now you know how God was trying to help you grow. DIG IT Lesson #5 DESIGN: God has a design for your life The purpose of this lesson plan is to: Create a fun and interactive learning experience Provide teaching options in addition to the Leader Q Card Creatively revisit the Bible story featured in the teaching video Give kids an opportunity to further explore the application point PROGRAM Activity Length of Segment Running Time Q Card: Discussion 15 minutes Start-15 minutes Picture: Bible Story 5 minutes 15-20 minutes Play: Learning Activity 10 minutes 20-30 minutes Plan: Group Commitment 5 minutes 30-35 minutes Pray: Prayer Cards 5 minutes 35-45 minutes PREP You will need: One white paper/cardstock square for each kid (approx. 4 X4 ) Pencils, markers, art material Clear Tape Story Props (optional) Prayer Cards (1 per kid) MAP books (1 per kid) PICTURE (The Bible Story) In this portion of your class time you have the opportunity to retell the Bible story presented earlier in the teaching video. The object is to paint a picture that kids will understand and remember. When telling the story, remember you are painting a picture for your viewers. Have fun and explore your creativity. Here are some ideas to make your storytelling more memorable: Try asking kids to play the characters: Saul, Jesus, Saul s friends, Ananias Use Props: flashlight Saul Becomes a Christian (Paraphrased from Acts 9:1-18) Saul wanted to destroy all the Christians. Saul wanted the synagogues to help him put all the Christians in prison. Saul decided to go to Damascus to start arresting all the Christians. When he was about to get to Damascus, a bright light from heaven

suddenly beamed down on him. Saul fell to the ground. Then he heard a voice saying, Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me? Saul asked the voice, Who are you Sir? And then he heard the voice say, I am Jesus, the one you are persecuting! Now get up and go into the city. There you will be told what to do. Then Saul got up from the ground and realized that he was now blind. He could not see anything. Saul s friends lead him to Damascus. He stayed blind for three days. There was a Christian in Damascus named Ananias. God spoke to him and told him to go to the house of Judas and ask for Saul of Tarsus, but Ananias was worried because he had heard about all the terrible things Saul had been doing to the Christians. But God still said, Go and do what I say. For Saul is the person I have chosen to take the good news of my Son Jesus to the Gentiles, to the Kings, and to the people of Israel. So Ananias went to find Saul. He laid his hands on Saul s eyes and then things like scales fell from his eyes. Saul could see again. Saul got up and was baptized in the name of Jesus. PLAY (Learning Activity) In this portion of your class time you will lead your class in a fun and exciting activity that will help your kids apply the Bible lesson to their everyday lives. Quilt Design HOW TO START: Give one square piece of paper to each kid Hand out markers/pencils/art material HOW TO PLAY: Say, We are going to work together to make a special quilt. This quilt will help remind us that God has a design for our lives. Ask the kids to think of one thing they know that God wants them to do. Have all the kids write or draw this thing on ONE SIDE ONLY of their squares. Then ask the kids to create colorful artwork on the other side of their squares. Ask the kids to read their One thing God wants me to do out loud. After all the squares are read, have them tape their squares TOGETHER (TO EACH OTHER). Make sure the squares are taped together so that the things God wants me to do are all on the SAME SIDE. When you are done, the squares should make one big quilt. When all the squares are taped together, turn them over to reveal a colorful quilt. 2

Say to the kids, God has a design for your lives. He has planned to make your lives into a beautiful picture just like you made this beautiful quilt today. When we follow him and do the things he has asked us to do, he will lead us and take care of us and help us to do great things in our lives! Say today s memory verse together as you look at your new quilt. PLAN (Group Commitment) In this portion of your class time you have the opportunity to lead your group to make a commitment. You may select any ONE of the options provided or your group may create its own. Encourage the kids to write their commitments on their Prayer Cards so you can be praying for them during the week. Commitment Options: Design your own quilt at home. Write things God wants you to do on one side of the quilt squares. Hang it up at home. Think about some things you would like to do in your life. Pray and ask God to direct your life and help you make good decisions everyday. Make a list of all the things you are good at doing. Pray and ask God to help you use these abilities to serve Him. PRAYER In this portion of your class time, have your kids fill out the Prayer Card. Take the cards home and pray for your kids throughout the week. End your time together by praying for your group commitment. Hand out prayer cards Ask Kids to fill in their commitments in the space provided Ask kids to fill in their prayer requests in the space provided Collect cards so you can take them home and pray for your kids Close in prayer God, thank you for making a wonderful design for our lives. We know you have a great plan for each of us. Help us to follow you everyday. Please help us to use the gifts and abilities you have given us to serve you now and for the rest of our lives as we grow older. Help us to remember to do the things you have given us to do this week.. In Jesus name, Amen. Remember to Hand out the MAP Books Encourage kids to complete at home with an adult and bring back next week! 3
