Renew, Restore, Rejoice: Growing into an Engaged Church III A ll of us have a role in building up God s kingdom. God has called us to build His kingdom here on earth. He has given us gifts of time, talent and treasure to help us in that work. As baptized persons, we make up the Church. The Church is not a building, but it comes from a Greek word Ecclesia, which means those called out or people of God. So, if we make up the Church when we say that the Church has the responsibility to spread the Gospel, to worship God, to educate children, to care for the poor and needy we are saying that we have a responsibility to spread the Gospel, to worship God, to educate our children, and to care for the poor and the needy. This is how we build up God s kingdom. Our Catholic ancestors had little, but they were happy. Today we have more, but are we happier than they were? They gave back generously to God. The evidence of their generosity is seen all over our country. One hundred years ago, they built that Cathedral Church in Baker City and others elsewhere in the country. How many of us think we can build a Church of that kind today? Did they have more money then? Probably not. Today, we need to follow their example of good and generous stewardship. What are the qualities of a good steward? Good stewards are: Grateful They are thankful to God for everything. Good stewards know that all that they have comes from God. Responsible Good stewards are responsible. They recognize the gifts they have and use them responsibly. Generous Good stewards are generous. They share what they have. Return with Increase Good stewards return their gifts to God with increase. It is our responsibility to show our gratitude to God for these gifts by giving back to Him the first fruits. We know the story of Cane and Abel. Cane was a farmer and Abel was a shepherd. Cane brought to God the fruits of his work the useless remains of his harvest. God rejected it. But Abel brought to God the first born of his sheep. He killed it and offered the best portion as a sacrifice to God. God was pleased with that. The gifts we give to God should also be our best talent, our best effort and our best possession. It means giving generously of our time, talent and treasure. We give to God by sharing with our Church and with those in need. It is our responsibility to show our gratitude to God for all his gifts, by giving back to Him the first fruits and not what is left over at the end of the month. Next weekend is the First Fruits weekend. Remember to return your filled out commitment card. Thanks for your commitment to the Church. Father Jose

St. Francis Women Parishioners are enthusiastically discussing how Endow; Catholic Education on the Nature and Dignity of Women, has touched their hearts, renewed their faith, and deepened their understanding of Catholic Doctrine. Two 8 to 10-week courses will be available this winter at St. Francis Parish starting in February 2017. These study groups are open to all Catholic Women throughout the Central Deanery: Bend, Redmond, Sisters, Sunriver, Prineville, LaPine, Madras, Warm Springs, Gilchrist, and Christmas Valley. The introductory study, Letter to Women, will be offered on Thursday afternoons from 1 to 3 p.m., beginning February 23rd in Seminar Room #2. This class is the first in the Endow Series and sets the stage for all the outstanding additional classes offered. This class is based on St. Pope John Paul II s letter (of the same name) delivered at the Fourth United Nations Conference on Women in 1995. In this pastoral letter, Pope John Paul II reaffirmed his belief regarding the special place women hold in the family, the Church, and throughout the world. On the Christian Meaning of Human Suffering, based on the papal document Salvifici Doloris, helps women find consolation and purpose in life when things go wrong. This evening course will begin on Monday, February 6th, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., in Seminar Room #2. Study groups meet weekly over an 8 to 10-week period. No homework is required! To register, go to https://store.endowonline.org/categories.aspx, or contact Kristine McLean at dkmclean@bendcable.com. There is a very reasonable course fee assessed at registration.

Each of you must bring a gift in proportion to the way the Lord God has blessed you. (Deuteronomy 16:17) Renew Built on the themes of Renew, Restore, Rejoice, the 2017 Stewardship Drive is focused on providing the resources that St. Francis of Assisi Parish needs to fulfill its mission of being a community that lives the Gospel of Jesus Christ through prayer, love and service. In order to accomplish this, we need to renew ourselves as individuals by being intentional disciples of the Lord and by living lives of Christian stewardship. As a parish, our goal is to renew our vitality as a living community of disciples. Through this personal and communal renewal, we want to improve our: sense of belonging ability to respond to the growing Bend and parish communities outreach to newcomers Our gifts to the 2017 Stewardship Drive flow from our relationship with Christ and living lives of stewardship. They will also help the parish be the visible image of Christ and his Church in Bend. This week you will receive your commitment envelope in the mail. Ask the Lord how he wants you and your family to respond. Complete the envelope and bring it back next weekend, First Fruits Sunday, and put it in the offertory basket. If you will be attending Mass outside the area, you can also mail the envelope. Online Giving Now Available We encourage you to use Online Giving to make one-time or recurring gifts.
