Chris Who are you? What are you? How are you? Each of these questions is attempting to discover something of the identity of the one being queried. They are questions designed to help the one asking be better equipped to recognize and even perhaps empathize with the person that is being asked the questions. These are common questions to us all --- we are continually being asked to evaluate and identify ourselves. We have various forms of 'ID' to help accomplish this. Many are simply a series of numbers --- driver's license, social security number, phone number, address, height, weight, etc. --- ALL of these identity markers are numbers, used to help identify who we are. But that is obviously not the only thing by which we are identified.
In our age of hand-held devices, the picture has perhaps become the most powerful display of 'identity' at our disposal --- and we are increasingly becoming OBSESSED with this form of identity recognition. Then there are the countless designations we give ourselves to further clarify who and what we are: To what religion if any do we belong? What country do we come from? What political persuasions do we embrace? What kind of jobs do we work? Where do we live? What kinds of cars do we drive and clothes do we wear? The questions we use to build our sense of identity can be endless. But what is identity anyway, and whay are we so obsessed with it? This week we will be considering the baptism of Jesus, and I believe that we can discover in this event, not only the 'identity' of Jesus, but also our own, and the most central means by which we ought to seek and secure our own sense of 'identity'. I am looking forward to our time of worship this Sunday...see you then! This Week in the Liturgical Year (Year A, Revised Common Lectionary, First Sunday after the Epiphany) Isaiah 43:1-7 Acts 8:14-17 Luke 3:15-17, 21-22 Psalm 29 Collect of the Week Father in heaven, who at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit: Grant that all who are baptized into his Name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confess him as Lord and Savior; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. Children's Church Passage of the Week "Holy Baptism"

Birthdays Anniversaries Kathy Lewis, Dumei Orji & Jana Skala, January 8 Aysia McKinney & Nathan Hamilton, January 11 David Holsclaw, January 25 Lee Martin & J.J. Orji, January 27 None this month SONG OF THE MONTH Our hymn of the month for January is: "BEFORE THE THRONE OF GOD ABOVE" Here are the song's lyrics. And here are a few words on the song from Fr. Chris: "One of the primary themes of Epiphany is light---light has come into the world and the darkness could not overcome it! One of these places of 'darkness' is found in the human heart that seeks to be right with God. There is a kind of darkness that plagues old and young, rich and poor, married or single---it touches those in all stations of life- --it is the darkness of doubt. It is the darkness that was first cast by the tempter in the garden, "Did God really say...?" This doubt can run rampant and cause great distress and unease, especially when the doubt is connected to one's own sense of assurance of God's love and care for them. This month's song is a lyrical assault on all such doubts! It is a song that seeks to draw our attention to our Advocate, the One who pleads our case and seeks our freedom and salvation. It is a song of assurance- -assurance of the accomplished work of Jesus and his ongoing intercession for us with the Father---we have NOT been left alone--jesus prays for us! I pray that we will be strengthened and encouraged by this beautiful reminder of the mystery and wonder of our salvation. Peace." DECEMBER 2018 FINANCIAL SUMMARY FUND BALANCES
